Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Reconstruction of foot joints and toes in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What conditions are treated with foot-joint and toe reconstructive surgery in Italy?

Italian orthopedic centers treat various structural foot conditions, including hallux valgus (bunions), hammer toes, and hallux rigidus. Specialist clinics in Milan also manage complex pathologies like Charcot foot, chronic ankle instability, and post-traumatic fracture malunions using minimally invasive or percutaneous surgical techniques.

  • Forefoot deformities: Surgeons correct big toe alignment, stiff joints, and abnormal toe bending.
  • Midfoot stabilization: Advanced techniques restore arches in flat feet and stabilize diabetic Charcot foot.
  • Trauma recovery: Specialists repair bones and ligaments damaged by sports injuries or major accidents.
  • Rheumatoid management: Realignment procedures address joint destruction and inflammatory deformities caused by autoimmune conditions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan has become a global hub for complex revisions. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of all revision orthopedic surgeries in Italy. This high concentration of complex cases means their surgeons have unique experience in fixing failed previous operations.

Patient Consensus: Many patients seek surgery after conservative treatments like orthotics fail to provide relief. They emphasize the importance of starting physical therapy early to prevent post-operative toe stiffness.

What is the typical recovery timeline after outpatient foot reconstruction?

Typical recovery after outpatient foot reconstruction requires 6 to 12 weeks for basic mobility and 3 to 6 months for full activity. Patients generally achieve maximum recovery within 12 months as swelling resolves and bone tissues fully heal following procedures at specialized centers like Milan’s IRCCS Galeazzi.

  • Immediate phase: Elevate the foot above heart level for 14 days to manage swelling.
  • Mobility restriction: Maintain strict non-weight-bearing for 2 to 6 weeks using a scooter.
  • Transition period: Move to a walking boot and start physical therapy around week 6.
  • Work return: Resume desk work within 2 weeks or standing roles after 3 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a high-volume facility significantly impacts recovery stability. IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi in Milan performs 75% of Italy's complex revision orthopedic surgeries. Their massive patient volume—over 340,000 annually—ensures surgeons specialize in technical fusions that minimize long-term gait complications and speed up the transition to standard footwear.

Patient Consensus: Successful recovery depends on aggressive swelling control and pre-arranging a knee scooter for home use. Many patients suggest requesting an English-speaking physiotherapist in Italy to ensure rehabilitation exercises start correctly on day one.

Which clinics are considered leaders for foot-joint and toe reconstruction in Italy?

Italy serves as a premier destination for foot and toe reconstruction, with Milan-based institutions like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio and La Madonnina Clinic leading the field. These facilities feature surgeons specializing in minimally invasive techniques and complex orthopedic revisions for international patients.

  • IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi: Handles 75% of Italy's revision orthopedic surgeries with specialized foot units.
  • La Madonnina Clinic: Offers premium-class reconstructive care as part of Italy's largest medical network.
  • Surgical success rates: Top-tier Milanese clinics report a 91% success rate for complex joint procedures.
  • Specialized expertise: Leading centers provide advanced stem cell therapies for natural joint and tissue repair.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio is the highest-volume center, serving over 340,000 patients annually. While smaller clinics offer personalized care, this facility’s Newsweek Top World Specialized Clinics ranking confirms it as the primary choice for complex toe and joint revisions requiring advanced research-backed protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize choosing private care in Milan to bypass long waitlists for public hospitals. Many report that minimally invasive fusions significantly reduced their recovery time compared to traditional open surgeries.

Are minimally invasive techniques available for foot and toe reconstructive surgery?

Minimally invasive foot and toe reconstruction is available in Italy through advanced arthroscopic and endoscopic techniques. Surgeons utilize incisions smaller than 5 mm and specialized tools to correct bunions or hammer toes. These methods reduce soft tissue damage and often lower pain compared to open restorative surgery.

  • Available techniques: Surgeons use arthroscopy and endoscopy for joint realignment and bone debridement.
  • Common indications: Keyhole procedures effectively treat hallux valgus, hammer toes, and painful metatarsalgia.
  • Institutional settings: Advanced private centers in Milan specialize in these techniques over public hospitals.
  • Diagnostic requirements: Pre-operative CT scans are mandatory in Italy to confirm patient surgical candidacy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio in Milan handles 75% of Italy's orthopedic revisions. This massive volume suggests that even complex MIS failures are redirected here for expert correction. Patients should target clinics within the San Donato Network for the highest success rates in specialized foot reconstructions.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that private centers in Milan offer faster recovery for high-heel compatibility after toe realignment. Many emphasize that post-operative physical therapy impacts long-term mobility more than the initial incision size.

How long should medical tourists plan to stay in Italy for initial recovery?

Medical tourists should plan a 21 to 28 day stay in Italy for foot joint reconstruction. This timeframe includes pre-operative tests and a 14-day post-surgical recovery period for stitch removal. It ensures stability for non-weight-bearing mobility before safe air travel and long-haul flights.

  • Hospital monitoring: Inpatient care typically lasts 2 to 5 days for pain management.
  • Surgical follow-up: Surgeons remove stitches between day 10 and day 14 post-procedure.
  • Thrombosis prevention: Experts recommend waiting 14 days before flying to minimize DVT risks.
  • Mobility planning: Patients often require crutches or a walking boot for 2-4 weeks.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan centers like IRCCS Galeazzi specialize in complex revision surgeries and handle 75% of Italy's orthopedic revisions. While prices for foot reconstruction range from $8,500 to $14,000, the medical expertise is elite. For recovery, avoid relying on Italian public transit while using crutches. Arrange private transfers and wheelchair assistance for the airport well in advance of your departure.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that staying at least 18 days is necessary for swelling to subside. They recommend booking business class for the flight home to keep the foot elevated and prevent complications.

Is formal physical therapy required after foot reconstruction?

Formal physical therapy is usually required after major foot reconstruction to ensure successful long-term outcomes. While minor procedures may only need at-home exercises, complex joint and toe reconstructions in Italy typically follow structured rehabilitation protocols. This professional guidance helps restore natural walking patterns and prevents permanent joint stiffness.

  • Gait normalization: Therapists rebuild natural walking patterns to prevent future hip or knee pain.
  • Muscle recovery: Structured programs reverse the 25% calf muscle loss common after immobilization.
  • Manual mobilization: Professionals use targeted stretching to restore flexibility in recently reconstructed joints.
  • Safety monitoring: Guided sessions ensure patients do not apply weight too early or incorrectly.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized facility like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio offers a distinct recovery advantage. As the clinic performing 75% of Italy's revision surgeries, their rehabilitation protocols are refined by an massive volume of complex cases. This deep institutional experience often results in more nuanced physical therapy plans compared to general maternity or multi-specialty hospitals.

When can patients expect to drive again after foot or toe reconstruction?

Patients typically resume driving 6 to 9 weeks after foot or toe reconstruction. Recovery depends on the surgical site and vehicle type. Right foot procedures require longer delays for braking safety, while left foot surgery in automatic cars may allow a return within 2 weeks.

  • Right foot surgery: Requires 6 to 9 weeks for bone healing and safe brake reaction times.
  • Left foot surgery: Patients driving automatic vehicles may return to driving in 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Manual transmissions: Driving either foot requires the full recovery period to allow for clutch use.
  • Safety requirements: You must be off opioid pain medication and able to perform emergency stops.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers like Galeazzi Sant-Ambrogio perform 75% of the country's revision surgeries. This high volume suggests that complex reconstructions often require specialized Italian clinics. Choosing a facility with IRCCS accreditation ensures access to advanced rehabilitation protocols that can help meet driving milestones faster.

Patient Consensus: Most patients find that big toe fusions demand a full 12 weeks of recovery before driving safely. Walking unaided and maintaining a pain-free range of pedal motion are the most common benchmarks for clearance.
