The assistants and the doctors were great, clear explanations, details
The assistants and the doctors were great, clear explanations, details. The care from the assistant before operation and after, the next day it was great. However, the grab taxis for consultations were not very comfortable—not spacious, not comfortable, old tapestry, smell inside, which made us feel annoyed before surgery when already nervous and irritated. When we came back for post-operative checking we already made an appointment but in the end we had to wait 2 hours more from the appointed hour.

I’m feeling better than expected this early on
My main worries before the procedure were the recovery process and the final look of the scars. My surgeon was very direct about both, clearly explaining the realistic results, the swelling timeline, and exactly where the incisions for my full neck lift would be placed behind the ears. This honesty was appreciated. The procedure was done under general anesthesia, and I’m feeling better than expected this early on. The clinic’s support has been solid; they gave me a clear aftercare guide and have been easy to reach with questions. It was also a relief that there were no additional expenses on top of the quoted price.

The clinic staff were competent, and the surgeon was clear in our consultations
Waking up, I felt groggy but managed. The clinic staff were competent, and the surgeon was clear in our consultations. The incision was placed under the breast, which is what I wanted. I am still in the early recovery phase, and it has its challenges. My pain has lessened to a mild discomfort, but sleeping through the night is difficult, and my nipples are uncomfortably hypersensitive. Overall, the medical care was solid, though the recovery process itself is demanding. It’s a serious undertaking.

Despite the discomfort, the clinic, the staff, and my surgeon were all fantastic and provided great care
Monsplaty, Tummy Tuck and 360 Liposuction. My biggest concern going into this was what the recovery would actually feel like. It's not easy. The most challenging part has definitely been the constant tight feeling, which is something to be prepared for. My surgeon used a combination of liposuction and excision. Right now there is still some swelling, so it’s too early to know how my clothes will fit differently in the end. Despite the discomfort, the clinic, the staff, and my surgeon were all fantastic and provided great care. It was a professional and supportive environment, and I'm glad I made the choice to go there.
Very clean, very inviting. After care was good too. Everything was quick and easy. Communication via whatsapp made things easier as well. I travelled solo and the staff helped that little extra.
After surgery garments are not forgiving for us longer torso people. They were a bit short which added a lil discomfort when it rolled at the back. Other than that everything was really good.

Even at just 15 days post-op, the initial aspect is already better than expected
Seeing the surgical site for the first time was the moment everything finally felt real. Even at just 15 days post-op, the initial aspect is already better than expected. We used the penile inversion technique, and while the results look promising, the recovery requires a lot of patience and steady commitment to the healing process. My biggest challenge at this stage is definitely the physical discomfort of being seated for a long time. It is a process. The clinic staff has been very attentive during my stay, and I am expecting to have the catheter removed very soon. To anyone else preparing for this surgery, it’s not easy but it is a good experience overall.

The staff deserves a special mention for being so supportive
One of my biggest worries was the potential for hidden costs, but I was relieved to find there were no additional expenses on top of what the clinic quoted. The staff deserves a special mention for being so supportive. They've stayed in touch and have been very easy to reach, which is reassuring during recovery from my traditional liposuction on two areas. What stood out about my surgeon was how carefully he marked the areas before we went into the operating room. My recovery is going about as expected so far. The whole process was handled professionally.

Just trust them
What really stood out was sitting with my doctor before the procedure to draw the beard shape together. That personal approach made a huge difference. Honestly, so far I'm feeling better than expected. The procedure was done using the FUE technique. The clinic’s support afterward has been great; they provided a clear aftercare guide and have stayed in touch with me. It was also a relief that there were no additional expenses on top of what I had paid. My advice for a future patient? Just trust them. They know what they are doing!
Excellent staff. Really took care of me. Wjile the full effects of my procedure will take several months to show. I'm very pleased so far of the outcome. They are very accommodating and generous with their time
Some language issues but some of the staff speak English well enough that it really isn't a problem

What truly stood out was my surgeon, who was honest about realistic results from the start and personally handled both the consultation and the surgery
I was thinking that going into a revision was getting unrealistic promises. What truly stood out was my surgeon, who was honest about realistic results from the start and personally handled both the consultation and the surgery. It gave me confidence. My alarplasty was done to correct an asymmetric nose, and while I'm still in the early stages of healing, it’s really too early to tell what the final outcome will be. The staff were supportive, providing a clear aftercare guide for my recovery at home. I also appreciated that there were no additional expenses on top of what I had already paid the clinic.

the care provided by the surgeon and the staff was impeccable
My one-off operation went very well and the care provided by the surgeon and the staff was impeccable, apart from a few minor language issues. However, you should be prepared for a few additional costs that were not included in the original price: we had to pay for the transfers between the hotel and the clinic ourselves, and the wound care supplies were insufficient, which amounted to a mid-double-digit sum in total. My most important tip for future patients would be to make absolutely sure you clarify any dietary requirements (vegetarian/halal/...) with the clinic before you arrive.
The coordination team is very dedicated and always available. The staff are consistently very friendly and go out of their way to help. A very comprehensive package with extensive, thorough preliminary examinations and no hidden costs. A superbly equipped single room, including a sofa bed for an accompanying person.
Contrary to what was advertised, there was no interpreter. The nursing staff, in particular, did not always have a good enough command of English to explain everything clearly and in detail. The consultation with the surgeon was less detailed than expected. It wasn’t always entirely clear which services were included in the package and which weren’t (particularly transfers) – but there were no major hidden costs. Hospital food/light meals after operations are always a challenge, and perhaps even more so in a different cultural context – I wasn’t asked about any specific dietary preferences, so anyone who absolutely needs vegetarian, vegan, kosher or halal food should definitely clarify this in advance; in my opinion, the hospital bed was very hard, which is significantly more uncomfortable when you can’t move around much

I'm confident in my choice and would recommend this clinic
My biggest worry was how the results would actually look and feel afterward. Now that I'm in the early stages of recovery from the fat transfer graft, I can say the outcome is positive. The girth is already noticeably thicker. Everything is still slightly numb, as expected, but the visual change is definitely there. The surgeon and the entire staff were professional and clear with all information, which helped manage my concerns from the beginning. It's a relief. Based on the care I received and the initial results, I'm confident in my choice and would recommend this clinic.

The most reassuring part of the whole process was sitting with the surgeon before we started
The most reassuring part of the whole process was sitting with the surgeon before we started. He took the time to draw the hairline with me and clearly explained the entire FUE extraction and implantation process, which helped manage my expectations for the 2,000-3,000 graft procedure. Now in the early stages of healing, I'm feeling about as expected. The clinic has stayed in touch, which is good. Overall, it was a solid experience with the surgeon and staff, and I appreciated that there were no additional expenses on top of what I was quoted.

The entire staff and my surgeon were great and supportive through it all
My biggest fear was the recovery, and it’s certainly a process that requires patience. The entire staff and my surgeon were great and supportive through it all. Right now, my chin is still very swollen, so I can't properly see the projection from the large, solid silicone implant yet. The numbness has been the hardest part. My lower lip feels slightly numb, which has made eating the biggest challenge so far. It’s a strange sensation. Despite the temporary side effects of healing, the care I received was solid and I would recommend this clinic.

My breathing is now even better than before
My biggest concern was that the result might look unnatural or that my breathing might be affected. Neither of these things happened. In fact, my breathing is now even better than before. During the open rhinoplasty, a small bump was removed and the bridge of my nose is now, even so soon after the procedure, already straighter, just as I wanted. In addition, the tip of my nose already looks much more defined. The staff and the surgeon were consistently supportive and answered all my questions patiently, which gave me a great deal of reassurance. I felt I was in good hands.

The surgeon and the whole medical team have been absolutely brilliant
I was really worried about the recovery period, and the truth is it hasn’t been as easy as I expected. My stomach is still swollen, and the compression garments are still tight, but the hardest part so far has been dealing with the annoying numb patches. That said, the surgeon and the whole medical team have been absolutely brilliant. The doctor explained to me that he used ultrasound technology (VASER) and removed between 3 and 4 litres of fat, and I felt I was in safe hands with them. Unfortunately, the clinic’s facilities weren’t up to the same standard as the quality of medical care, which is why I’ve given it a lower rating. Overall, I’m optimistic about the final result.
The medical and nursing staff are truly exceptional
The clinic generally needs more space

FAQ about Skin Grafting in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main risks associated with skin grafting?

Skin grafting risks include graft failure, infection, and permanent sensation changes. Success depends on the new blood supply forming without interruption from fluid buildup or excessive movement. Patients may also experience skin contracture, visible scarring, or pigmentation mismatches between the donor and recipient sites.

  • Graft failure: Occurs in 10-30% of cases when tissue fails to bond or survive.
  • Infection risk: Major concern at both sites, sometimes requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment or surgery.
  • Sensory changes: Permanent numbness, itching, or neuropathic pain affects 20-40% of grafting patients.
  • Mobility issues: Skin contracture around joints can restrict movement, especially without intensive physical therapy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data suggests split-thickness grafts generally show lower failure rates than full-thickness options for large areas. In Thailand, high heat and humidity can increase infection risks or disrupt the graft take. International patients should prioritize surgeons like Dr Phatcharasak Kraisornphongsakul, who has performed 20,000+ procedures, to ensure expert handling of these specific environmental variables.

Patient Consensus: Many patients report that donor site healing is often more painful than the graft itself. They strongly advise staying locally for 4-6 weeks to ensure proper monitoring before flying home.

Which are the best hospitals for skin grafting in Thailand?

Thailand's top hospitals for skin grafting include JCI-accredited facilities like Bumrungrad International, Bangkok Hospital, and specialized centers like Wansiri Hospital. These institutions offer advanced reconstructive techniques for burns, trauma, and scar revision, with procedures starting from $2,800 to $2,800.

  • Bumrungrad International: Specializes in full-thickness grafts at their Holistic Wound Care Center.
  • Bangkok Hospital: Features a dedicated reconstruction center focused on facial trauma recovery.
  • Wansiri Hospital: Reports high success rates in complex aesthetic and reconstructive grafting.
  • Yanhee Hospital: Recognized for treating complex burn cases using advanced flap techniques.
  • Industrial expertise: Surgeons like Dr. Phatcharasak Kraisornphongsakul have performed 20,000+ plastic procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While large multi-specialty hospitals offer ICU backup for major trauma, specialized clinics like ID Clinic Bangkok provide high-volume expertise. Surgeons there often have experience in tens of thousands of procedures. For elective grafting like acne scar revision, these specialized centers offer more competitive rates than university hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that surgeon experience with over 100 graft cases is more critical than the facility name. Many recommend virtual consultations to discuss donor site management and suggest budgeting for potential follow-up corrections.

How long is the recovery period and stay in Thailand after skin grafting?

Recovery after skin grafting in Thailand typically requires 7 to 14 days in the country before patients are cleared to fly. Hospitalization varies by graft type, with split-thickness grafts requiring a few days and full-thickness grafts often necessitating up to 2 weeks for successful integration.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 3-7 nights depending on the graft size and location.
  • Initial healing: The most sensitive phase occurs during the first 1-2 weeks.
  • Donor site recovery: Re-epithelialization of the donor area usually completes within 2-3 weeks.
  • Activity resumption: Patients typically return to non-physical work after 3 weeks of recovery.
  • Total maturation: Scars continue to fade and soften for 6 to 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai surgeons often recommend longer on-ground monitoring than Western clinics to ensure 95% graft take. Staying 21 days for facial grafts is common among high-volume providers like Yanhee International Hospital. This conservative approach helps prevent graft failure caused by cabin pressure changes during early flights.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that extending their stay to 3 weeks provides peace of mind. They highlight the value of having Thai nurses perform daily wound care during the first 10 days.

What types of skin grafts are available and when are they used?

Skin grafts include split-thickness (STSG), full-thickness (FTSG), and composite types, categorized by the depth of tissue used. Surgeons select STSGs for large areas like burns, while FTSGs provide superior cosmetic results for visible regions like the face. Composite grafts reconstruct complex structures like ears.

  • Split-thickness grafts: Use epidermis and partial dermis for large wounds or major burns.
  • Full-thickness grafts: Include the entire dermal layer for better durability on hands or face.
  • Composite grafting: Combines skin with cartilage or fat for structural nose or ear repair.
  • Source varieties: Autografts use your own skin, while allografts provide temporary biological wound covering.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai surgeons often recommend split-thickness grafts for international patients because the donor site heals within 14 days. This timeline allows travelers to fly home safely. Dr Phatcharasak Kraisornphongsakul at ID Clinic Bangkok has performed 20,000 procedures, highlighting the high clinical expertise available.

Patient Consensus: Many patients find that the donor site, often the thigh, feels more painful than the graft itself. They recommend starting moisturizing on day 1 and planning a 14-day stay for monitoring.

What are the potential risks or complications of skin graft surgery in Thailand?

Skin graft surgery in Thailand involves standard risks like graft failure, infection, and haematoma. Specialist surgeons in Bangkok manage these through techniques like PRP and exosome therapy. Success depends on the graft developing a blood supply. Fluid or movement must not disrupt this during initial healing.

  • Graft failure: The transplanted skin fails to bond, often due to poor blood supply.
  • Infection risks: Tropical humidity and travel increase contamination risks at donor and graft sites.
  • Fluid collection: Seroma or haematoma under the graft can prevent the skin from taking.
  • Contracture issues: Grafted skin may shrink or pull, causing reduced mobility or uneven texture.
  • Long-haul travel: Extended flights increase risks of DVT and strain the sensitive surgical site.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While standard grafting costs $2,800, leading Thai centres like STC Clinic frequently use regenerative therapies. Adding mesenchymal stem cells or growth factor solutions helps speed up vascularisation. This reduces the risk of partial graft failure for international patients facing a long flight home.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand find that strict immobilisation and professional dressing care are vital. Most recommend staying in Bangkok longer than planned. This helps the graft fully adhere before flying back to Australia.

What should I consider before travelling to Thailand for skin grafting surgery?

Patients should prioritse surgeon experience with reconstructive cases. They should also verify clinic accreditations when planning skin grafting in Thailand. Specialists in Bangkok perform complex procedures for burns and scars. They use surgical grafts or regenerative therapies. Careful recovery planning is essential to manage wound care and identify travel-related complications.

  • Surgeon credentials: Verify certificates from the Medical Council of Thailand or the Royal College of Surgeons.
  • Clinical facilities: Accredited hospitals like Yanhee International Hospital offer comprehensive reconstructive and plastic surgery services.
  • Technique options: Surgeons perform split-thickness or full-thickness grafts. They may also use adjuncts like mesenchymal stem cell therapy.
  • Flight safety: Flying increases deep vein thrombosis risk. Patients need medical clearance before travelling.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows Thai clinics like STC Clinic now combine surgical grafting with regenerative medicine. Using umbilical cord-derived stem cells or platelet-rich plasma can improve tissue repair and graft integration. This approach is why Thailand remains a global rank 3 destination for this procedure.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand suggest choosing surgeons who specialise in reconstructive work. They recommend staying longer for repeated dressing checks. They also suggest obtaining detailed discharge instructions for Australian GPs.

What happens if I decide not to undergo a medically necessary skin graft in Thailand?

Choosing against a medically necessary skin graft leads to long healing times and infection risks. Without a graft, exposed tissue is vulnerable to tropical bacteria. This can cause heavy scarring and loss of mobility near joints. Such complications may also prevent a safe flight back to Australia.

  • Infection risk: Open wounds are highly susceptible to severe infections in tropical environments.
  • Functional loss: Skipping grafts near joints often causes contractures that limit physical movement.
  • Prolonged recovery: Natural healing requires constant dressing changes for many weeks.
  • Travel complications: Large unhealed wounds increase risks of nerve damage or thrombosis during flights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals like Yanhee International or Wansiri Hospital have surgeons who specialise in reconstruction. This includes experts like Dr Worapon Ratanalert. Delaying a graft makes future reconstruction significantly more complex. In Thailand, skin grafting costs from $2,800 to $4,400. This is roughly 37% less than the $5,700 Australian average.

Patient Consensus: Refusing a graft often leads to months of difficult wound care. It can also cause less predictable cosmetic results. Patients suggest getting a written follow-up plan for an Australian GP before declining surgery.

What questions should I ask my surgeon in Thailand regarding skin grafts?

Patients should ask about the graft type and the donor site location. It is also important to ask how the clinic manages graft failure or infection. Confirm the surgeon's experience with similar wounds. Before returning to Australia, get a written aftercare plan for wound dressings and follow-up schedules.

  • Surgical technique: Ask if a split-thickness or full-thickness graft is best for the wound.
  • Donor site: Confirm where skin is harvested and how that site is managed.
  • Success protocols: Discuss the steps taken if the skin graft does not take.
  • Follow-up care: Verify how many dressing changes and check-ups occur before flying home.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai specialists often use regenerative therapies to improve skin repair. For instance, STC Clinic in Bangkok uses growth factor solutions and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to support healing. Australian patients should ask if these treatments are included to help the graft take.

Patient Consensus: Requesting photos of healed cases helps set realistic expectations for scarring. Ask the clinic for written instructions on showering and activity restrictions before leaving Thailand.

What types of skin grafting procedures are available for patients travelling to Thailand?

Patients travelling to Thailand can access surgical skin grafting for burns and acne scars. Options include split-thickness and full-thickness grafts. Specialist plastic surgeons perform these at JCI-accredited hospitals in Bangkok. Modern clinics also offer treatments like mesenchymal stem cells and exosome therapy for tissue repair.

  • Surgical reconstruction: Plastic surgeons perform complex grafts for burns, trauma, and deep tissue defects.
  • Regenerative therapies: Clinics like STC Clinic provide umbilical cord stem cells and growth factor solutions.
  • Acne scar grafting: Targeted procedures remodel deep scarring to improve skin texture and appearance.
  • Biologic adjuncts: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and exosome therapy help speed up healing at recipient sites.
  • Specialist expertise: Surgeons like Dr Ploypailin Rattanachinnakorn hold certifications in plastic and maxillofacial surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand combines traditional reconstructive surgery with regenerative medicine. Standard grafts remain the benchmark. However, clinics now integrate exosome and stem cell therapies to improve graft "take" rates. This approach helps with complex reconstructions where blood supply is a concern.

Patient Consensus: Smaller cosmetic grafts for faces require better durability. Patients in Thailand often prefer flap reconstruction over simple grafts for deep wounds. This helps protect exposed bone and maintain reliable blood flow. Patients should confirm donor-site scarring and aftercare for dressing changes before departing.
