We received a detailed consultation with Dr. Pelles Sharon and her assistant Denis. They explained everything, gave me a treatment plan, and the doctor was very attentive to details. We are very grateful for the small chance that these doctors gave us. I would also like to note the work of the coordinator, Yulia. A very sensitive, empathetic specialist, she was able to organize everything quickly. Thanks a lot!

I had a very positive experience at Anadolu Hospital in Istanbul. Everything was very well organized, and I was especially impressed by the professionalism and kindness of the assistants, the translator, and most of all, the doctors. I truly felt supported and well taken care of throughout the process. I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Meriem for her exceptional assistance — her help was truly invaluable. If I may offer one small remark, it would be that the brain MRI report was a bit limited in detail. Aside from that, everything was impeccable. I am very satisfied and grateful for the care I received. Thank you again to the entire team!

My father’s medical experience with Memorial Şişli was great. Everything was well-organized, and we felt supported throughout the entire process. The doctor was professional, knowledgeable, and patient in explaining every detail, which reassured us that my father was in good hands. I was also really impressed by how quickly everything was arranged. There were no unnecessary delays, and the entire medical service was coordinated seamlessly. Our online medical coordinator was always available whenever we had questions, making the whole process much easier. Having a interpreter readily available was a huge help as well—they were efficient and made communication effortless. The hospital was spotless, and cleanliness was clearly a top priority, which gave us even more peace of mind. Overall, we were very happy with the care my father received. The professionalism and efficiency of the entire team made a real difference, and I would highly recommend the hospital to anyone seeking quality medical care abroad.

I am extremely happy that I landed on the hands of an ENT expert , " Prof.Dr. Yavus. He knew exactly what my 25yrs old hearing loss problem was and what needed to be done and just did and corrected my hearing instantly! The medical team, from reception,/admin, translators, lab techs, surgery and docs are great, these are professionals who are properly trained. My one night hospital stay in the room after my ear surgery was a five stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 experience. Very clean and quite room, with spacious washroom with all amenities in place. You can sit and work on your laptop if you can, sit and read a book or watch out through the window if you like or just lay in your hospital bed and take naps. No pain! Everything about the room was excellent! The nurses on night duty checked me every hour or less to monitor my temperature and/blood pressure. This was angelic 👌 And then I had a soft diet in the morning to break my 24hrs fast, isn't this enough care to appreciate? Doc was happy to learn I can hear! He was successful in his work.💪💪💪 If you have an ENT problem, look out for this hospital and ask for Prof.Dr Yavuz. He shows you and explains what your problem is on a projector and tells you instantly he can correct it and does that with no pain. Was half the price I would have paid in the UK. I met an Orthopaedic surgeon too to address my knees pain. Dr. Tusuf Bayram. An expert in his office. I thought I needed an MRI but no, I explained, he examined, did an x-ray and knew what was wrong, what needs to be done and did what he could. Simple! Three GP visits with an x-ray didn't see my problem but he did. If you got similar problem, please look no further than here.😃🤞 However, I had too many coordinators from both Bookimed and Hisar hospital several.months when planning my treatment. If there is anything I would ask you to improve, kindly stick to one from bookimed and one from the hospital please. To coordinate exceedingly, you need to understand a patient's concern, interest and goal. I did not meet a Neurosurgeon I should have met as planned, because he was given an appointment to meet me on a day that I was on air travelling in the night, how could this be! He had videos of my other neural conditions and had more information about my condition beforehand than the Neurosurgeon I met a day after. And I came back unsatisfied with my neural recommendation. Attached is my pic with my ear Surgeon , five days after my surgery. Look out for him!😍

My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

Austria

High survival rates

Austria has a 63% five-year survival rate for cancer patients, and the number continues to grow.

As for specific types:

⟢ Success in difficult cases

Lung cancer is notoriously difficult to detect and treat. However, Austria has one of the best rates in Europe. With early detection, one-year survival rate for lung cancer patients has increased from 42% to 52%.

⟢ Research and innovation

Austria is active in cancer research and quickly adopts new medical treatments. It patented more than 600 cancer-related innovations over the past 20 years. Some of the notable achievements include:

  • Faster and safer radiation therapy. Thanks to new radiation techniques, breast cancer patients in Austria now need just 5 sessions instead of 25-30. Methods like partial breast irradiation target only the tumor and don’t damage healthy tissue.
  • Blood cancer prediction tools. Austrian researchers have developed a prediction tool for blood cancer therapies. They help doctors assess which treatments will work best for individual patients with leukemia or lymphoma.
  • Immunotherapy. Austrian scientists are making major strides in using the body’s immune system to fight cancer. One breakthrough treatment for neuroblastoma is already available, and new therapies for solid tumors are in development. Start-ups are designing viruses that destroy cancer cells but leave healthy cells unharmed.

My opinion is that, even though it's a business the core of it is the desire to help people who want to regain their health as much as possible back, the emotional intelligence and a necessary level of empathy and expertise which everyone from the clinic showed me.

How Much Does Cancer Treatment Abroad Cost?

Cancer treatment abroad can be 50% to 80% more affordable than in the USA. For example, Turkey and Israel can save you up to 75% on treatments like surgery and immunotherapy, while Germany and Austria offer savings of around 30%60%.

Why Patients Choose Cancer Treatment Abroad

Costs and wait times are the two main reasons why patients are choosing to get cancer treatment abroad.

1. Cost savings

Cancer treatment abroad can be 50% to 80% cheaper than in the USA, while involving therapies not readily available in other parts of the world.

2. Shorter wait times (and better survival outcomes).

Patients seeking treatment abroad can often start their cancer care within days. In contrast, NHS waiting times in the UK are at an all-time high, with 300,000 patients paying out-of-pocket for private treatment due to delays. Over 34% of patients wait longer than 2 months for urgent cancer treatment.

Delays in treatment can negatively affect survival rates. For example, cancer survival in the UK lags behind other European countries like Germany and Austria for 9 out of 10 common cancers. Faster treatment abroad can help improve a patient's chances of recovery.

What Types of Cancer Treatments Are Available Abroad?

getting cancer treatment abroad

Clinics abroad offer a broad spectrum of therapies, from time-tested methods to the latest innovations:

After a consultation and diagnostic procedures, your doctor will determine which therapies will be the most effective for your case and create a treatment plan.

Funding Options for International Patients

UK: For treatment within the European Economic Area (EEA), the S2 and EU directive routes can reduce costs. To get treatment outside Europe, you'll need to discuss alternatives with your local Integrated Care Board (ICB).

USA/Canada: Private insurance may cover some costs, but Medicare, Medicaid, and provincial plans in Canada usually don't. Medical tourism insurance can help with treatment outside the US.

How Can You Travel Abroad with Cancer?

getting cancer treatment abroad

Traveling abroad for cancer treatment requires some thoughtful preparation:

1. Check your fitness for travel. Consult with your doctor to make sure you're fit to travel. Breathlessness, recent surgery, or severe anemia could make flying risky.

2. Take care in the sun. Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. To protect yourself:

  • Use high SPF sunscreen.
  • Wear protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11 am and 3 pm.

3. Avoid health problems. While traveling, be cautious about food and water. To avoid stomach issues:

  • Drink bottled water or boil water.
  • Eat only freshly cooked food and avoid raw or uncooked items.
  • Be mindful of ice, as it may not always be made from safe water.

Can I travel while undergoing cancer treatment?

Yes, patients can usually travel between treatment cycles, but be sure to get your doctor’s approval before making any plans.

Travel insurance for cancer treatment abroad

Cancer falls under pre-existing conditions. This means insurance companies will assess your health and how likely you are to cancel or delay your trip. As a result, the cost of your insurance may increase.

Be upfront about your diagnosis with your insurer. Ask them what's covered, including emergency medical evacuation or trip cancellation.
