Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Hallux valgus surgery in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is hallux valgus surgery in Italy safe, and what are the main risks?

Hallux valgus surgery in Italy is safe, maintaining efficacy rates between 85% and 95%. High standards are upheld at JCI-accredited and IRCCS-certified facilities like Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio. Surgeons utilize minimally invasive techniques with 3–4 mm incisions to reduce tissue trauma and speed recovery.

  • Surgical efficacy: Success rates for functional improvement range from 85% to 95% nationwide.
  • Major risks: Complications include bunion recurrence, nerve irritation, stiffness, and hardware-related discomfort.
  • Specialized centers: Milan hospitals like San Raffaele perform over 52,000 annual operations safely.
  • Safety certifications: Top clinics hold IRCCS status, combining advanced clinical care with medical research.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many choose Milan for its high-volume centers, Maria Cecilia Hospital in Bologna is a standout choice for orthopedic safety. It was ranked as a top facility for orthopedic disorders by Bookimed patients and maintains prestigious JCI accreditation. This clinic manages complex cases by leveraging a multidisciplinary team approach often reserved for high-risk cardiac patients.

Patient Consensus: Recovery is often longer than expected, with swelling sometimes lasting over a year. Patients emphasize that strict non-weightbearing for 6 weeks and religious icing are vital for avoiding post-op fractures.

What qualifications should I check when choosing an Italian surgeon and clinic?

Choosing an Italian surgeon for hallux valgus surgery requires verifying their registration with the Provincial Medical Council (OMCeO) and the National Federation of Medical Councils (FNOMCeO). Prioritize clinics with IRCCS accreditation from the Italian Ministry of Health and surgeons specialized in orthopedic foot and ankle procedures.

  • Medical registration: Verify active licensure on the FNOMCeO database for legal practice.
  • Specialized accreditation: Look for IRCCS status, a prestigious research-based designation for top hospitals.
  • Surgical volume: Ensure surgeons perform at least 50 hallux valgus procedures annually.
  • Professional boards: Confirm membership in the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SIOT).

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan has become Italy's orthopedic hub, especially for revision surgeries. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio alone handles 75% of the country’s revision orthopedic cases. If you have a complex bunion recurrence, focusing your search on Milan-based clinics with IRCCS and ISO certifications offers the highest level of institutional expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize verifying case-specific volume directly with surgeons. Many successful outcomes are linked to surgeons who provide documented revision rates below 5% and show recent results from minimally invasive techniques.

Which surgical techniques are routinely used in Italy for hallux valgus correction?

Surgical techniques for hallux valgus in Italy center on first metatarsal osteotomy, which accounts for nearly 80% of corrections. Surgeons routinely utilize the Italian-developed S.E.R.I. percutaneous method alongside Scarf and Chevron osteotomies to achieve realignment while minimizing scarring in JCI-accredited facilities.

  • S.E.R.I. technique: Minimally invasive approach requiring only 1-cm incisions for bone realignment.
  • Scarf osteotomy: Z-shaped cut stabilized with internal screws for moderate to severe cases.
  • Chevron osteotomy: V-shaped bone cut standard for mild to moderate bunion deformities.
  • Lapidus procedure: Joint fusion technique reserved for severe cases or patients with hypermobility.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers, particularly IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, dominate the national landscape by performing 75% of revision surgeries. This high concentration of expertise in Northern Italy makes it the preferred hub for complex cases requiring advanced Lapidus 3D corrections.

Patient Consensus: Many patients favor Italian clinics for percutaneous techniques specifically for better cosmetic results. They emphasize that following strict weight-bearing protocols and physiotherapy is essential for successful long-term recovery.

How long will I need to stay in Italy, and what does the typical recovery timeline look like?

Hallux valgus surgery in Italy typically requires a 7 to 10 day stay for safe post-operative monitoring and stitch removal. While most patients return to light activities within 2 weeks, full recovery to normal footwear and high-impact sports generally takes 3 to 6 months.

  • Hospital stay: Most clinics provide same-day discharge or 1 night for observation.
  • Initial immobilization: Plan for non-weight-bearing or limited mobility for 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Travel safety: Surgeons recommend staying 10 days locally before flying to manage swelling.
  • Long-term recovery: Normal walking usually resumes by month 3 after consistent physiotherapy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan centers like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio handle 75% of Italy's revision orthopedic surgeries, signaling high expertise in complex cases. Data shows premium clinics in Milan often bundle daily physiotherapy into the first 10 days. This oversight significantly improves month 3 outcomes compared to self-managed recovery at home.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize staying in Italy for at least 10 days to avoid travel-induced swelling. Many recommend using an airboot for 4 weeks and icing religiously to speed up the transition to normal shoes.

Will I have visible scars, and how can Italian clinics minimize them?

Italian hallux valgus surgery minimizes visible scarring through percutaneous and minimally invasive techniques (MIS). These methods use 3–5 mm incisions that leave tiny, dot-like marks. While scars typically fade over 1–2 years, strategic placement and advanced closure methods ensure they blend naturally with skin.

  • Minimal incisions: Surgeons use percutaneous methods creating tiny 3–5 mm access points instead of long cuts.
  • Suture alternatives: Clinics like La Madonnina utilize medical glue or Steri-strips to avoid visible stitch marks.
  • Strategic placement: Incisions follow Langer’s lines or natural foot folds to ensure scars flatten quickly.
  • Scar management: Post-op protocols include silicone therapy and aggressive massage starting from week 4.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan’s top orthopedic centers, such as IRCCS Galeazzi, manage 75% of Italy's complex revisions. This high volume means surgeons are exceptionally skilled at reopening previous incision sites. They can often improve the appearance of old scars during your new bunion correction.

Patient Consensus: Expect some redness for 6–12 months and plan to avoid open-toe shoes for 1 year. Patients strongly recommend avoiding sun exposure for 18 months to prevent scars from darkening permanently.

What should I bring and how do I prepare for surgery in Italy?

Preparation for hallux valgus surgery in Italy requires gathering essential identity documents, recent orthopedic imaging, and physical mobility aids. Patients must follow strict hygiene protocols, including antibacterial showers and fasting from midnight, while ensuring postoperative logistical support for the initial recovery phase in Italian clinics.

  • Documentation: Bring your passport, national ID, and EHIC for EU residents or private insurance.
  • Medical gear: Pack a wedge elevation pillow, ice packs, and non-slip socks for safe mobility.
  • Clothing: Wear wide-leg pants or shorts to accommodate large postoperative casts or medical boots.
  • Medication: Discontinue NSAIDs 7 days prior to surgery to minimize bleeding risks during recovery.
  • Post-op help: Finalize discharge transport and home assistance for 1–2 weeks of non-weight-bearing recovery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While regional ankle blocks often make the first 24 hours pain-free, Italian facilities like IRCCS Galeazzi specialize in complex revision cases. This expertise is vital for bunion corrections where traditional methods failed elsewhere. Always confirm if your clinic provides crutches, as some Italian hospitals expect patients to arrive with their own mobility equipment.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize bringing a reacher tool and slip-on footwear like Crocs. Many noted that Italian doctors favor moderate pain management, so discussing a clear analgesic plan before discharge is essential for comfort.

Where are the most experienced centers for hallux valgus surgery located in Italy?

Italy hosts world-class orthopedic centers in Milan, Rome, and Bologna, specializing in minimally invasive and robotic hallux valgus surgery. Key facilities like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio and Maria Cecilia Hospital utilize advanced technology to correct foot deformities with high success rates.

  • Ospedale Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio: Italy's top-ranked orthopedic hospital performing 5,000 annual operations.
  • Maria Cecilia Hospital: JCI-accredited facility in Bologna recognized for advanced orthopedic treatments.
  • Ospedale San Carlo: Rome-based hub specializing in percutaneous minimally invasive hallux correction.
  • San Donato Hospital: Milanese center leading in minimally invasive orthopedic and cardiac care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan has a unique concentration of orthopedic volume. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio treats over 343,500 patients annually and handles 75% of Italy's revision surgeries. This high patient volume ensures surgeons manage more complex cases than typical general hospitals. Choosing Galeazzi often provides access to surgeons who specialize exclusively in recurrent or difficult foot deformities.
