Drs seemed very good. The consultation was calm and professional but I was told I would have results within 2 working days. When I didn’t receive any information I returned to the hospital and was told I would be emailed within 24 hours. When that didn’t happen I had to come in again and was hugely surprised by a very rude and impatient receptionist who was dismissive and seemed to want to blame me somehow. She made some very unprofessional comments about me to colleagues in front of other patients when she thought I couldn’t hear. Other staff did their best to help afterwards but considering the money spent and my experience I would not recommend this place at all.

I went to the Galeazzi clinic. Milan. Italy. on my son's problem - gmgantism. Coordinators from Bookimed got involved. Had an online consultation. for which I paid 360 euros. All required documentation has been sent. references. analyses. x-rays. To determine the volume of the operation and the cost, they said that the patient needs to come to Milan. I'm from Ukraine. It's hard to describe how the journey cost me. with what difficulty. Upon arrival in Milan. we are consulted by another doctor and gives quite the opposite answer.!! Is it really impossible to agree and view all the documentation. y t. h and the video was sent!!! with immediately give a negative answer during an online consultation. why do it at all then? It's just a waste of money. not problem solving. Be careful!

"A trip to the clinic was done by Yana
Hello, I have serious scoliosis and some other health problems, it is necessary to operate scoliosis and preferably as soon as possible since it will only get worse ... In Ukraine, everyone refused to operate because there was a very big risk, Poland also refused ... Then I My coordinator Pavel Popkov wrote to Bookimed just a great person, he answers any questions even to stupid ones, he sent my documents to different clinics and finally the Galeazzi clinic was told to come for a detailed consultation ... The consultation was successful, everything seems to be going positive, waiting for a final decision from them! A trip to the clinic was done by Yana. She got us free tickets for a special program.

FAQ about Surgical treatment of valgus deformity in Italy

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the most common surgical techniques for hallux-valgus correction in Italy?

Italian orthopedic surgeons prioritize minimally invasive and percutaneous techniques like PBS and MICA to correct hallux valgus with minimal scarring. While 80% of procedures combine bunionectomy with osteotomy, advanced Italian methods allow for immediate weight-bearing and faster recovery through specialized micro-incisions.

  • Minimally invasive surgery: Uses 2-3 mm incisions to perform precise bone realignment without large scars.
  • PBS technique: An Italian innovation using specialized burrs for osteotomy without screws or pins.
  • MICA procedure: A third-generation percutaneous method using internal screws for stable, immediate post-op walking.
  • Open osteotomy: Reserved for complex cases, utilizing Chevron or Scarf Z-shaped cuts for stability.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan serves as Italy's orthopedic hub, with IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performing 75% of the country's revision surgeries. This high volume suggests that patients with failed previous corrections should focus their search on Milan-based specialized research hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently express relief at the ability to walk immediately after percutaneous procedures. Most emphasize that choosing specialized centers in Northern Italy provides access to the latest `pin-less` surgical technologies.

How long is the recovery period after hallux-valgus surgery, and when can normal activities resume?

Recovery from hallux valgus surgery typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks for most daily activities, with full bone healing taking up to 6 months. Most patients transition to standard footwear by week 8, though minor residual swelling may persist for 12 months.

  • Initial phase: Elevate the foot strictly for 14 days to manage swelling and protect incisions.
  • Walking transition: Many Italian orthopedic centers allow immediate weight-bearing using specialized heel-only protective shoes.
  • Footwear return: Switch from surgical boots to supportive sneakers between 6 and 8 weeks post-surgery.
  • Daily activities: Driving is often possible within 2 weeks if the left foot was treated.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan serves as Italy's orthopedic hub, where IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio performs 75% of the country's revision surgeries. Choosing high-volume research hospitals like these ensures access to minimally invasive techniques. These methods often allow for earlier mobilization compared to traditional open surgeries, which is vital for long-term joint flexibility.

Is the operation painful and how is pain managed?

Modern surgical treatment of valgus deformity in Italy uses multimodal analgesia to ensure controlled comfort. Surgeons employ minimally invasive or open techniques alongside nerve blocks and non-opioid medications. Patients typically experience manageable soreness rather than severe pain during the initial 2 to 3 days of recovery.

  • Anesthesia methods: Local or regional nerve blocks numb the foot during and after surgery.
  • Medication strategy: Teams combine non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with short-term specialized pain relief.
  • Surgical approach: Minimally invasive options are available at Milanese clinics to reduce tissue trauma.
  • Physical recovery: Elevation and ice packs effectively manage inflammation and throbbing sensations post-operatively.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Italian orthopedic centers like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio perform over 5,000 operations annually with high specialization. Their expertise in revision surgeries suggests a refined approach to postoperative pain management. Selecting a high-volume facility often guarantees more advanced protocols for nerve-related discomfort.

Patient Consensus: Many patients describe the sensation as a dull pressure rather than sharp pain. They highlight that following the elevation schedule is vital for keeping swelling and discomfort low.

Can valgus deformity of the knee (genu valgum) be corrected surgically in Italy, and what options exist?

Italy offers world-class surgical correction for valgus deformity through growth modulation for children or corrective osteotomy for adults. Leading centers in Milan and Rome use realignment techniques to fix the knee axis. High-volume hospitals like IRCCS Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio specialize in complex orthopedic revisions and joint reconstructions.

  • Surgical techniques: Distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) or high tibial osteotomy (HTO) realign the weight-bearing axis.
  • Pediatric options: Growth modulation uses tension-band plates to guide natural alignment in growing children.
  • Advanced procedures: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) corrects severe deformity combined with advanced joint arthritis.
  • Leading facilities: IRCCS Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio performs 75% of Italy's orthopedic revision surgeries.
  • Recovery timeline: Patients typically return to full activity within 6 to 12 months post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Milan serves as Italy's orthopedic hub, with IRCCS Galeazzi - SantAmbrogio seeing over 340,000 patients annually. While smaller clinics offer personalized care, these high-volume research hospitals provide superior access to specialized surgeons. Choosing a facility that combines research with assistance ensures access to the latest alignment protocols.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that specialized physiotherapy is just as vital as the surgery itself. Most report significant pain relief and functional improvement, though full recovery often takes longer than initially expected.

Which clinics or hospitals in Italy are notable for hallux-valgus surgery?

Italy excels in orthopedic care, with Milan and Rome serving as primary hubs for hallux valgus correction. Leading institutions like IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi and San Raffaele specialize in minimally invasive percutaneous techniques. These methods ensure high success rates and faster mobilization for patients.

  • Ospedale Galeazzi (Milan): Italy's top-rated orthopedic hospital performs 5,000 operations annually with ISO standards.
  • San Raffaele (Milan): Europe's major research facility delivers advanced orthopedic care to 300,000 patients yearly.
  • Villa Stuart (Rome): This FIFA Medical Center of Excellence focuses on rapid recovery for athletes.
  • Ospedale San Carlo: Part of GVM Research, this Rome-based clinic utilizes advanced 3D Lapidus procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi in Milan is uniquely specialized in complex revision cases. It handles 75% of Italy's orthopedic revision surgeries. This volume indicates a level of expertise that simpler clinics cannot match. Patients seeking correction for failed previous bunion surgeries should prioritize this facility.

Patient Consensus: While public options are available, patients often choose private clinics to avoid 6-month wait times. Most report returning to walking within 2 weeks after minimally invasive procedures in Rome.
