How Much Does Male to female (MTF) surgery Cost in Istanbul?

Male to female (MTF) surgery in Istanbul typically costs from $13,500 to $22,500. Total costs depend on the surgical technique, such as the chosen vaginoplasty method, and the extent of facial feminization. Patients save around 80% compared to the US, where this procedure costs $65,000 on average. Standard packages in Istanbul usually include hospital stays, surgeon fees, airport transfers, and hotel accommodation.

  • Vaginoplasty method: Peritoneal flap techniques typically add 20-30% compared to standard penile inversion.
  • Facial feminization: Total fees vary significantly based on the number of bone and soft tissue procedures.
  • Combination discount: Bundling surgeries like breast augmentation with bottom surgery reduces shared anesthesia and facility costs.
  • Clinic certification: Facilities with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation often command higher premiums for specialized safety protocols.

My surgeon was great; he was honest about what results were realistic for my body and clearly explained all the risks, which gave me confidence
If you're thinking about this, my main piece of advice is to be mentally ready for the procedure, as it can be overwhelming. I’m in early recovery from my breast reduction and lift, and I am feeling better than expected. My surgeon was great; he was honest about what results were realistic for my body and clearly explained all the risks, which gave me confidence. The clinic team was easy to reach and stayed in touch. Do be aware of some additional expenses – I had a prescription that cost extra at the pharmacy. A few practical tips: bring a spare compression garment, cotton t-shirts to wear underneath it, and your own snacks. Also, having my mum with me has been pivotal to my recovery, so I'd suggest bringing a companion if you can.
The co-ordinator at Bookimed, Winnington was brilliant. No matter how many questions I had he was able to answer them promptly and with one small hiccup from the hospital Winnington went out of his way to try and package a new procedure for me. My co-ordinator Eyyub at Optimed hospital was outstanding. The hospital was great, the staff on my floor were fantastic. We used goggle translate when the co-ordinator wasn’t with us if we came up against a language barrier but that was not very often. I was cared for before and after my surgery by the nursing staff who could not do enough for myself and my mum. I 10000000% recommend Bookimed & Optimed hospital
Post op instructions could be better. I have suggested to them to put together a general guide of what to do and not to do and for however long. What’s normal and if something doesn’t feel right who to contact etc. I think this will greatly help international patients and help the hospital co-ordinators from being hounded with a load of questions from several patients all at once. Peace of mind for the patient and a little more support for the co-ordinator. The food is catered for Turkish patients and can be hard for international patients to eat. Again, I have suggested to them to try having a small box of fibrous cereal available at breakfast time and instead of a full meal at lunch time something simple like sandwiches or rolls/bagels/baked goods. Dinner was usually ok and we were able to eat most of that but our daytime diet is a little less than they were providing and there was a lot of food waste which they could minimise & use the money elsewhere if there was a cater to international patients diets.

The single positive aspect of this entire process was the staff. They were wonderful. Unfortunately, my experience with the surgeon and the clinic itself was profoundly disappointing, and I'm very concerned with how my otoplasty recovery is going so far. The gap between the supportive staff and the actual medical treatment I received is hard to understand. The facility did not meet my expectations for a medical setting in any capacity. Based on this, I would absolutely not recommend this clinic to anyone considering a similar procedure.
Do not go with bookimed.com. I didn’t liked from the moment when I arrived to airport anyone wasn’t there to pick me up, you know when you arrive any place you have no internet and you can’t make any phone calls or text so night mares already start.

I breath perfectly now after surgery and my nose is a lot straighter
I felt very secure and taken care of through the entire experience. All of my inquiries were answered very promptly by both the bookiemed coordinator, the assistant, and my doctor (Dr. C Altindąg), is very experienced and talked me through what to expect and analyzed my nose very thoroughly. I breath perfectly now after surgery and my nose is a lot straighter (I had a severe deviated septum and other complications from a past surgery that he identified and corrected including a mirgrated graft and a droopy tip). I'm still quite swollen but look forward to seeing final results in a few months.

The surgeon and the clinic itself were excellent
The possibility of breathing issues was my primary concern going into this. And honestly, that has been the biggest challenge in recovery so far, with one nostril constantly feeling stuffed. My surgeon performed a closed rhinoplasty. Everything is still very swollen along the bridge, but I can already see that my nose tip appears more refined, which is a great sign. The surgeon and the clinic itself were excellent. The general staff were great, though post-op instructions could have been a bit more explicit. I'm satisfied with the medical care I received so far
Dr. Erol is an amazing doctor, his work was amazing he truly listened to my request and expectations and he was really patient and reassuring. The medical assistance team as well, they really took good care of me, they were present when i needed them.
post-op instructions could’ve been explained better

The lift in my jowls is already a dramatic improvement
My biggest worry was how the final result would look, and whether it would be worth the recovery. Even though I’m still quite puffy around my jawline, the lift in my jowls is already a dramatic improvement. That part is a huge relief. The staff and clinic environment were excellent from start to finish. Turning my head feels slightly tight but okay. The surgeon did good work, though I rated them a 4/5 as I felt some communication could have been a bit more compassionate after surgery. The most challenging part has absolutely been sleeping elevated. That's no fun. I would still recommend this clinic.
The Bookined coordinator and the Quartz Clinic staff were fantastic: supportive, helpful, compassionate. All updates were communicated to me promptly. The hotel booked for me is really excellent, with smooth transfers and kind drivers. Spot on!
I didn't give the doctor 5 stars because she made me cry the day after surgery. She could adopt a different approach towards me after surgery, with more understanding and compassion, especially since I was there on my own and at the end of the day, she's received all the information required, it doesn't matter from whom. The stress has a significant impact on me. Aside from that, she was great.

I felt in such safe hands throughout and would recommend my surgeon Dr Yunus Emre Seker and his team to anyone
I loved the coordinator / interpreter. Totally made me feel at ease and comfortable in what I would only describe as an anxious situation especially with the language barrier and the unknown of where you are going. The surgeon himself was wonderful and even had a coffee with me before hand which made me feel completely at ease. I felt in such safe hands throughout and would recommend my surgeon Dr Yunus Emre Seker and his team to anyone. Thank-you so much :)

The moment I saw the result, even with the initial swelling, I could tell the shape was exactly what I wanted
The moment I saw the result, even with the initial swelling, I could tell the shape was exactly what I wanted. It’s a great feeling. My goal was a more defined tip, and that's precisely what the surgeon delivered using an open approach. The whole process was smooth, and the staff were genuinely caring. The most difficult part of recovery so far is just having to sleep upright, which is temporary. A huge bonus is that I am breathing perfectly through my nose already. I am so grateful for the surgeon's skill and the clear communication from the team.

But the calmness and poise of the doctor and his team completely dispelled my doubts
I liked everything overall. Initially, I was very afraid, starting with the flight to another country, the transfer to the hotel and the operation itself. But the calmness and poise of the doctor and his team completely dispelled my doubts. 5 hours after the operation I returned to the hotel. Which is also very good because the hospital ward is the worst for me. Exactly after a week I took off the splint, my nose was still swollen. The nose is proportional to my face. When the swelling goes down it will be smaller

the care provided by the surgeon and all the staff was impeccable
If you’re thinking about arm liposuction, I’d advise you to prepare for the recovery. My surgeon used the VASER ultrasound technique and, although it’s still early days, my compression sleeves are already too loose. My mobility is limited; my biggest difficulty right now is reaching for things above my head. It’s also important to be patient with the results, because when I look in the mirror today, I can see that one arm looks different from the other, and I’m confident that will even out over time. Despite these minor aspects of the process, the care provided by the surgeon and all the staff was impeccable. I would recommend the clinic.

Honestly, I couldn't fault anything
If you're considering this, my coordinator stayed in touch and really held my hand through it all. The clinic itself feels like a 5-star hotel; it's very clean and modern, and the staff were attentive and nice. My surgeon, Dr. Aysel Pashazade, was professional but warm. During the consultation, she carefully examined my facial structure and was very clear in explaining where the incisions would be placed. After the surgery and discharge, the team was still there for me. I always got a response back, no matter how late it was, which showed they genuinely care about their work. The only additional expenses I had were for antibiotics and painkillers, which cost next to nothing in Turkey. Honestly, I couldn't fault anything.

Everything went more or less as planned, and it's definitely not a scam; the quoted price was the final price
If you're considering this, here's my honest take. Everything went more or less as planned, and it's definitely not a scam; the quoted price was the final price. The logistics like airport pickup and the private hospital room were handled well. The main issue was communication. I only spoke with the surgeon a few days before my flight, which caused a lot of insecurity because I couldn't get my questions answered in time. In the hospital, the translator isn't always with you. While my surgeon measured and marked me carefully for my anchor lift, the brief consultations left me concerned. It's still too early to tell about the final outcome, and I don't know how much my nipples were repositioned. Get all your questions answered long before you travel and bring two payment cards. Pack light!
Everything went more or less as planned, no big issues or problems. They picked me up at the airport, took me to the hospital where I was checked in and taken to my room after my payment. In the hospital I've received 3 meals a day, had a room with a single hospital bed, a sofa, television, wardrobe and toilet for myself. Before the surgery I had blood tests and EKG done, I've also talked to the anesthesiologist and the surgeon before the surgery for a short time, in my opinion the conversation could have been longer to answer some more question. After the surgery I was taken back to my room and received the nurses assistance for the next days. Before I went home I saw the surgeon one last time. All in all it was a good and successful experience, it's not a scam!!! The combined price stayed until the end, everything said was true.
One thing that could be better is the communication with bookimed and also the communication with the hospital. Unfortunately almost until the time of travel some of my questions were not answered and I only had the chance to talk to the surgeon per Video only a few days before surgery, which is not ideal and made me feel really insecure because I could not have my questions answered with enough time before the surgery to feel safe and secure to travel to another country with no companion. I did it anyway because I researched a lot and bookimed seemed authentic, but this was of the things that would have made me cancel the surgery. Also the same goes to the hospital, everything, the translator doesn't stay with you all the time and most of the nurses did not speak English, so there's no way of asking them what are they doing, what are they giving you, why are they taking your blood, etc. The meeting with the doctor was also very fast just a few hours before the surgery, again there was not enough time to have all my questions answered. Going to the surgery the same, the translator was there just for a few minutes, the doctors there didn't talk to me, didn't explain anything to me before giving me anesthesy or anything, they just gave it to me without even saying it and then I woke up when the surgery was over and gladly everything went fine, but that's not OK, the doctors are supposed to walk the patient through every step before surgery to pass a sense of security and calm to the patient. This part of it definitely needs improvement.

The surgeon and staff were brilliant and supportive throughout
My biggest worry was ending up with an unnatural shape, but the surgeon’s approach and clear communication completely put me at ease. Right now, things still look a little patchy as about half the transplanted hairs have fallen out, which I was told to expect during this early stage of healing. It’s a process. The biggest challenge has honestly been a personal one: just remembering to avoid touching them! The surgeon and staff were brilliant and supportive throughout. While the clinic facilities were fine, the personal care from the team made all the difference. I'm very satisfied with my choice.

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Are hospitals and clinics in Istanbul for MTF surgery safe and internationally accredited?

For male to female surgery, Istanbul hospitals are safe when they hold two certifications. Look for Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and TEMOS certification. Specialized centers like Zaren Clinic and Medical Park Göztepe operate inside Ministry of Health-approved hospitals. Their surgeons are board-certified and trained in microsurgical feminization techniques.

  • International accreditation: Facilities maintain JCI and ISO 9001:2015 standards for patient safety.
  • Surgeon credentials: Top surgeons hold European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS) certification.
  • Specialized techniques: Clinics use reconstructive microsurgery and VASER liposculpture for precise feminization.
  • Regulatory oversight: All legitimate clinics must hold an official International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While clinics market MTF services, centers like Medical Park Göztepe stand out by having surgeons like Dr. Emrah Koksal who specialize in reconstructive microsurgery. Expertise in reconstructive microsurgery is vital for complex facial feminization and tissue transfers. These procedures require more than standard aesthetic training.

Patient Consensus: Patients say safety depends on verifying the specific hospital where the surgery happens. The clinic brand alone is not enough. Patients recommend arranging clinic-led transport to navigate the city comfortably while recovering.

What is typically included in medical tourism packages for MTF surgery in Istanbul?

Medical tourism packages for male to female surgery in Istanbul typically include the surgical procedure. They also cover hospital stays in Joint Commission International-accredited facilities and pre-operative screenings. These all-inclusive bundles include 4-star or 5-star hotel accommodations and VIP airport transfers. Dedicated multilingual patient coordination helps keep logistics smooth.

  • Medical fees: Covers surgeon fees, anesthesia, and bloodwork from $13,500 to $22,500.
  • Hospitalization: Provides 1–7 nights in private rooms depending on the specific surgical technique.
  • Lodging: Includes 10–14 days in high-end hotels to support safe post-operative recovery.
  • Aftercare support: Some providers, like Dr. MED, bundle a full year of follow-up care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics offer standard packages, Zaren Clinic stands out. It maintains both Joint Commission International and ISO certifications. This dual-accreditation is rare. It shows a stronger commitment to safety. Clinics with this rigorous oversight tend to produce more reliable outcomes for complex reconstructive microsurgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients value packages that include private chauffeured transfers and translation help. These reduce travel stress. Patients advise checking if complication treatments or specific recovery medications are included. This helps avoid unexpected local expenses.

How long is the recovery time and stay required in Istanbul for MTF surgery?

MTF surgery in Istanbul requires 14 to 21 days for safe travel clearance. Most patients stay 3 to 7 nights in JCI-accredited hospitals. Then, they spend 7 to 14 days in local accommodation. Surgeons monitor wound healing and manage catheter removal before approving flights.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 3 to 7 nights under close medical supervision so your surgeon can monitor you right after surgery.
  • Local recovery: Plan to stay in Istanbul for 7 to 14 days for wound checks and follow-up appointments.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous movement for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Full healing: Tissue settles after 3 to 6 months, while internal healing takes 12 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul clinics like Zaren Clinic often provide 4- or 5-star hotel stays. These stays bridge the gap between hospital discharge and travel clearance. They are vital because patients typically need a lot of help with daily tasks for 1 to 3 weeks. Choose packages with hotel stays to have professional support nearby if complications arise early on.

Patient Consensus: The first 3 weeks are the most challenging, and you’ll often need help with all basic needs. Basic mobility returns within days. However, most patients recommend waiting 6 to 10 weeks before returning to desk work.

What procedures are included in MTF surgery in Istanbul?

MTF surgery in Istanbul includes facial feminization surgery (FFS), breast augmentation, and body feminization. Most clinics offer staged procedures rather than single sessions. Facial work often includes rhinoplasty, forehead contouring, and tracheal shaves. Body contouring uses liposuction or fat transfer to create a feminine silhouette.

  • Facial feminization: Includes forehead reduction, brow lifts, rhinoplasty, jaw contouring, and tracheal shaves.
  • Breast augmentation: Adds chest volume with silicone gel implants or fat grafting.
  • Body feminization: Focuses on narrowing the waist and enhancing the hips using VASER liposuction.
  • Genital reconstruction: Vaginoplasty and orchiectomy are available, but clinics offer them less often than FFS.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many seek all-in-one transitions, Istanbul clinics like Dr. MED and Medical Park Göztepe focus on staging surgeries. Surgeons like Dr. Emrah Koksal often separate FFS from body contouring to make the procedure safer. This staged approach typically costs $13,500 to $22,500. It offers significant value compared to the US average of $65,000.

Patient Consensus: Patients advise confirming specific inclusions beforehand, because FFS and breast work are rarely bundled automatically. Success often depends on choosing surgeons with specific experience in transgender-specific facial anatomy. This matters more than general aesthetics skill.
