Trustworthy, reassuring and all round lovely Dr and person About the Doctor: Trustworthy, reassuring and all round lovely Dr and person About the Clinic: Yes - overall support was brilliant
Trustworthy, reassuring and all round lovely Dr and person Thank you - excited be able to enjoy life again! Yes - overall support was brilliant. Fouad from Bookimed was so patient with me and so helpful, and not sure Teresa ever sleeps. Thank you both! However due to timing I think the initial 24 hours I assume would be better usually, but it is holiday season - I think better expectation setting there and having someone on hand at departure who could inform me of the steps and answer my questions - but despite this I am sure the follow up for me in that short window would not being the usual experience as otherwise the support was amazing and I was given time during holidays by Dr G which I value and appreciate - it is an important time of the process though so I would recommend having someone like Mercedes on hand! It’s scary seeing yourself after surgery and I was left feeling very unaware for nearly 48 hours! I do want to highlight that everyone in the hospital was great and professional the two nurses who looked after me directly after the surgery were so lovely and obviously all involved in the surgery and end to end treatment - but extra special thanks to you Mercedes - a really special human and very valuable member and representative of the organisation and hospital! Thank you

There was only one seal, so I advise you to make the documents more official, so that you would not be so scared to pay for the consultation
Passed online consultation. After the consultation, a treatment plan was created, which we will undergo, further consultations will continue. Online consultation is very convenient and of course there were some doubts, especially when the invoice was billed, because it was a bit confusing, there was only one seal, so I advise you to make the documents more official, so that you would not be so scared to pay for the consultation.

FAQ about Reconstructive surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How do I ensure a surgeon in Spain is qualified?

To verify a surgeon in Spain, confirm they are registered with the regional Colegio Oficial de Médicos and the national Spanish Society of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (SECPRE). High-tier clinics like Centro Médico Teknon or Hospital Ruber Internacional maintain JCI accreditation and employ board-certified specialists.

  • Collegiate registration: Verify the physician membership number through the Organización Médica Colegial registration database.
  • Specialty certification: Confirm the surgeon completed the 5-year MIR residency for Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.
  • Hospital accreditation: Select facilities with Joint Commission International (JCI) or ISO 9001 quality certifications.
  • Clinical experience: Prioritize surgeons like Dr. Javier Herrero Jover who have performed 10,000+ procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many surgeons focus on aesthetics, top-tier Spanish specialists often lead hospital-based units dedicated to complex microsurgery. For example, some clinics offer 3D surgical planning and DIEP flap reconstruction, which require more advanced hospital infrastructure than standard cosmetic centers. Look for clinicians who hold memberships in international bodies like ISCAS or EBOPRAS as a sign of global expertise.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize checking for reconstructive-specific portfolios rather than just cosmetic results. They recommend verifying that the surgeon practiced in a major hospital setting to ensure safety for complex repairs.

Are the clinics safe?

Reconstructive surgery clinics in Spain are exceptionally safe, governed by strict European Union medical standards and national regulations. High-tier facilities maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and employ surgeons certified by the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE), ensuring world-class surgical safety.

  • Regulatory oversight: Clinics must meet rigorous health department licensing and European Union safety protocols.
  • Surgeon credentials: Top specialists like Dr. Javier Herrero Jover have performed over 10,000 successful procedures.
  • Advanced technology: Facilities utilize 3D surgical planning and microsurgical techniques for high-precision reconstructions.
  • Hospital standards: Leading centers like Centro Médico Teknon rank among the World's Best Hospitals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s safety profile is unique because its private hospitals, such as Clinica Universidad de Navarra, integrate academic research with clinical practice. This dual focus often leads to higher success rates in complex microsurgery, as these institutions are the first to adopt AI-driven diagnostic tools and robotic assistance before they become global standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients value Spain as a trusted, serious destination with stricter ethical standards than many budget hubs. Most recommend verifying Spanish Board certifications and planning a 2-week stay to ensure stable recovery.

What are the most common reconstructive surgeries performed in Spain?

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is the most common reconstructive surgery in Spain, followed by skin cancer repairs and trauma-related orthopedic restoration. High incidence rates of breast and skin cancer drive these procedures, often utilizing advanced microsurgery and 3D surgical planning at JCI-accredited centers in Barcelona and Madrid.

  • Oncological reconstruction: Advanced DIEP flap procedures use autologous tissue for natural post-mastectomy results.
  • Skin cancer repair: Local flaps and skin grafts address defects following melanoma or tumor removal.
  • Trauma and orthopedics: Specialized units repair severe fractures and soft-tissue injuries using microsurgical techniques.
  • Congenital corrections: Pediatric specialists perform cleft lip, craniofacial, and microtia repairs across major hospitals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s leadership in reconstructive surgery is rooted in its high surgical volume, with centers like Centro Médico Teknon serving 10,000 patients annually. Elite athletes frequently choose Spanish surgeons for complex orthopedic reconstructions. This high-level expertise in trauma repair directly cross-pollinates with their oncology departments, leading to superior functional outcomes in restorative surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the cultural preference for subtle, natural results and report that reconstructive interventions for medical necessity are seamlessly handled within the healthcare system.

What is the process for an international patient?

International patients follow a structured process involving record submission through secure portals, virtual consultations, and coordinated logistics. Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon or Hospital Quiron Barcelona provide dedicated coordinators to manage medical reviews, financial arrangements, and travel support before arrival.

  • Medical documentation: Patients must upload radiology reports and pathology records for doctor evaluation.
  • Virtual coordination: Surgeons use Zoom consultations to discuss 3D planning and personalized treatment.
  • Safety protocols: Major surgeries require staying in-country 7–21 days to prevent travel-related blood clots.
  • Language support: Accredited facilities provide medical interpreters to ensure clear communication during treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain ranks 4th globally for patient requests, largely due to its high medical standards. While costs are higher than in Turkey, centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional offer JCI-accredited care. Patients often choose Spain for its strong legal protections and elite technologies like 3D surgical navigation.

Patient Consensus: Travelers emphasize that private clinics are the only route, as public systems are inaccessible. Most recommend staying several days post-op to ensure a safe flight home.

What is the recommended stay in Spain for surgery?

A reconstructive surgery stay in Spain typically requires 12 to 14 days for initial recovery and essential wound management. Complex procedures may necessitate up to 31 days. Most patients spend 2 nights in JCI-accredited facilities like Centro Médico Teknon before transitioning to local outpatient care.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 2 nights for monitoring after major reconstructive or microsurgical procedures.
  • Wound management: Daily nursing care is recommended for 12 to 14 days post-surgery.
  • Complex cases: Patients undergoing thigh lifts or DIEP flap reconstruction should plan 30 days.
  • Air travel: Surgeons advise staying 14 days total to ensure stability before flying home.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional utilize 3D navigation and microsurgery to reduce physical trauma. Data shows these technologies often shorten hospital stays to 2 nights. This allows patients to move to more affordable local accommodations for the remaining 12 days of recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize prioritizing rest over tourism during the first 14 days. Many recommend staying an extra week beyond the minimum to manage scarring and ensure safe air travel.

Will my insurance cover reconstructive surgery in Spain?

Insurance coverage for reconstructive surgery in Spain depends on medical necessity and specific international policy clauses. While insurers often cover procedures following trauma or cancer, most standard plans exclude surgeries outside of your home country without prior written authorization or specialized international riders.

  • Medical necessity: Coverage requires documentation linking surgery to cancer, trauma, or congenital defects.
  • Policy restrictions: Standard plans typically deny elective or non-emergency procedures performed abroad.
  • Complication risks: Insurers often refuse coverage for follow-up care for surgeries done in Spain.
  • Self-pay savings: Procedures in Spain average 63% less than the $30,000 US average.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While insurance hurdles are common, Spain offers elite clinical standards for self-paying patients. Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon and Hospital Ruber Internacional hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. These centers maintain 95% success rates in complex cases like bone sarcoma preservation. If your insurer denies the claim, Spain is a top-tier alternative where you can access 3D surgical planning for significantly less than US out-of-pocket costs.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that self-paying in Spain is more affordable than US deductibles. They highly recommend getting all coverage denials in writing before seeking overseas treatment.

Do Spanish surgeons speak English?

Most Spanish surgeons in private hospitals speak English fluently due to international training and global specialization. Major clinics in Barcelona, Marbella, and Valencia explicitly provide multilingual medical staff. While surgeons are proficient, support staff like nurses or receptionists may have more limited English skills.

  • Private facility advantage: Private clinics guarantee English-speaking doctors to accommodate international medical travelers.
  • Regional hubs: Centers in Barcelona and Marbella frequently treat global patients in English.
  • Multilingual clinics: Places like Ocean Clinic support English, French, German, and Spanish speakers.
  • Medical coordinators: Accredited hospitals provide dedicated interpreters and coordinators to assist foreign patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While surgeons at top centers like Centro Médico Teknon are often pioneers in global medical technology, don't assume the entire surgical team is bilingual. Data shows that specialized clinics in tourist centers like Marbella or Valencia specifically hire multilingual staff for smoother post-operative care transitions.

Patient Consensus: Patients find that while surgeons have high training and international exposure, daily hospital operations often require translation tools. Confirming English availability for nursing staff before booking ensures a more comfortable recovery experience.
