The results of the examination were excellent
I conducted a video consultation with Professor K. Rangger. I can say that: 1) I can evaluate the work of the professor as very good. 2) There was one misunderstanding when interacting with Nordwest. I was sure that the employees of the clinic are obliged to give me the opinion of the professor in writing in Russian and German. But then it turned out that they do not have such a duty. Nevertheless, they gave me these documents. Of course, I believe that this characterizes them well. 3) In the course of my communication with managers of Nordwest, there were still some undesirable moments. They sometimes spoke disrespectfully to me. I believe that this is unacceptable, especially in such a good clinic and for the money that they need to pay. In general, I want to say that my general impression about the clinic is good.

FAQ about Gastroenterology in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How is safety ensured in German gastroenterology clinics?

German gastroenterology clinics maintain superior safety through rigorous national and international certifications. Facilities commonly hold ISO 9001 quality management standards and TÜV Rheinland certifications. Specialized centers often possess German Society for Gastroenterology (DGVS) accreditation. These protocols ensure high hygiene and advanced endoscopic safety.

  • DGVS certification: Confirms specialized expertise as a certified Endoskopie-Zentrum for gastrointestinal procedures.
  • ISO 9001: Validates standardized quality management and patient safety protocols across hospital departments.
  • TÜV certification: Signals compliance with strict German technical and safety inspections for medical equipment.
  • German Cancer Society: Accredits oncology-focused gastroenterology departments like the Medical Center in Solingen.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High patient volume often correlates with accreditation depth in Germany. Medical Center in Solingen treats 60,000+ patients yearly. Such volume allows clinics to maintain specialized certifications from the German Cancer Society. This ensures that routine screenings and complex oncological surgeries meet the same elite safety benchmarks.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the structured approach in German clinics provides a deep sense of security. They emphasize that the competence of the staff and the organized diagnostic programs make them feel they are in the right place for serious treatment.

What qualifications do German gastroenterologists have for minimally-invasive procedures?

German gastroenterologists specializing in minimally-invasive procedures must hold board certification as a Specialist in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology (Facharzt für Innere Medizin und Gastroenterologie). This requires 5-6 years of postgraduate residency training. It includes rigorous, high-volume practice in advanced techniques like ERCP and interventional endosonography.

  • Specialized training: Doctors complete approximately 6 years of residency after finishing medical school.
  • Expert certifications: Specialists like Dr. Siegbert Rossol hold Master of Science degrees in Health Management.
  • Procedure volume: Lead experts often perform 9,000+ surgeries or interventions during their clinical careers.
  • Academic roles: Many top practitioners are professors at institutions like the University of Cologne.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German medical law requires clinics to maintain extremely high procedure volumes to keep their certifications. For example, Medical Center in Solingen serves 60,000 patients annually. This high frequency means even rare gastrointestinal conditions are treated by specialists who see these cases weekly. You should prioritize doctors with over 20 years of experience, such as Dr. Ulrich-Frank Pape, to ensure they have handled the full spectrum of endoscopic complications.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the technology and technical skills of German specialists are exceptional, it is vital to confirm board certifications through the local medical chamber (Ärztekammer) for peace of mind. Many appreciate the transparent consultations where doctors explain every step of the endoscopic therapy with professional security.

What are the success rates and long-term results of bariatric endoscopy?

Patients typically achieve 50% to 70% excess weight loss within 1 to 2 years after bariatric endoscopy. Long-term success rates for maintaining over 50% loss range from 40% to 60% after 5 years. These minimally invasive procedures require strict dietary adherence to prevent weight regain.

  • Weight reduction: ESG typically shows 55% to 65% excess weight loss at 12 months.
  • Long-term maintenance: Long-term success for ESG remains higher than POSE due to pouch dilation.
  • Clinical expertise: Dr. Viktor Alexander Krol leads a certified German Obesity Treatment Center.
  • Procedure volume: Prof. Dr. Boris Pfaffenbach has managed 9,000 surgeries at Academic Hospital Solingen.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics specializing in obesity, such as St. Martinus-Krankenhaus Düsseldorf, often function as national training bases for dietitians. This integration suggests that success rates in these facilities are tied to superior nutritional follow-up protocols. Choosing a clinic with an on-site obesity center rather than a general gastroenterology department ensures access to these specialized long-term support networks.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while the procedure jumpstarts weight loss, significant regain occurs without nutrition coaching. Many recommend joining support groups or therapy to manage lifestyle changes effectively after the initial plateau.

What are the risks after complex polyp removal in Germany?

Primary risks after complex polyp removal in Germany include delayed bleeding and abdominal cramping. Bleeding occurs in a small percentage of cases within 1 to 7 days. Specialized centers like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic provide advanced endoscopic clips to manage these rare events safely.

  • Bleeding risk: Most common side effect, often appearing 1–7 days after the procedure.
  • Abdominal pain: Affects 20–50% of patients due to air used during the endoscopy.
  • Perforation rate: Serious but rare risk, occurring in 0.5–5% of complex EMR/ESD cases.
  • Post-polypectomy syndrome: Temporary fever and pain caused by a minor serosal burn.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that German academic hospitals, such as Medical Center in Solingen, maintain high safety standards by performing thousands of procedures annually. Specialized doctors like Dr. Siegbert Rossol at Nordwest Clinic use advanced EMR/ESD techniques. This high volume allows clinics to manage complex cases with a 95% rate of procedures proceeding without any complications.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that following a soft diet for 2 weeks is essential to avoid pain. Many emphasize that while fatigue from sedation is common, most feel back to normal within 48 hours.

How long is the outpatient stay for a colonoscopy with polypectomy in Germany?

A standard outpatient colonoscopy with polypectomy in Germany requires a clinic stay of 3 to 4 hours. Most patients undergo a 15-minute procedure followed by 1 to 2 hours of supervised recovery. You can typically leave the facility by early afternoon on the same day.

  • Procedure duration: The colonoscopy and polyp removal usually take 20 to 45 minutes.
  • Sedation recovery: Patients under propofol typically regain full alertness within 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Observation period: Clinics require a 1 to 2 hour post-procedure monitoring window before discharge.
  • Travel timing: International patients can often fly home the same evening after a morning appointment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German academic centers like Medical Center in Solingen or Nordwest Clinic handle massive outpatient volumes, often exceeding 60,000 patients annually. This high frequency streamlines the recovery process, as these facilities use dedicated recovery pods designed for rapid, safe turnover. Patients benefit from standardized safety protocols that allow discharge faster than in smaller, non-specialized clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the experience is very efficient and they feel well-supported by attentive translators during the short recovery. Most emphasize that you should bring someone to help you get back to your hotel since you cannot drive after sedation.

Is it possible to perform a gastroscopy and colonoscopy at the same time?

Simultaneous gastroscopy and colonoscopy is a routine procedure in Germany. Clinics perform both exams during one 45-minute session under propofol sedation for maximum comfort. This combined approach allows for a comprehensive digestive evaluation and requires only one recovery period.

  • Preparation time: Patients usually start bowel cleansing 1–2 days before the scheduled procedure.
  • Dietary restrictions: Stop solid food 24 hours prior and maintain fasting for 6–8 hours.
  • Cleansing protocol: Drink 3–4 liters of lavage solution to ensure clear visualization of the colon.
  • Recovery period: Most patients recover from sedation within 1–2 hours after the dual exam.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordwest Clinic treat over 60,000 patients annually. Our data shows these academic hospitals often have in-house research institutes. This allows patients to access advanced interventional endoscopy and tumor diagnostics that smaller private practices might not provide.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that strict adherence to the hydration and cleansing protocol is vital to avoid rescheduling. Many recommend requesting propofol sedation in advance to ensure the entire experience is completely painless.

Where can I find the best gastroenterology centers in Germany for English-speaking patients?

Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Dusseldorf host the largest concentrations of internationally-oriented gastroenterology centers for English-speaking patients. These cities feature JCI-accredited facilities and university hospitals. They provide dedicated international departments and English-fluent specialists like Dr. Siegbert Rossol, ensuring seamless communication and high-quality care.

  • Berlin: Features Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, offering comprehensive English-language support and dedicated international desks.
  • Hamburg: Home to Asklepios Hospital Barmbek, recognized as a top clinic for foreign patients.
  • Dusseldorf area: Includes St. Martinus-Krankenhaus and nearby clinics in Solingen, serving 72,000+ annual patients.
  • Frankfurt: Centers like Nordwest Clinic provide specialized care in interventional sonography and oncology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Berlin and Munich are popular, the North Rhine-Westphalia region around Dusseldorf offers a unique advantage. Cities like Solingen and Duisburg house specialized academic hospitals, such as Medical Center in Solingen, which reports performing 9,000+ gastroenterological procedures. These clinics often provide more personal attention and shorter waiting times compared to the high-volume metropolitan university centers.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while top doctors speak perfect English, hospital bureaucracy can still require German. They recommend confirming English-language support for paperwork before traveling to ensure a smooth experience.

Why should I choose Germany for complex gastroenterology treatments?

Germany leads in complex gastroenterology due to government-regulated quality standards and interventional endoscopy. Centres like Medical Center in Solingen and Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex provide multidisciplinary care. Specialist Dr Boris Pfaffenbach and Dr Siegbert Rossol offer expertise in tumour resections and hepatology.

  • Specialised centres: Major hubs like Charité Berlin treat 840,000+ patients annually.
  • Modern techniques: Specialists perform EMR and ESD to remove tumours without surgery.
  • Expertise: Dr Siegbert Rossol has 30+ years of experience in interventional sonography.
  • Certified oncology: Solingen hosts Germany's first certified colorectal cancer centre.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German university hospitals often provide intensive treatments. However, smaller certified centres like Medical Center in Solingen offer similar success rates with faster intake. Large networks like Nordrhein-Westfalen handle 145,000+ patients yearly. This makes them highly efficient for complex multi-organ diagnostics.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Germany find the diagnostic process thorough. They feel calm knowing specialists like Dr Boris Pfaffenbach provide clear therapy plans. Personal translators and attentive coordinators help Australians feel confident and supported during their hospital stay.

Will my endoscopy or colonoscopy in Germany be painful?

Endoscopy and colonoscopy in Germany are not painful. Specialists routinely use a Schlafspritze, which provides deep twilight sleep. Patients remain relaxed and functionally unconscious throughout the procedure. Most wake up with no memory of the exam and feel no physical discomfort.

  • Sedation method: Doctors use short-acting sedatives like propofol for complete physical comfort.
  • Pain receptors: Internal linings lack pain receptors. This means patients do not feel polyp removal or biopsies.
  • Gas comfort: Clinics use CO2 gas which absorbs quickly to prevent bloating.
  • Amnesia effect: Medication causes temporary memory loss. Patients rarely recall the procedure as a result.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German clinics like Nordwest offer five-day diagnostic programmes. These often bundle multiple examinations, such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy, into one visit. This efficiency is ideal for Australians travelling long distances who need comprehensive results quickly.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the bowel preparation more inconvenient than the actual procedure. Many report waking up feeling well-rested. They are often surprised by how quickly the examination finished in Germany.

What advanced gastroenterology diagnostic tools are available in German hospitals?

German hospitals use tools like 3D ultrasound, high-resolution colonoscopies, and interventional endosonography. These detect early-stage cancers and motility issues. Leading university centres integrate artificial intelligence for lesion detection. They also use capsule endoscopy for non-invasive exploration of the small intestine. Precise imaging allows for accurate diagnoses.

  • Endoscopic ultrasound: Combines internal imaging and high-frequency ultrasound for deep tissue evaluation.
  • Capsule endoscopy: Uses a swallowable camera to track hidden gastrointestinal bleeding safely.
  • 3D ultrasound: Provides detailed abdominal views at specialised centres like Nordwest Clinic.
  • Interventional sonography: Permits real-time biopsy sampling for precise staging of digestive tumours.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with over 60,000 annual patients, such as Medical Center in Solingen, often provide diagnostics within five days. This high volume allows doctors like Prof. Dr Boris Pfaffenbach to specialise in complex therapeutic diets. They also provide endoscopic treatments to streamline the journey from diagnosis to recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Germany note that specialists quickly move from standard scopes to tools like capsule endoscopy. This occurs when initial tests are inconclusive. They appreciate the polite medical teams and the attentive translators who support them during intensive diagnostic programmes.

Is there a language barrier when communicating with German gastroenterology specialists?

German gastroenterology specialists are typically fluent in clinical English. Many have trained at institutions like King's College London or Mount Sinai New York. However, the broader medical infrastructure remains strictly German-speaking. Professional interpreters or bilingual coordinators often help with admin tasks and support staff interactions.

  • Specialist communication: Doctors like Dr Thomas Brunk often have international experience in English-speaking hospitals.
  • Clinical literacy: Specialists regularly publish in international journals and handle consultations in English professionally.
  • Support staff hurdles: Most receptionists and nurses speak only German. This can affect booking and recovery support.
  • Informed consent: German law requires clear understanding for procedures like colonoscopies. This sometimes requires translators.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many major university hospitals, such as Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, prioritise domestic patients. They may have limited reception services for international travellers. Selecting a certified specialist centre like the Medical Center in Solingen often provides better access to coordinators. These staff manage translations and logistics throughout the treatment process.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Germany report feeling more confident when using attentive translators for support during consultations. They also note that coordinators who handle formal written opinions in multiple languages improve clarity for follow-up care.

Can I bring a family member or companion with me for my gastroenterology procedure in Germany?

German clinics allow companions during registration and consultations. However, strict sterile protocols bar them from procedure rooms. If patients receive sedation, an escort must legally collect them afterward. Unaccompanied patients cannot drive or use public transport alone for 24 hours following the procedure.

  • Mandatory collection: Clinics require an escort to sign patients out after sedation.
  • Sterile zones: Companions must wait in lounges during endoscopies for patient safety.
  • Post-sedation safety: Patients are legally unfit to drive or cycle for 24 hours.
  • Administrative support: Bilingual companions can assist with medical consent forms during registration.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Major university hospitals like Charite have high prestige. However, international patients often face longer wait times there. Research-driven centres like Nordwest Clinic or Medical Center in Solingen often provide faster intake. These facilities also tend to offer more support for companions during diagnostic workups.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Germany find translators and coordinators essential for navigating consultations comfortably. Many note that having a companion provides peace of mind while receiving therapy information from specialists.
