"The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person!" Return: About the Doctor: "We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr
My mother was diagnosed in Russia with a terrible diagnosis - breast cancer stage 4. The doctors' actions were not credible, so we turned to Bookimed for the selection of a clinic and a doctor. We were offered a Park-Klinik Weißensee, Dr. Ursula Makowiec. Mom passed a 3-day examination in the hospital, in a separate ward. Friendly atmosphere, professionalism, respect for the elderly patient - all this allowed us to relax, not to try to control every step of the medical staff, to read the articles on the Internet. I was sure that we made the right choice. And most importantly - the diagnosis was not confirmed! My mother was not breast cancer with metastases, but a sweat cancer in the armpit without any signs of metastases, the prognosis is much more favorable. The doctor told us - you came here with a fatal diagnosis, but you came out as a healthy person! We plan to be observed further in this clinic with this doctor. I would also like to thank the translator Marina Wernke. She was not only an excellent professional, but also a very pleasant conversationalist, we were very comfortable with her. I also want to thank the curators who helped a lot all the time while mom was in the clinic.

In the clinic, with the help of coordinators, a consultation with explanations was successfully held
Very quick and clear consultation of Bookimed coordinators. For several hours, they helped organize a consultation at the clinic and lure the flight. A transfer from the airport to the city was also organized. In the clinic, with the help of coordinators, a consultation with explanations was successfully held, diagnostics were carried out, and the treatment process started. Very good attitude of doctors.

The clinic was very carefully selected for treatment, where I was very well received. The whole team helped me and answered all my questions. I cannot say anything for the treatment so far as the protocol has just been appointed and there is no result yet. Expert Overview about Breast cancer Treatment in Germany

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the main types of breast-cancer treatment available in Germany?

Germany provides integrated breast cancer care through certified Breast Centers using S3 Guidelines. Treatment combines organ-preserving surgery, advanced radiotherapy, and personalized systemic therapies like immunotherapy or targeted drugs. Multidisciplinary tumor boards at institutions like Nordwest Clinic or Medical Center in Solingen customize every patient plan.

  • Surgical options: Over 70% of patients receive lumpectomy or breast-conserving surgery.
  • Systemic therapy: Options include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and HER2-targeted treatments like Trastuzumab.
  • Radiation techniques: Clinics utilize IMRT, VMAT, and intraoperative radiation to protect healthy tissue.
  • Advanced immunology: Specialized centers develop individual antitumor vaccines and offer Keytruda for triple-negative cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: German Breast Centers often prioritize immediate reconstruction during the primary surgery. At the Medical Center in Solingen, Dr. Manuela Seifert combines oncoplastic techniques with tumor removal. This approach maintains the natural breast appearance in a single procedure. Our data shows this significantly reduces the emotional burden for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that bringing original pathology slides for a second opinion is vital. Many note that German doctors often adjust initial diagnoses, leading to more favorable treatment protocols.

How do German doctors decide on an individual treatment plan?

German doctors determine breast cancer treatment plans through multidisciplinary tumor boards. Specialists from oncology, radiology, and surgery review tumor biology, genetics, and staging. They follow German Cancer Society standards and ESMO guidelines to ensure evidence-based care tailored to each patient.

  • Tumor board review: Experts from multiple disciplines jointly review every individual case.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Decisions rely on PET/CT, MRI, and detailed histopathology revisions.
  • Genetic screening: Doctors use BRCA testing to decide between lumpectomy and mastectomy.
  • Specialized certification: Plans are developed in centers certified by the German Cancer Society.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows German university hospitals like Charité or Düsseldorf prioritize organ-preserving surgeries. Dr. Manuela Seifert at Solingen specifically focuses on breast-conserving techniques. This approach often results in shorter 3-day hospital stays while maintaining high oncological safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to request written tumor board summaries to understand the logic behind a plan. Many also emphasize bringing an advocate to consultations to help track details during complex medical discussions.

Is breast-conserving surgery common in Germany?

Breast-conserving surgery is the standard treatment for early-stage breast cancer in Germany. Approximately 80% of patients with T1 or T2 tumors receive this organ-preserving intervention. National screening programs further increase this rate to 86%. Certified breast centers prioritize aesthetic results alongside oncological safety.

  • Standard of care: BCS is the primary option for suitable early-stage tumors.
  • Success rates: Screening-detected cases reach an 86% breast-preservation rate.
  • Specialized centers: 90% of cases are treated at certified breast centers.
  • Combined therapy: Radiation therapy follows surgery to ensure long-term effectiveness.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical data shows that German specialists like Dr. Manuela Seifert at Medical Center in Solingen head dedicated breast clinics focused on organ-preserving methods. Choosing a German Cancer Society-certified center is vital. These facilities, including Nordrhein-Westfalen Clinic Complex, must perform high annual procedure volumes to maintain their accreditation. This high volume directly correlates with the surgical precision needed to achieve clean margins while preserving the breast shape.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that German surgeons prioritize breast preservation and discuss cosmetic outcomes, such as shape and sensation, during the initial surgical planning. Reviews from clinics like Schlosspark Clinic emphasize that even complex diagnoses are meticulously verified before surgery to ensure the most favorable treatment path.

What survival results do German breast-cancer centers achieve?

What defines a 'Certified Breast Center' in Germany?

A certified breast center in Germany is a medical facility that met strict quality standards set by the German Cancer Society and the German Society of Senology. These centers must treat at least 150 new primary cases annually and pass rigorous on-site audits to maintain their status.

  • Annual volume: Centers must treat 150+ new cases annually to ensure deep clinical expertise.
  • Surgeon experience: Lead surgeons are required to perform at least 50 primary surgeries every year.
  • Tumor boards: Multidisciplinary teams must meet weekly to create personalized treatment plans for patients.
  • Quality standards: Facilities must hold ISO 9001 certification and follow evidence-based S3 clinical guidelines.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many German clinics treat oncology, only specific ones like Medical Center in Solingen hold the German Cancer Society certification. Our data shows these certified hubs often integrate specialized nursing and plastic surgery for immediate reconstruction. High-volume centers like Asklepios Hospital Barmbek handle 110,000+ patients yearly, providing faster access to clinical trials.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that certified centers typically move much faster, often reaching surgery within 2 to 4 weeks. They feel more secure knowing a full team of experts reviews their specific case during weekly meetings.

Do top German hospitals have dedicated services for international patients?

Top German hospitals provide dedicated services through International Patient Offices to manage administrative and personal needs. These departments act as a central bridge between foreign patients and medical staff. They typically coordinate medical visa invitations, cost estimates, and multilingual support during clinical examinations.

  • Administrative support: Assistance with official invitation letters and medical visa applications.
  • Language assistance: Access to multilingual coordinators and certified interpreters for consultations.
  • Clinical coordination: Scheduling diagnostic tests, surgeries, and follow-up care with oncology specialists.
  • Logistics coordination: Organizing airport transfers and hotel bookings for patients and families.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While university centers like Charite Berlin serve over 800,000 patients annually, they often prioritize complex medical cases over concierge-style hospitality. For a more personalized experience, clinics like Asklepios Hospital Barmbek are specifically ranked by the Medical Travel Quality Alliance as top choices for international patients. These centers often include dedicated coordinators who manage everything from 3D mammography scheduling to private room arrangements, which can be harder to navigate in larger academic institutions.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while medical care is excellent, navigating German paperwork requires direct requests for an English-speaking coordinator. Many note that hiring a professional medical translator is helpful for advocacy during complex discussions with nursing and administrative staff.
