We feel in safe hands
We returned to the hospital for an unplanned, emergency visit after my father's usual post-transplant check ups. I can't thank enough Aliser for being so helpful and available in arranging everything last minute (on a Sunday!). The doctor's expertise and empathy is second to none. I would especially like to thank our surgeon Dr. Yuzer and Dr. Ahmet for their expertise, kind support and care. We feel in safe hands.

Her coordination efforts were astounding as she was able to contact the hospital and coordinate all activities with short notice
Bookimed was a tremendous help to me. Dr Hanna was an amazing coordinator. She helped answer all my questions, looked for different hospitals and pricing, and always responded to me the same day. Her coordination efforts were astounding as she was able to contact the hospital and coordinate all activities with short notice. I truly appreciated her help and support throughout the whole process. I would definitely recommend Bookimed for anyone seeking affordable healthcare and quality service. Very happy with my results.
Dr Hanna’s support and coordination. It was truly an effortless experience knowing she was there to help meet all my needs. Her support gave me the comfort in using health services outside the US.
Nothing major. Took a little time to get my final report (about a week). The doctors assistant was apparently sick but I was happy regardless since the results of the colonoscopy and endoscopy were given immediately after the procedure.
About Bookimed service
Bookimed was the ultimate reason I chose to seek medical services outside the US. They made the experience well coordinated and trouble free. Dr Hanna was super responsive and willing to help in any way possible. I was able to get a response the same day (often times within a few seconds of asking). I was very happy with Bookimed and recommend it to anyone looking for healthcare abroad. Kudos to the whole team for making it a great experience.

Personally, I was satisfied 👍
Honest review!!! Had a gastrochecap! I was satisfied with the procedure! Fast, competent, everything was clear and accessible! The price is average (in Germany, for example, the same procedure is three times more expensive 🤷‍♂️)! The whole procedure lasted 20 minutes under sedation! Results and recommendations were immediately within 5 minutes after the procedure! During the procedure (endoscopy and colonoscopy) I did not feel the slightest discomfort! I can confidently recommend this clinic! Personally, I was satisfied 👍
Quickness of service delivery!

- The doctor seems to be experienced, he seems to have told everything, he gave answers to our questions
The organization was a success, transfer, hotel reservation. The doctor seems to be experienced, he seems to have told everything, he gave answers to our questions, but it seems that he didn’t get into our problem, it’s clear that this is his daily work, but for some reason it seemed that they would give us more time and take care of our issue more closely, but our expectations are our problems. They were not in the hospital, there was only a diagnosis.

We did not go to the clinic, we sent histology for review. Answers waited a long time and pulled out, we can say with forceps. All the answers were very concise, constantly had to ask for the addition. They paid for the advice of the doctor, but in fact did not receive it. In general, this hospital disappointed us. Perhaps the doctors there are good, but remote consultation is lame very much. Constantly communicated with Yulia Andreychuk. Yulia answered all questions quickly and provided information well. I was pleased with her work.

I have been following my condition for two weeks, and the result is stable
My review is positive, because in Medipole I managed to get vital medical care. Before that, my condition was serious, because in fact I felt bad every day for many years. In the morning I could not wake up for several hours, during the day I was hampered by a weakness with which I could not cope, in the evening and at night there was severe insomnia. In this state, I could not lead a normal life. This is a very brief, brief description of my condition, which I have had for about the past 15 years, a detailed list of symptoms may take more than one leaf, and I decided not to describe it. In 2015, I decided to get tested in Russia, and I approached him very seriously. I visited several dozens of different doctors, described my condition in detail, and asked for help. I was surveyed in Russia in 2015, 2016 and 2017. About the result I will say briefly: they did not help me. Totally. Therefore, in 2018 I applied for help to the Bookimed company, and they recommended me to be examined in the Turkish hospital Medipol, where I traveled in December 2018. It took the Turkish doctors three days to find the cause of my problems: this is a severe vitamin D deficiency. The therapist Derya Argun helped me, she was able to name the cause of the problems and prescribe an analysis for vitamin D in a few minutes. When the analysis revealed the cause, I immediately began to correct vitamin D. And my condition changed. I began to feel as good as I had not felt for many years. I had trouble sleeping, weakness and my well-being completely changed. Now I can get up at 6 am, I can feel normal all day, I can fall asleep in less than one hour. I have been following my condition for two weeks, and the result is stable. In fact, I feel so good, like I was reborn. And I was given precise recommendations on how and how many months to take vitamin D, how often to monitor its amount in the blood, so I know what I need to do next.     In the additional part of the review I will write other details of my trip. When I flew out of Moscow, I had an assumption that the cause of the problem was a disease of the digestive organs, so on the first day I first went for an examination by a gastroenterologist. For a plausible review, it should be noted that there is a noticeable drawback in the organization of Medipol’s work - the work of the doctors is accompanied by haste, vanity, and disorganization. Transfer from the hotel once was half an hour late. Before the trip, we agreed that I would go to a gastroenterologist. But when I arrived, at first the lady did not accept me for more than an hour, and then left the office, and without a word took another patient, although I had already paid money for the consultation and waited more than an hour. The translator suggested going to another doctor. I specially pre-printed my list of symptoms on a sheet and told the translator that I needed a literal translation, and the translator removed some phrases from my text without warning, as I was in a hurry. And this tendency to do everything quickly is negative. I had an abdominal ultrasound scan, but the results that I was given did not indicate any size of the gallbladder (number in millimeters) or other organs. The doctor then explained to me that they have many patients, and therefore they do not write detailed characteristics in the conclusions, but simply confine themselves to words like "parameter normal". That is, the documents with the results contain little information. I did a gastroscopy, but when I asked to give me the results of the research on a flash drive (video), they refused. Instead, I printed on paper six photos from the endoscope. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that in Medipol sometimes not the most modern technologies are used. To the gastroenterologist, I am grateful that he referred me to the therapist Derya Argun, and this is the main thing. But nevertheless, because of the fuss, I could not discuss my health with him in detail, but ideally this possibility should be.      As for my coordinator, Dmitry Belik, I am generally pleased with his work, but I can only say that I have lost contact with him lately, because, according to Dmitry, he has a lot of work. I would like the connection with the medical coordinator to be stable.     These are the main details of my trip to Medipol for treatment. As I said, my trip was definitely a success, dramatically changed my life for the better, and I am very pleased with it.

FAQ about Gastroenterology in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Turkish gastroenterology centers maintain top international standards through Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and ISO certifications. Many facilities, such as Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli Hospital, hold elite designations. Specialists often carry memberships in the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and American College of Surgeons.

  • Hospital accreditation: JCI certification is the primary benchmark for safety and quality in Turkey.
  • Clinical affiliations: Anadolu Medical Center maintains a long-standing affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  • Specialist credentials: Many doctors hold European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) active memberships.
  • Technical standards: Facilities like Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital utilize TÜV NORD DIN EN ISO standards.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Memorial Şişli Hospital was the first in Turkey and the 21st globally to achieve JCI accreditation. This early adoption of international standards has created a culture of excellence that now spans over 90 departments. High-volume centers with these credentials typically attract patients from over 160 countries annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that JCI accreditation is a reliable indicator of service quality for endoscopic procedures. They often note that finding a specialist with international training, such as at US-based institutions, adds significant peace of mind during complex diagnostics.

Turkish gastroenterology centers follow international safety protocols for endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. These include Joint Commission International (JCI) standards and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) guidelines. Clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital use advanced monitoring and sterilization to ensure patient safety and high success rates.

  • Pre-operative screening: Patients undergo mandatory blood tests, ECG, and chest X-rays before procedures.
  • Intra-operative monitoring: Teams use continuous pulse oximetry, capnography, and blood pressure tracking.
  • Sterilization standards: Accredited centers use WHO-approved protocols and often employ single-use endoscopic accessories.
  • Surgical safety checks: Surgeons perform full 'time-out' checks to verify patient ID and site.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that JCI-accredited clinics in Istanbul, such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, maintain higher safety ratings by using dedicated anesthesiologists for all sedation-based endoscopies. While some smaller clinics might use general staff, 4.7+ rated hospitals consistently provide a separate specialist to monitor vitals. This practice significantly reduces risks during complex procedures like POEM or ERCP.

Patient Consensus: Patients note they felt zero discomfort during 20-minute procedures under sedation. Many appreciate that results and specialist recommendations are often provided within minutes after waking up.

High-volume Turkish centers report success rates exceeding 90% for EMR and ERCP procedures. Gastroenterologists like Dr. Erdem Kocak at Liv Hospital Vadistanbul perform advanced therapeutic endoscopy. National ERCP success rates often reach 92% in major hospitals. Most EMR procedures for colon polyps achieve a 98% success rate.

  • Procedure success: High-volume centers report a 92% success rate for complex ERCP cases.
  • EMR outcomes: Endoscopic mucosal resection for polyps shows a 98% success rate.
  • ERCP safety: Complication rates like pancreatitis range between 5% and 15% locally.
  • Clinic credentials: Memorial Sisli Hospital was the first JCI-accredited facility in Turkey.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that clinics with high international patient volumes, like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental which serves 250,000+ patients annually, offer more robust post-procedure monitoring. Doctors such as Dr. Tarik Akar have published 19+ international papers, reflecting a deep academic focus on complication management. Choosing a professor-led team often ensures access to advanced technologies like AI-supported MRI and 512-slice CT for precise pre-surgical mapping.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that procedures under sedation are fast and comfortable, typically lasting 20 minutes. It is important to confirm post-procedure monitoring into your stay to manage potential issues like mild pancreatitis early.

Medical tourists should plan for 14 to 21 days in Turkey for major gastroenterology. This timeframe covers 3 to 10 days of hospitalization and outpatient follow-up. Facilities like Anadolu Medical Center or Memorial Şişli Hospital require stable vitals before clearing patients for international flights.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 3 to 10 days inpatient depending on the procedure complexity.
  • Post-op monitoring: Outpatient follow-up usually lasts 7 days after hospital discharge.
  • Total duration: Major surgeries like stomach resection require up to 21 days total.
  • Diagnostic timeline: Simple screenings like gastroscopy or colonoscopy typically take only 1 day.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that all-inclusive packages often bridge the gap between hospital discharge and flight clearance. For instance, Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital bundles 3 days of hospitalization with 4 days of hotel stay. This structure ensures patients remain near their specialist, like Dr. Bilal Ergul, during the most critical early recovery phase.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is vital to book flexible return flights. One traveler reported an 8-day trip extending to 3 weeks due to necessary extra monitoring. Most emphasize that recovery under sedation is fast, but waiting for final results and recommendations before flying is essential for safety.

Turkish gastroenterology protocols emphasize fast recovery through proactive pain management and advanced endoscopic techniques. Most diagnostic procedures allow same-day discharge. Complex cases like POEM or ERCP require 1 to 3 nights of monitored hospital stay. Medical teams prioritize patient comfort using sedation and early-stage analgesia.

  • Pain management: Doctors provide proactive IV relief using paracetamol and local anesthetics.
  • Hospital stay: Diagnostic endoscopies permit same-day discharge for most international patients.
  • Recovery timeline: Strict diet and activity restrictions usually last 3 to 7 days.
  • Clinical monitoring: Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital provides 3-day inpatient monitoring for POEM.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish hospitals with JCI accreditation, like Memorial Şişli or Anadolu Medical Center, often use American-standard protocols through international affiliations. Our data shows these centers typically bundle comprehensive pre-operative diagnostics into their packages. This thorough screening reduces the risk of post-procedure issues. It also allows for much faster discharge compared to Western European clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that procedures under sedation are completely painless. They appreciate receiving clear medical results and recovery instructions within minutes of waking up.

Ideal candidates for outpatient gastroenterology in Turkey include stable patients under 75 with a BMI below 35 and no sleep apnea. Procedures like gastroscopy and colonoscopy typically allow same-day discharge within 1–3 hours. Candidates must have clear cardiac and pulmonary function to undergo sedation safely at accredited facilities.

  • Age and health: Modern clinics prioritize patients under 75 with controlled chronic conditions for same-day discharge.
  • Medical clearance: Stable cardiac and pulmonary status is mandatory for procedures requiring general anesthesia or sedation.
  • BMI limits: Patients with a BMI under 35 and no respiratory issues are preferred for outpatient safety.
  • Contraindications: Uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c over 8%) or recent heart events usually require 24-hour inpatient monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume centers like Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli Hospital shows a strict focus on pre-arrival screening. While basic diagnostics range from $200 to $200, clinics often upgrade patients to overnight stays if they use high-dose anticoagulants. Sharing your full medication list early helps avoid unexpected hospitalization costs upon arrival in Istanbul.

Patient Consensus: Patients mention that completing bowel preparation correctly is vital to avoid repeating the travel process. Many note that having a dedicated translator makes the quick 20-minute sedation and recovery much less stressful.

Which cities are most preferred by international patients seeking advanced gastroenterology treatments in Turkey?

Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya are the primary hubs for international patients seeking advanced gastroenterology. Istanbul leads with the highest concentration of JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital. These cities offer complex procedures, including POEM for achalasia and advanced robotic surgeries, within specialized medical infrastructure.

  • Istanbul expertise: Features global hubs like Anadolu Medical Center for complex ESD and POEM techniques.
  • Ankara infrastructure: Preferred for academic excellence at institutions like Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital.
  • Antalya recovery: Memorial Antalya Hospital offers specialized gastrointestinal care combined with resort-style post-operative recovery.
  • Integrated services: Major centers provide dedicated international departments handling airport transfers and multilingual translation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Istanbul hospitals like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental serve over 500,000 patients annually by centralizing diagnostics. These centers use on-site 512-slice CT and 3 Tesla MRI to complete full gastrointestinal workups in 1 day. This efficiency often reduces total travel time for international patients by 48 hours compared to smaller regional clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Istanbul feels like a one-stop shop where everything from halal meals to airport pickups is handled. Those choosing Antalya appreciate the calm environment, while patients in Ankara emphasize the deep medical expertise found in university-affiliated hospitals.

How can I verify the quality of a Turkish hospital or doctor?

Verifying quality requires checking JCI accreditation, Turkish Ministry of Health authorization, and doctor board certifications. Top hospitals like Memorial Şişli Hospital and Anadolu Medical Center maintain JCI standards. Professional registration through the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) confirms a doctor's legal license and specialized training.

  • Hospital accreditation: Joint Commission International (JCI) is the gold standard for safety and hygiene.
  • Doctor credentials: Check for Turkish Society of Gastroenterology membership and international training or certifications.
  • Clinical research: High-quality gastroenterologists like Dr. Erdem Kocak have 100+ international scientific publications.
  • Facility volume: Leading centers like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental serve over 250,000 patients every year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that top-rated clinics with 4.7+ scores often provide in-house translation and same-day diagnostic results. For example, Memorial Antalya Hospital delivers gastroscopy reports within 5 minutes of the procedure. This efficiency usually indicates well-organized clinical protocols and high-tech laboratory infrastructure.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is vital to have a dedicated translator to navigate the clinic and clarify medical results. Many emphasize that choosing a JCI-accredited facility made them feel as safe as they would in Europe or the US.

What is included in an “all-inclusive” gastroenterology package in Turkey?

All-inclusive gastroenterology packages in Turkey bundle medical procedures with essential travel logistics. These typically cover specialist consultations, diagnostics like gastroscopy or colonoscopy, and general anesthesia. Standard inclusions often feature VIP airport transfers, 4-star or 5-star hotel stays, and professional translation services.

  • Medical services: Packages include specialist consultations, preoperative blood tests, and procedures like POEM surgery.
  • Hospital stay: Inpatient care ranges from same-day discharge for endoscopies to 3 nights for surgery.
  • Logistics: Dedicated VIP transfers between the airport, hotel, and clinic are standard inclusions.
  • Language support: Personal interpreters assist with medical documents and 24/7 coordination via WhatsApp.
  • Accommodation: Surgical bundles often provide 4 nights in a hotel with full board meals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that while many clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital treat patients from over 160 countries, package inclusions vary significantly by city. Istanbul clinics often include higher-end hotel stays, while Antalya centers frequently bundle post-procedure recovery with wellness amenities. Always verify if pathology fees for biopsies are included, as these are often requested separately during the procedure.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to confirm if sedation and specific lab tests are part of the initial price. Many emphasize that having a dedicated translator makes the process much more comfortable and stress-free during hospital visits.

How long should I plan to stay in Turkey for gastroenterology treatment?

Plan a stay in Turkey for 2 to 14 days depending on your specific procedure. Diagnostic tests like colonoscopy or gastroscopy require 2 to 4 days. Endoscopic treatments typically need 5 to 7 days. Major surgical interventions like stomach resection require 10 to 14 days total.

  • Diagnostic tests: Stay 2–4 days for prep, the procedure, and post-sedation recovery before flying.
  • Endoscopic treatments: Budget 5–7 days for procedures like POEM, ESD, or ERCP and monitoring.
  • Surgical interventions: Plan 10–14 days for GErd surgery, stomach resection, or gallbladder removal.
  • Recovery buffer: Add 2–3 days for unexpected nausea, dietary adjustments, or final clinical clearance.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows a distinct trend where clinics and patients prioritize logistical ease. Hospitals like Memorial Sisli and Hisar Intercontinental often serve international patients with all-inclusive packages. These bundles typically include 3–4 days of hospitalization plus 4–7 nights in a nearby hotel. This structure ensures you remain near your doctor during the most critical recovery window without incurring extra hospital room costs.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize staying within a short taxi ride of the clinic to avoid travel stress. They also note that follow-up exams are often scheduled 3 to 5 days after the procedure, which can catch you off guard if your flight is booked too early.

Do Turkish gastroenterologists and support staff speak English?

Most Turkish gastroenterologists in private hospitals are fluent in English and often hold international credentials from the US or Europe. Support staff proficiency varies, but major centers provide dedicated interpreters and English-speaking coordinators. Clinics like Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli serve patients from over 160 countries.

Are there restrictions on bringing my own medications to Turkey?

Turkey permits travelers to bring personal medications with a valid doctor's prescription and original pharmacy packaging. You should carry only a 30-day supply of essential drugs. Documentation must be in English or Turkish. Narcotic and psychotropic substances require additional authorization from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

  • Documentation: Carry a signed doctor's letter detailing your specific condition and dosages.
  • Packaging: Keep all medications in original containers with clear pharmacy labels attached.
  • Quantity: Limit supplies to the duration of stay, typically up to 30 days.
  • Restricted items: Narcotics, opioids, and ADHD medications face strict scrutiny or potential bans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows clinics like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental or Anadolu Medical Center often provide equivalent local prescriptions for international patients. Instead of risking customs delays with large quantities, patients can access high-quality gastrointestinal medications directly through their treating hospital after arrival. This is especially helpful for complex treatments like POEM or inflammatory bowel disease management.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is vital to keep all pills in carry-on bags. Some travelers report quick passage, while others emphasize that having a translated doctor’s note prevents long questioning at customs.
