  • Colonoscopy: $1,200 – $1,800

Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!
I suppose I’d give it a 4.8, really. But that wasn’t down to you. The doctor saw me an hour and a half after the scheduled time. However, the consultation was very informative. Thank you to your organisation and to you personally, as well as to Angelica from the host organisation, for your help!

My experience has been entirely negative. The treatment prescribed did not follow the standard protocol for this condition. Under this treatment, the condition only worsened. I was given information about the most effective treatment currently used worldwide. I never received the doctor’s conclusion following the consultation, even though I asked for it several times. And on top of everything else, judging by the result, it wasn’t worth €500. A treatment that doesn’t work, with no documentation whatsoever. Just a conversation with a professor to whom you have to ask a thousand questions and figure out the treatment options for your condition yourself, because he offers nothing and explains nothing.
Speed of service delivery
The treatment recommended by the professor at the Austrian clinic was completely at odds with standard treatment protocols I never received the discharge summary, even though I had asked for it several times

I was not in the hospital. I asked just a second opinion. I was very disappointed, because I was working a lot to translate all the documentation into English, and finally I was discussing with doctor only 10 minutes, and the level of the discussion was very poor. Practically I did not get anything for 400 EUR.

Reply from Professor Johaness Drach:
Second opinion is given on the basis of a thorough analyses of provided medical reports. The procedure lasts as long until all questions of the patient have been clarified. If necessary specialists of other disciplines are also involved. The patient always receive a written statement.

the trip to the clinic was usually. I got advice, paid a doctor, translator and intermediary, did not receive receipts for these payments. But I don’t understand what the bonus actually consisted of, which I ordered through Bookimed and how to really get it. After this trip, I again received a letter about the bonus, but, in my opinion, these letters really do not cost anything.

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

Preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism
The medical team was very professional, available at a short notice, explaining the options, and ready to answer any questions. All necessary medical tests have been done quickly. The preparation for surgery, operation itself and post-surgery care were performed with utmost care and professionalism, overall hospital environment was calming, which helped to reduce the stress associated with surgery and diagnosis. It would be good to have an accurate estimate of costs in advance to make an informed decision.
About Bookimed service
So far I am very satisfied with the support from Bookimed: they have contacted upon request within 24 hours, proposed travel assistance, different options of facilities/doctors for diagnosis, guided through the medical assessment process, made schedules of visits/tests/surgery at the shortest possible time, provided translation of medical documentation, have been accompanying to the visits/tests on spot at the clinic and helped with formalities/German language. Additionally, after the actual estimate of surgery costs have been higher compared to initial estimation, Bookimed was looking for ways to find the savings and negotiate the price. It was very helpful to keep in touch with Bookimed staff almost on a daily basis, with two of them: a remote manager and on-site representative, who co-ordinated well with each other. I would have a small suggestion: to provide a little bit more detail on the schedule of tests/hospital admission and needed preparation.

Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication
Very fast reaction from Bookimed in communication. Initial discussion was for an appointment in AKH and subsequently we have been forwarded to the Privatklinik. The Klinik looks very well managed. We still did not proceed with the treatment and I'm not currently able to share opinion about the Clinic itself and the treatment (will come back soon, once have treatment there). I've been in the Wiener Privatklinik for a consultation. I manage to meet the exact doctors/professors for which I was looking for a contact and did a good job. The whole story was organized and managed by Bookimed with care for the patient. Angelina Ivanenko was my contact in Bookimed and even she was on vacation for the Christmas holidays she did not put on hold the communication. For us this was very important that we are not losing time.

FAQ about Oncology in Austria

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

How are the safety and quality of cancer treatment ensured in Austrian clinics?

Austrian oncology centers maintain rigorous safety standards through mandatory ISO certifications and strict European Union health regulations. Facilities like Wiener Privatklinik and Vienna General Hospital (AKH) use integrated clinical pathways. These systems ensure multidisciplinary review and adherence to international treatment protocols for every patient.

  • Hospital certifications: Clinics frequently hold ISO International Standards and Newsweek Best Hospitals rankings.
  • Safety protocols: Facilities like Döbling Private Hospital implement JCI-International Patient Safety Goals.
  • Expert oversight: Many specialists are professors at the Medical University of Vienna.
  • Clinical integration: Centers often feature 25+ specialized departments for comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that premier Viennese clinics like Wiener Privatklinik integrate university-level expertise into a private setting. With over 400 physicians, including many university professors, patients receive academic-grade research within a boutique environment. This unique structure allows for rapid diagnostic turnaround, often completing full PET/CT scans and consultations in 1 day.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the medical environment feels more like a professional hotel than a hospital. They emphasize that while medical care is top-tier, requesting a detailed cost estimate in advance is helpful for planning.

How do Austrian oncology centers control the risk of infection during treatment?

Austrian oncology centers manage infection risk through rigorous blood monitoring and personalized prophylactic protocols. Clinics utilize weekly laboratory tests to track white blood cell counts. High-risk patients receive G-CSF injections to stimulate immune recovery. Intensive care units and specialized isolation rooms protect those with severe immunosuppression.

  • Blood monitoring: Weekly complete blood counts (CBC) identify immune drops after intensive treatment cycles.
  • Medical prophylaxis: Doctors prescribe antifungal and antibiotic medications during high-risk phases of therapy.
  • Immune support: G-CSF injections are standard to boost white blood cell production and recovery.
  • Safety protocols: Facilities like Döbling Private Hospital implement JCI international patient safety goals.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Vienna centers shows that clinics with over 25 departments, such as Wiener Privatklinik, use multidisciplinary teams to catch secondary infections early. This is vital since they manage 400+ physicians including specialists in cancer-related skin reactions like Dr. Christiane Thallinger. This internal network ensures that a dermatologist or infectiologist is available immediately without the need for external referrals, which is a significant advantage for international patients staying in local apartments.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that infection risks are highest 7 to 14 days after infusion sessions. They emphasize the need to avoid public transport and crowds during these specific windows while living in Vienna.

How long does recovery take after cancer treatment in Austria before it is safe to fly?

Recovery timelines in Austria depend on the procedure and individual health status. Patients typically fly 7 to 14 days after major oncology surgery. Radiotherapy usually allows for travel 1 day after the final session. Always obtain a medical clearance note from your surgeon before booking flights.

  • Surgical recovery: Most patients regain basic mobility within 3 to 7 days post-operation.
  • Flight clearance: Long-haul flights require 10–14 days of stabilization to prevent vascular complications.
  • Radiotherapy travel: Patients often travel immediately after treatment if fatigue levels remain manageable.
  • Minimally invasive: Robotic or endoscopic techniques in Vienna may reduce hospital stays to 3 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from Wiener Privatklinik and Vienna General Hospital (AKH) shows a high volume of international patients. These clinics often coordinate with airlines like Lufthansa for medical clearance forms. This ensures patients receive necessary airport assistance and documentation by day 7 after surgeries like thyroidectomy.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Austrian protocols prioritize early movement, which helps speed up recovery. Many travelers recommend wearing compression socks and walking every 2 hours during the flight home to stay comfortable.

How long does outpatient cancer treatment take in Austria?

Plan for 10–14 days in Austria for initial outpatient oncology cycles and follow-up scans. This timeframe includes the consultation, diagnostic imaging like PET-CT, and the first treatment session. Standard radiotherapy or immunotherapy cycles typically require 5–7 days per visit for international patients.

  • Initial diagnostics: PET-CT and MRI scans usually take 1–2 days for completion and results.
  • Treatment cycles: Outpatient immunotherapy or chemotherapy typically requires 1–2 days per active session.
  • Proton therapy: Plan 10 days total for scans, 5 daily sessions, and a final review.
  • Prostate treatment: Schedule 14 days to cover pre-op, 7 treatment days, and post-therapy scans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows Viennese clinics like Wiener Privatklinik operate with extreme efficiency, often providing 'door-to-scan' services within 24–48 hours. Patients can save time by arriving on a Tuesday or Wednesday. This avoids weekend delays for complex lab results or specialized scans like PET-CT, which are more widely available during the workweek.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that medical tests are completed very quickly in Vienna. One patient mentioned the ultra-short timelines were vital for their care, though others suggest allowing a few extra days to handle logistics and apartment rentals without stress.

What support do international patients and their families receive in Austrian oncology centers?

Austrian oncology centers typically allow one family member to accompany patients during consultations and hospital stays. Hospitals like Wiener Privatklinik provide a multilingual environment. Specialized services include professional medical interpreters and psychological support. These arrangements should be confirmed at least 1 week before your arrival.

  • Family stays: Many Vienna hospitals permit overnight family stays in patient rooms.
  • Interpreter services: Professional medical interpreters require 48 to 72 hours of advance notice.
  • Language support: Leading facilities like Wiener Privatklinik offer a dedicated multilingual environment.
  • Pastoral care: Austrian Cancer Aid provides peer support and counseling for oncology patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-rated clinics like Wiener Privatklinik shows they prioritize international logistics by providing dedicated patient coordinators. These staff members, such as those mentioned in patient reviews, handle local apartment rentals and airport transfers. This level of support is more common in private facilities than in larger state hospitals like Vienna General Hospital (AKH).

Patient Consensus: Patients note that having a dedicated coordinator at the clinic helps manage everything from visas to daily logistics. They emphasize that while doctors speak English, booking a professional interpreter prevents any gaps in understanding complex medical plans.

Why is Vienna a leading center for oncology?

Vienna is the primary Austrian city with an international reputation for oncology. It serves as a central European medical hub. The city features the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). These institutions act as reference centers for complex cancer cases. Vienna is easily accessible via its international airport and major rail networks.

  • Medical hub: Vienna hosts 42+ university hospitals and clinics like Wiener Privatklinik.
  • Expert access: Patients reach specialists like Prof. Dr. Christoph Zielinski for immunotherapy.
  • Transport links: Vienna International Airport connects directly to over 190 global destinations.
  • Volume and scale: Vienna General Hospital (AKH) treats over 590,000 patients annually.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Vienna clinics show a unique trend where top professors from the Medical University of Vienna often practice at private facilities like Wiener Privatklinik. This gives patients a significant advantage. You receive the academic expertise of a 300-year-old institution but with the shorter wait times and personalized service of a private hospital. Most of these high-rated clinics are located within a 20-minute drive from the city center, making logistics simple for international visitors.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Vienna is an ideal destination for second opinions because diagnostic tests are completed exceptionally fast. Many emphasize that having a single, English-speaking oncologist stay involved throughout the entire journey provides much-needed continuity and peace of mind.

Why is Austria considered a leading destination for oncology treatment?

Austria leads oncology care through high survival rates and rapid access to new targeted therapies. Centres like Wiener Privatklinik and Vienna General Hospital (AKH) integrate research with clinical practice. Patients benefit from precision-guided radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and multidisciplinary tumour boards that individualise every treatment plan.

  • Modern technology: Amethyst Radiotherapy Austria uses Elekta Versa HD for precision-guided treatment.
  • Academic expertise: Specialists like Prof. Dr Christoph C. Zielinski lead research-integrated programmes.
  • Specialised care: Dedicated centres focus on complex cases like thoracic and haematologic oncology.
  • Rapid diagnostics: Facilities offer PET/CT and whole-body MRI for fast, accurate cancer staging.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many countries offer standard chemotherapy. However, Austrian centres like Amethyst Radiotherapy Austria specialise in reducing treatment times through stereotactic regimes. For example, their prostate schedules can take only 7 sessions instead of the usual 39. This efficiency results from using real-time imaging and high-precision linear accelerators.

Patient Consensus: Patients find the hospital environments calming. They note that medical teams are professional and available at short notice. They appreciate the smooth logistics, fast diagnostic testing, and the high level of care from professors in Vienna.

How are cancer treatment decisions made in Austrian hospitals?

Austrian hospitals make cancer treatment decisions through multidisciplinary tumour boards. Specialists in oncology, surgery, and radiology review each case together to create evidence-based strategies. This approach follows the National Cancer Framework Programme. This programme sets priorities for hospital stays and treatment history.

  • Tumour board review: Specialists like Dr David Kuczer present every case to in-house boards.
  • Expert collaboration: Professors from the Medical University of Vienna provide academic-level clinical input.
  • Precision planning: Centres use PET/CT and MRI to tailor therapies to specific diagnoses.
  • Personalised care: Plans consider systemic options like immunotherapy from Price on request to Price on request .

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that top private facilities in Vienna, such as Wiener Privatklinik, use physicians who are also professors at major university hospitals. This allows patients to access university research and clinical trials in a comfortable private setting. This combination often results in faster diagnostic turnarounds compared to public systems.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Austria value knowing which doctor leads the plan. They appreciate when teams explain why they chose specific surgery or chemotherapy sequences. Experience shows that seeking a second opinion is a common way to clarify timing and treatment intensity.

What does personalised oncology involve in Austrian clinics?

Personalised oncology in Austria replaces standard regimens with custom therapies based on a tumour's genetic profile. Specialists use molecular diagnostics to identify specific mutations. This allows doctors like Prof. Dr Christoph C. Zielinski to match patients with targeted systemic inhibitors or immunotherapies. These treatments spare healthy tissue.

  • Molecular profiling: Pathologists evaluate cancer genes using next-generation sequencing for precise targeting.
  • Tumour board review: Experts at Wiener Privatklinik review genomic data to create custom roadmaps.
  • Targeted treatment: Specialists like Dr Wolfgang Köstler use systemic inhibitors designed for specific biomarkers.
  • Clinical trial access: University hubs coordinate trials for rare or therapy-resistant cancer strains.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Vienna's medical landscape offers a rare integration between private and university hubs. Prominent specialists like Prof. Dr Walter Klepetko hold primary roles at the Medical University of Vienna. They also see patients at Wiener Privatklinik. This gives private patients direct access to research-based protocols and university-level molecular pathology without public wait times.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Austria value the rapid turnaround for scans and consultations. They often note that the clinics feel more like high-end hotels than hospitals. This helps reduce the stress of intensive treatment.

How specialised are surgical oncologists in Austria?

Surgical oncologists in Austria specialise by organ group, such as the breast or gastrointestinal tract. The country has no formal surgical oncology board certification. Instead, surgeons register under general or visceral subspecialties. High case volumes help specialists maintain technical skills and follow European Society of Surgical Oncology standards.

  • Multidisciplinary approach: All surgeons collaborate through central tumour boards to plan intensive treatment pathways.
  • Organ-specific focus: Surgeons like Dr Walter Klepetko specialise exclusively in complex thoracic oncology.
  • Specialised technology: Specialists use robotic systems and intraoperative neuromonitoring to protect nerve function during surgery.
  • Clinical leadership: Prof. Dr Florian Fitzal leads breast reconstruction surgery with over 20 years of experience.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Austrian oncology centres like Wiener Privatklinik use a unique professor-led model. Most senior surgeons also hold professorships at the Medical University of Vienna. This means they are both active researchers and high-volume practitioners. Patients gain faster access to experimental protocols and precision-guided surgical techniques not available elsewhere.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Austria appreciate the professional medical teams and short waiting times for tests. They often note that the clinic environments feel more like comfortable hotels than hospitals.

What advanced oncology therapies are available in Austria?

Austria offers oncology therapies including ion beam and proton therapy, immunotherapy, and personalised targeted treatments. Centres like Wiener Privatklinik and Amethyst Radiotherapy Austria use multidisciplinary tumour boards to design plans for complex cases. They also provide quick access to specialised PET/CT diagnostics.

  • Particle therapy: Delivers focused proton or carbon ion beams to treat intricate tumours precisely.
  • Radiotherapy: Uses Elekta Versa HD technology for real-time tumour tracking and image-guided treatments.
  • Immunotherapy: Includes programmed cellular treatments and monoclonal antibodies like Keytruda to destroy cancer cells.
  • Nuclear medicine: Provides targeted radioligand therapies for advanced prostate and neuroendocrine tumours in Vienna.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients seeking radiotherapy in Vienna benefit from compressed schedules. Some clinics, such as Amethyst Radiotherapy, offer stereotactic prostate regimens in just seven sessions. This compares to the conventional 39 sessions. This efficiency stems from using integrated MRI and ConeBeam CT planning. This allows for higher precision and fewer hospital visits.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the Austrian hospital environment feels more like a hotel. This helps reduce the stress of surgery and diagnosis. They value the quick turnaround for medical tests and the coordinated support for international visitors.

Can international patients request a second opinion from Austrian oncologists?

International patients can request expert second opinions from Austrian oncologists. This is done through remote record reviews or in-person consultations. Leading centres in Vienna provide these services. They often use multidisciplinary tumour boards to review complex cases. Specialists can assess diagnosis and treatment plans within a few business days.

  • Remote reviews: Specialists review scans and pathology reports sent securely without requiring travel.
  • Expert access: Consultation with an oncologist typically costs from $200 to $400.
  • Academic expertise: Many specialists are professors at the Medical University of Vienna.
  • Clinical pathways: Centres like Wiener Privatklinik offer dedicated International Oncology Center support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high ratings, like Wiener Privatklinik, often handle diagnostic work-ups in just 1 day. Moving quickly from a remote second opinion to on-site testing helps international patients. Choosing a facility with academic links to the Medical University of Vienna provides access to specialists. These doctors are often involved in current cancer research.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Austria note that consultations are professional. It is essential to have all medical records translated into English or German beforehand. Many appreciate using video calls for initial assessments to discuss treatment options before travelling.

What is the typical timeframe for commencing cancer treatment in Austria?

Cancer treatment in Austria typically starts 2 to 4 weeks after a confirmed diagnosis. Private facilities often fast-track urgent cases like acute leukaemia within 7 to 10 days. Leading Vienna centres specialise in rapid molecular pathology and multidisciplinary board reviews for international patients.

  • Diagnostic phase: Imaging and biopsies usually take 1 to 3 weeks for full processing.
  • Board review: Specialists meet within 1 to 2 weeks to formalise tailored treatment plans.
  • Surgical timing: Primary tumour resections are often completed within 30 days of initial diagnosis.
  • Follow-up care: Adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy typically begins 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with strong academic ties, like Wiener Privatklinik, use professors from the Medical University of Vienna. These experts lead tumour boards. This connection allows patients to access high-quality diagnostics while bypassing long administrative queues in public hospitals. This dual-access model significantly shortens the gap between consultation and active treatment.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that medical teams react very quickly. They can often organise all necessary examinations within a single day. Many found the environment calm and professional. This helped simplify logistics and reduced the stress of beginning intensive treatment in Austria.
