This created an impression of a professional and well-prepared approach
Our son is 6 years old and has been diagnosed with ASD. We arrived at Memorial Şişli Clinic on Monday. On the same day, we had a consultation with Dr. Betül Tavil. The doctor carefully examined our son and immediately began asking questions, to which she seemed to already have some answers. This created an impression of a professional and well-prepared approach. After the consultation, the doctor recommended stem cell therapy. With our consent, the cells were ordered immediately, considering they would be delivered to the clinic within three days. On the same day, we provided four vials of blood. Three days later, the stem cell administration procedure took place. The total dose consisted of 50 million cells: 1% was administered into the spinal cord, and the remainder was given via intravenous infusion. The procedure itself lasted approximately 10–15 minutes and went smoothly. Afterward, a supportive IV drip was administered to the child. Overall, we stayed in the hospital for about 4–4.5 hours, after which we were discharged. At this point, we have observed no side effects in the child.
Prompt service, and the doctor, Betul Tavil, is very personable and I confidently say she is truly a professional in her field.
About Bookimed service
Our experience collaborating with Bookimed was very pleasant. Communication was easy and clear — our messages were always answered promptly, all issues were explained in detail, and helpful advice was provided. When necessary, Bookimed representatives contacted us by phone, which was particularly convenient and reassuring. It felt like they genuinely wanted to help us, rather than just respond formally. Thank you to the Bookimed team for your support, attentiveness, and human approach. We are left with only positive impressions.

They examined the pediatrician, the doctor is very good, but the main task was not solved, these are vaccinations for the child. Bookimed should have asked about this issue and informed that vaccinations are given only to Turkish citizens or foreigners with a residence permit

The only thing I was lucky about was the interpreter Natalia, who is really empathetic and responsible. A good anaesthesiologist. Then there is one disappointment. Someone may be lucky with the doctors in this clinic, but we expected different results.

Excellent support in the general WhatsApp chat from Hamid and in a separate chat from Saida and Alexey
We went for the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine. Excellent support in the general WhatsApp chat from Hamid and in a separate chat from Saida and Alexey. They organized a free and very convenient transfer from the airport to the clinic, for which special thanks. The transfer was on time and at the agreed place with remote support of translators. At the clinic I met Maya, who speaks Russian very well, walked us through all the procedures, including registration, and also helped us pass the PCR test (I asked for it myself). Within 3-4 hours, all information about the PCR test and vaccination correctly appeared in the HES application

No positive statements identified
the hospital facilitator did not provide all the necessary information to the hotel: 1. there were no baby cots upon arrival. we had to ask ourselves 2. we made explicit requests that we need breakfast. however the next day we were told only rooms were booked. No breakfast.
the short hospital stay
the indifferent attitude of the nurses...no smiles, no empathy, no children's meal, lunch served at 2.30pm for patients' parents

FAQ about Pediatrics in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Pediatric treatment in Turkey is safe when conducted at JCI-accredited private hospitals in Istanbul and Ankara. These facilities follow international protocols and employ English-speaking specialists. Many doctors hold fellowships from American institutions like the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins Hospital, ensuring high standards of clinical care.

  • Hospital credentials: JCI and ISO certifications ensure rigorous safety and quality management systems.
  • Expert specialists: Surgeons like Dr. Sertac Cicek hold founding roles in global pediatric societies.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics utilize pediatric-specific EEG, MRI, and genetic screening for accurate treatment plans.
  • Inclusion check: Confirm vaccination eligibility beforehand, as some immunizations may require local residency permits.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a strong correlation between high patient volumes and specialized pediatric success. Anadolu Medical Center, which serves 65,000 patients annually, maintains an official affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital. This allows Turkish surgeons to apply American clinical protocols at a significantly lower cost than in the US or Europe.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that the care is professional and well-organized, though they emphasize booking private facilities to ensure English-speaking support. One patient mentioned that bringing translated medical records and confirming hotel amenities like baby cots in advance helps avoid minor logistical stress.

Turkish pediatricians complete 6 years of university medical education followed by 4 to 5 years of specialized residency. Most practitioners hold certifications from the Turkish Ministry of Health and the Turkish Pediatric Association. Many leading specialists also possess international credentials like ECFMG or European Board certifications.

  • Education standards: Doctors follow the Bologna Process, aligning Turkish medical training with Western European standards.
  • Clinical experience: Training occurs in high-volume university hospitals, providing extensive hands-on experience with complex cases.
  • International fellowships: Many experts, such as Dr. Sertac Cicek, complete fellowships at institutions like Mayo Clinic.
  • Academic rankings: Senior pediatricians often hold Professor or Associate Professor titles with 20+ years experience.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish pediatricians often specialize in ultra-niche sub-sectors rarely found in general clinics. For instance, Dr. Makbule Eren founded a dedicated Pediatric Gastroenterology department after training at Columbia University. This level of specialization allows clinics like Memorial Sisli or Anadolu Medical Center to handle everything from genetic screenings to complex stem cell therapies in one facility.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that specialist pediatricians in Istanbul are extremely thorough during consultations and often catch details others miss. They appreciate that medical teams include dedicated translators who stay with the family through every test and procedure.

Most pediatricians at major private Turkish hospitals speak English fluently. Many specialists, such as Prof. Dr. Makbule Eren at Liv Hospital Vadistanbul, have international training in the USA and Europe. Facilities in Istanbul and Antalya frequently provide dedicated medical translators to assist during consultations.

  • Doctor credentials: Many specialists hold certifications from international bodies or fellowships at US-based hospitals.
  • Language support: JCI-accredited clinics like Memorial Şişli Hospital provide professional interpreters for international families.
  • Digital access: Some pediatricians offer preliminary assessments through messaging apps or video consultations in English.
  • Clinical staff: While doctors often speak English, administrative staff may rely on translators for coordination.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that clinics with high international volumes, such as Hisar Hospital Intercontinental which serves 250,000+ patients yearly, have the most streamlined English-speaking environments. Choosing a hospital with JCI accreditation often guarantees that medical reports and discharge summaries are available in English, which is vital for follow-up care back home.

Patient Consensus: Parents find that while younger doctors are very comfortable speaking English, having a dedicated translator like those at Medipol or ISU Gaziosmanpasa makes navigating the entire registration and testing process much less stressful.

Families should plan for a 7 to 21 day stay in Turkey for pediatric care. This timeframe covers pre-operative screenings, the procedure, and essential recovery. Complex treatments like stem cell therapy or cochlear implants typically require the full 3-week window for safe monitoring.

  • Stay duration: Typical stays range from 7 to 21 days based on the treatment complexity.
  • Surgical recovery: Plan for 2–3 days of recovery following procedures involving general anesthesia.
  • Diagnostic phase: Initial consultations and genetic screenings usually take 1–3 days to complete.
  • Therapy timelines: Stem cell sessions often require a 3-day wait for cell preparation and delivery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data suggests choosing clinics with high international patient volumes, such as Memorial Şişli or Anadolu Medical Center, can streamline your stay. These facilities often coordinate multiple specialist consultations within a single day. This efficiency can reduce your total hotel stay by up to 4 days compared to smaller clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is helpful to book flexible flights and extra hotel nights near the clinic. They often find that children need 2 additional days just to adjust to the new environment and jet lag before starting treatment.

Most pediatric treatments in Turkey require an initial evaluation before procedures begin. Expect a 1 to 2 day buffer for consultations, bloodwork, and specialist clearances. High-complexity care like stem cell therapy or surgeries always involves a multi-step assessment to ensure patient safety.

  • Initial consultation: Patients typically meet specialists like Dr. Ayse Sokullu on the arrival day.
  • Diagnostic phase: Required tests like EEG or genetic screening often take 24–48 hours.
  • Treatment planning: Consultation with creation of treatment plan costs $100 to $200.
  • Anesthesia safety: Pediatric surgeries require a separate anesthesiologist review the day before the procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from 250,000+ annual patients at Hisar Hospital suggests that while diagnostics start fast, specialized biological treatments have longer lead times. For example, at Memorial Şişli, stem cells must be ordered 3 days in advance following the initial blood draw. Always coordinate the arrival of specific medications or grafts before flying to avoid week-long delays.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that even for minor issues, clinics insist on a consult-first policy to check baseline vitals. While transfers and registration move quickly, expect the first day to be dedicated entirely to evaluations rather than the actual procedure.

What pediatric rehabilitation services are available?

Pediatric rehabilitation in Turkey provides multidisciplinary care including physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and advanced neurological interventions. Specialized centers offer Vojta therapy and innovative stem cell treatments for cerebral palsy and autism. Accredited facilities in Istanbul and Antalya integrate robotic technology with family-centered support protocols.

  • Therapeutic techniques: Clinics utilize the Vojta method and intensive neuro-rehabilitation for motor delays.
  • Neurological support: Specialists like Dr. Gulsen Kose treat complex epilepsy and neurometabolic disorders.
  • Innovative treatments: Stem cell therapy for autism and cerebral palsy is available at major centers.
  • Surgical rehabilitation: Post-operative care follows procedures like cochlear implantation or complex cardiac surgeries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from NP Istanbul Brain Hospital shows that top-tier facilities often combine psychiatric care with physical rehab. This dual approach is vital for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Highly-rated clinics typically provide on-site laboratories. This allows for faster genetic screening and EEG results, often shortening the diagnostic phase from weeks to days.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that starting with a comprehensive treatment plan is essential for progress. They suggest confirming the availability of English-speaking staff or dedicated interpreters to ensure therapeutic goals are clearly communicated during long-term sessions.

A standard pediatric check-up in Turkey includes a physical examination, growth measurement, and a pediatrician consultation. Specialists like Dr. Ayse Sokullu at Anadolu Medical Center monitor motor milestones and development. Growth tracking includes height, weight, and head circumference. Vaccination status is also reviewed during these visits.

  • Physical examination: Dr. Murat Seringec performs comprehensive head-to-toe checks and vital sign assessments.
  • Growth monitoring: Measurements include weight and height to track developmental progress against standard curves.
  • Specialized consultations: Kids check-up diagnostics cost $100 to $100 at leading Istanbul clinics.
  • Neurodevelopmental screening: Facilities like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital provide advanced brain function assessments for children.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Private clinics in Istanbul, such as Memorial Sisli, offer 45-minute consultations. This is much longer than the 15-minute standard sessions. This extra time allows doctors to discuss nutrition, sleep, and behavioral milestones in detail. Clinics with JCI accreditation often bundle these in-depth screenings into comprehensive pediatric packages.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that routine blood work isn't always standard. You should explicitly request vision and hearing screenings before your child starts school. Many patients also recommend bringing a list of developmental questions to ensure no concerns are missed during the talk.

Are pediatric surgeons in Turkey internationally accredited and experienced with international patients?

Pediatric surgeons in Turkey maintain high international standards through Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditations and specialized global training. Many lead departments at top-tier facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital. These experts frequently complete fellowships at prestigious institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Columbia University.

  • International accreditation: Hospitals like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital hold JCI and ISO certifications.
  • Expert credentials: Surgeons like Dr. Sertac Cicek have over 40 years of global experience.
  • Specialized training: Many professors completed advanced pediatric fellowships in the US and Europe.
  • Global volume: Anadolu Medical Center serves patients from 167 countries with specialized care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Turkey’s leading pediatric surgeons often hold active licenses in both Turkey and the US. For instance, Dr. Sertac Cicek is ECFMG certified and licensed in multiple US states. This dual certification ensures they follow Western clinical protocols while offering more accessible treatment timelines in Istanbul.

Patient Consensus: Parents appreciate the professional, well-prepared approach of specialists during consultations. While some note that vaccination rules for foreigners can be strict, most report smooth experiences with complex procedures like stem cell therapy and pediatric heart surgery.

Pediatric surgery in Turkey follows strict safety protocols mandated by Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO standards. Accredited hospitals use specialized WHO pediatric surgical checklists. These include verification of child-sized equipment and weight-based medication dosing. Pediatric anesthesiologists manage all sedation to ensure maximum safety for infants and children.

  • Surgical checklists: Hospitals like Anadolu Medical Center use WHO-standard pediatric checklists for every procedure.
  • Anesthesia safety: Specialists use FLACC pain scales and temperature-controlled rooms for pediatric patients.
  • Infection control: Operating theaters utilize HEPA filters and strict no-visitor rules during active surgeries.
  • Family integration: Facilities like Memorial Şişli Hospital allow parental presence during the anesthesia induction phase.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from major hubs like Istanbul shows that JCI-accredited clinics, such as Memorial and Anadolu, maintain secondary Pediatric Patient Safety Committees. These committees, which include specialists like Dr. Ayse Sokullu, perform real-time audits of pediatric outcomes. Choosing a hospital with a dedicated pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) provides an extra safety net for complex neonatal or cardiac cases.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that hospitals prioritize security by requiring mandatory ID verification and providing regular updates through apps during the surgery. Many emphasize that having an empathetic interpreter makes the pre-op process much calmer for the child.

Common pediatric surgeries in Turkey typically require stays of 1 to 3 days. Minor procedures like hernia repair or circumcision often allow same-day discharge. Complex abdominal or thoracic surgeries usually involve 48 to 72 hours of clinical observation to monitor recovery and pain management.

  • Hernia repair: Most children ages 1–5 are discharged within 24 hours after laparoscopic surgery.
  • Circumcision: Procedures typically last 4–6 hours with a follow-up check after 7 days.
  • Adenotonsillectomy: Children usually stay 1 night for observation with an ENT review at 14 days.
  • Appendectomy: Recovery for ages 5–12 generally requires 2 to 3 days of hospital stay.

Bookimed Expert Insight: JCI-accredited centers in Istanbul, such as Anadolu Medical Center and Memorial Şişli, utilize minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques. These methods significantly reduce hospital stays compared to traditional surgery. Our data shows these clinics often transition patients to virtual follow-ups via dedicated apps after the initial 7-day wound check.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that stays are often shorter than expected, making it vital to have post-op medications and recovery supplies ready at home. Most emphasize the importance of monitoring for fever during the first 48 hours after discharge.

Which Turkish cities have the largest concentration of internationally recognized children’s hospitals?

Istanbul and Ankara host the largest concentration of internationally recognized children's hospitals in Turkey. Istanbul serves as the primary medical hub. It features the highest density of Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facilities. These centers specialize in complex pediatric transplants and oncology.

  • Hospital density: Istanbul leads with major JCI-accredited centers like Memorial Şişli and Anadolu Medical Center.
  • Specialized care: Ankara hosts Hacettepe İhsan Doğramacı Children’s Hospital, a leader in rare pediatric diseases.
  • Accreditation standards: Most top-tier pediatric departments in these cities hold prestigious JCI and ISO certifications.
  • Expert availability: Istanbul attracts global experts like Dr. Betul Tavil for pediatric bone marrow transplants.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend: Istanbul clinics like Memorial Şişli and Hisar Hospital Intercontinental handle the highest international patient volumes. Memorial Şişli alone attracts families from 167 countries. For complex cases like pediatric stem cell therapy, Istanbul remains the top choice due to having the first JCI-accredited hospital in Turkey.

Patient Consensus: Parents often note that major Istanbul centers provide seamless support, including specialized translators and airport transfers. Families traveling for advanced treatments like stem cell therapy appreciate how quickly clinics coordinate everything from blood tests to procedure dates.

What does a typical pediatric surgery travel package include for medical tourists?

Typical pediatric surgery packages in Turkey include surgical fees, anesthesia, and inpatient hospital stays ranging from 3 to 7 days. These bundles often cover VIP airport transfers, local transportation, and professional translation services. Most JCI-accredited facilities also provide specialized pediatric nursing and post-operative follow-up consultations.

  • Clinical services: Bundled costs cover primary surgeons, anesthesia teams, and essential medical consumables.
  • Hospital stay: Packages typically include 3–7 days of inpatient care with specialized pediatric monitoring.
  • Logistics: VIP airport pick-up, hospital transfers, and dedicated language support are standard inclusions.
  • Follow-up care: Professional medical consultations and video call support for up to 3 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume centers like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental shows that clinics serving 250,000+ patients annually often bundle breakfast for one companion. However, families frequently pay extra for additional meals or specific pediatric items like baby cots. Always confirm these small but essential furniture and meal details before your arrival.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize checking if pediatric ICU monitoring or child psychologists are included, as these often incur extra costs. Many note that while transfers are seamless, verifying vaccination rules for international patients beforehand prevents unexpected delays.

How soon after common pediatric surgeries can my child fly?

Children can generally fly 7 to 10 days after common pediatric surgeries. Minor procedures like ear tube placement may allow travel within 24 hours. Complex abdominal or orthopedic surgeries often require 14 days. Always obtain a written fitness-to-fly certificate from your Turkish surgeon before boarding.

  • Ear tube surgery: Children can often fly 24 hours after the procedure safely.
  • Minor laparoscopy: Patients should wait 4 to 7 days before air travel.
  • Tonsillectomy recovery: A 14-day waiting period is standard to prevent bleeding risks.
  • Major abdominal surgery: Surgeons typically recommend staying grounded for 10 to 14 days.
  • Cast application: Most airlines require 24 to 48 hours after casting before flying.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from JCI-accredited centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital shows that international families often plan a 14-day stay. This period covers both the procedure and critical follow-up benchmarks. Staying near the clinic ensures immediate access to specialists if post-operative adjustments are needed before the flight home.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize booking flexible flight tickets because recovery speeds vary. Many suggest staying in Istanbul for at least 2 weeks to ensure children are fully comfortable before handling cabin pressure changes.

What type of clothing or items should I pack for a pediatric medical stay in Turkey?

Pack soft, cotton, loose-fitting clothing like button-front pajamas to accommodate medical equipment and IV lines. Turkish hospitals use intensive air conditioning, so include fleece socks and layered outfits. Bring familiar comfort items, non-slip footwear, and essential electronics with Type F power adapters to support a smooth recovery.

  • Clothing style: Use button-up tops or zip hoodies. These ease dressing during intensive medical monitoring.
  • Layering strategy: Pack long-sleeve cotton layers. Hospital interiors remain cold even during hot Turkish summers.
  • Safety footwear: Include non-slip socks or slip-on shoes. Hospital floors in Istanbul facilities are often slippery.
  • Power needs: Pack Type F adapters and 6-foot cords. Outlets in private rooms are often poorly placed.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows that top-rated centers like Anadolu Medical Center or Memorial Şişli Hospital provide high-quality care but may have strict rules on specific items. While Memorial Antalya Hospital is a top choice, patients there noted that certain services like non-emergency vaccinations are restricted to residents. Always pack a 5L bag with 3–5 outfits only, as these major clinics offer efficient laundry services that prevent the need for overpacking.

Patient Consensus: Parents emphasize bringing a favorite stuffed animal or blanket to prevent meltdowns in unfamiliar rooms. They also recommend downloading plenty of offline movies since hospital WiFi can be unreliable during long stays.
