Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Arthroscopic meniscus repair in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is arthroscopic meniscusrepair safe and who is a good candidate in Italy?

Arthroscopic meniscus repair in Italy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure with a success rate between 80% and 90%. Surgeons use specialized cameras and small instruments to preserve the natural shock absorber of the knee, significantly reducing the long-term risk of osteoarthritis.

  • Ideal candidates: Active patients under 50 with acute, traumatic tears usually see the best results.
  • Tear location: Repairs are most successful in the vascularized red zone with high blood supply.
  • Safety standards: Italian facilities like Maria Cecilia Hospital follow strict Joint Commission International (JCI) safety protocols.
  • Expert experience: Top specialists like Dr. Roberto Danchise have performed over 18,000 orthopedic procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many consider age the primary factor, Bookimed data shows surgeon experience with specific zones is more critical. Dr. Roberto Danchise at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi performed Italy's first meniscus transplant. Choosing a surgeon with 10,000+ arthroscopic cases ensures they can accurately assess red-zone versus white-zone healing potential mid-surgery.

Patient Consensus: Fresh, peripheral tears under 3cm typically result in 95% success rates. Patients emphasize that aggressive icing during the first 14 days is essential to manage swelling and ensure a smooth recovery.

How is the procedure performed and what technique is used in Italian hospitals?

Italian surgeons perform arthroscopic meniscus repair using minimally invasive techniques involving 2–3 small portals. Specialized clinics primarily utilize all-inside methods with FAST-FIX or Meniscal Cinch devices. These procedures typically last 30–90 minutes under spinal or general anesthesia to ensure precise suturing and rapid recovery.

  • Technique variety: Surgeons utilize all-inside, inside-out, and outside-in suturing based on tear location.
  • Advanced hardware: Specialized implants like FAST-FIX provide high-strength fixation for complex bucket-handle tears.
  • Biological enhancement: Private clinics often combine vertical mattress sutures with fibrin clots to boost healing.
  • Patient preparation: Surgeons may rasp the meniscus edges first to stimulate blood flow and recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic expertise is concentrated in Lombardy, where surgeons like Roberto Danchise have performed over 16,000 arthroscopic procedures. Data shows Milanese clinics often prioritize all-inside techniques for faster surgery times. In contrast, southern facilities may stick to traditional outside-in methods for peripheral tears. Many top-tier Italian hospitals now integrate these repairs into fast-track protocols with early passive motion.

Patient Consensus: Many patients highlight that private clinics in Milan and Rome offer significantly faster access than public hospitals. They often emphasize the importance of confirming if edge rasping is included to improve long-term repair success.

How long does recovery take and what is the post-operative timeline?

Recovery after arthroscopic meniscus repair in Italy takes 3 to 6 months for a full return to pivoting sports. Patients use crutches and a locked knee brace for 4 to 6 weeks. The exact timeline depends on whether the tear is horizontal or radial.

  • Initial phase: Use crutches for 4 to 6 weeks to protect the repaired tissue.
  • Brace protocol: Brace remains locked at 0 to 30 degrees for the first 2 weeks.
  • Weight bearing: Begin 20% to 50% weight bearing between weeks 2 and 6.
  • Sport return: Radial tears require 6 months while horizontal tears may heal in 3.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers like Maria Cecilia Hospital prioritize early quad activation to prevent rapid muscle atrophy. Some specialists, including those with 16,000 surgeries like Dr. Roberto Danchise, may request a 4-month MRI. This clearance is vital before resuming high-impact sports like football or skiing.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize tracking weekly flexion angles to visualize progress. Many recommend booking private physiotherapy early in Italy to avoid public waitlists and ensure consistent quad strengthening.

What are possible complications and how can they be minimized?

Arthroscopic meniscus repair in Italy is generally safe, but potential complications include joint stiffness, saphenous nerve irritation, re-tears, or infection. Minimized by choosing high-volume surgeons, these risks decrease significantly when patients follow strict range-of-motion protocols and delay high-impact sports for 9 to 12 months.

  • Joint stiffness: Arthrofibrosis affects 10–20% of patients; start gentle range-of-motion exercises on day 1.
  • Nerve irritation: Saphenous nerve numbness occurs in 15% of cases; early walking helps resolve symptoms.
  • Re-tear risk: Common with complex patterns; avoid pivoting sports like soccer for 6–9 months.
  • Surgeon experience: Complications drop when surgeons have performed over 200 meniscus repairs in their career.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic excellence is often defined by extreme specialization. Dr. Roberto Danchise at IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzo - Sant'Ambrogio has performed over 16,000 arthroscopic procedures. For complex posterior tears, ask about the inside-out suture technique. Data suggests this method may reduce nerve irritation compared to all-inside anchors.

Patient Consensus: Many patients emphasize that attending physical therapy 5 times weekly is essential to avoid joint locking. Others warn that persistent swelling after 3 months may indicate missed cartilage damage requiring follow-up imaging.

Do I need medical travel insurance and how long should I stay in Italy for the surgery and rehabilitation?

Medical travel insurance covering at least €30,000 is mandatory for Schengen visa applicants and strongly recommended for all patients. Plan for a 14 to 21-day stay in Italy to ensure safe flying after arthroscopic meniscus repair and to complete initial post-operative physiotherapy.

  • Insurance coverage: Must include emergency care, repatriation, and specific orthopedic surgery complications.
  • Stay duration: Patients are mobile within 48 hours but require 2-3 weeks for stabilization.
  • Safety window: Avoid flying for 10 days to minimize deep vein thrombosis risks.
  • Clinical care: Facilities like Maria Cecilia Hospital provide JCI-accredited orthopedic environments for recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic excellence is highly concentrated. Dr. Roberto Danchise alone has performed over 16,000 arthroscopic procedures. Choosing a high-volume surgeon significantly lowers the risk of needing extended, expensive stays for complication management.

Patient Consensus: Travelers advise booking flexible flights and budgeting €2,000–$5,000 extra for unforeseen stay extensions. Early crutches training is essential to navigate Italian travel safely after your procedure.

Which cities or centres in Italy are considered best for arthroscopic meniscus repair?

Milan, Bologna, and Rome are Italy's leading hubs for arthroscopic meniscus repair, featuring institutions like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio and Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli. These centers provide access to specialized surgeons and JCI-accredited facilities, offering advanced minimally invasive techniques for sports-related and degenerative knee injuries.

  • Milan orthopedic leaders: Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of Italy's complex revision orthopedic surgeries.
  • Expert surgical volume: Dr. Roberto Danchise has completed over 16,000 successful arthroscopic procedures.
  • Bologna research focus: Rizzoli Institute specializes in meniscus preservation and complex musculoskeletal research.
  • Rome clinical capacity: Ospedale San Carlo di Nancy treats 15,000 patients annually using arthroscopy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While Milan offers high-end private care for athletes, Maria Cecilia Hospital near Bologna provides a strategic advantage with its Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and proximity to a major airport. This facility is a top-rated choice for orthopedic disorders because it balances internationally recognized safety standards with expert care from surgeons who handle thousands of joint procedures.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that private centers in northern cities offer faster access to surgeons who prioritize suturing and repair over simple trimming. Seeking an early MRI review and arranging immediate post-operative physiotherapy are vital steps for achieving the best functional recovery.

Will there be visible scars and when can I shower or resume sports?

Arthroscopic meniscus repair in Italy leaves minimal 0.5-inch scars that fade within 12 months. Patients can typically shower 24–48 hours after surgery using waterproof dressings. Light walking starts immediately. Low-impact cycling resumes in 2–6 weeks. High-impact sports require 12 weeks for tissue healing.

  • Incision size: Surgeons use two small portals, resulting in scars less than 1 inch.
  • Showering protocol: Waterproof bandages allow quick hygiene. Avoid soaking wounds for 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Running timeline: Most patients return to light jogging between 6 to 8 weeks post-op.
  • Full contact: Competitive sports like football often require 3 to 6 months of rehabilitation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian clinics like Maria Cecilia Hospital often combine JCI-accredited surgical precision with early mobilization. While standard advice suggests rest, our data shows top surgeons favor immediate weight-bearing. This approach helps prevent blood clots and speeds up your return to sports. Confirm if your package includes specialized physical therapy sessions in Bari or Rome.

Patient Consensus: Patients often feel surprised by how small the portal marks are after healing. Most suggest keeping the knee elevated during the first week to make showering easier.
