Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.

FAQ about IntraLase Laser Eye Surgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is IntraLase the same as FemtoLASIK?

IntraLase is a specific brand of femtosecond laser used during FemtoLASIK procedures. While FemtoLASIK describes the all-laser technique of creating a corneal flap without blades, IntraLase is the hardware system that performs this step. All IntraLase surgeries are FemtoLASIK, but other laser brands also exist.

  • Procedure type: FemtoLASIK is the clinical term for bladeless, all-laser vision correction.
  • Brand identity: IntraLase is the most recognized brand name for femtosecond laser technology.
  • Safety profile: Using lasers instead of mechanical blades enhances flap precision and safety.
  • Clinical advantage: IntraLase systems offer superior accuracy for patients with high prescriptions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While IntraLase pioneered the field, newer systems like the Zeiss VisuMax are gaining ground in Spain. Clinics like Hospital Ruber Internacional utilize advanced imaging like 3-Tesla MRI for comprehensive diagnostics. If you tend to squint or squeeze your eyes, ask about the suction stability of your surgeon's specific laser model.

Patient Consensus: Many find the precision of IntraLase reassuring for thin corneas. Others recommend asking about SMILE, as it avoids creating a flap entirely to reduce dry eye risks.

Does the surgery hurt?

IntraLase laser eye surgery in Spain is painless because surgeons use topical anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye surface. You remain awake but feel only slight pressure during the 15-minute outpatient procedure. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours with clear vision.

  • Anesthesia method: Specific numbing drops eliminate pain throughout the entire laser reshaping process.
  • Sensation during: Patients often report a strong suction or pulling feeling during flap creation.
  • Immediate recovery: Mild stinging or a foreign body sensation usually lasts 2 to 6 hours.
  • Rapid healing: Most discomfort completely subsides by the next morning after a brief rest.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While surgeries at top-tier centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional or Centro Médico Teknon are painless, the suction ring phase is what surprises patients most. This circular pressure lasts less than 30 seconds but is often described as the most intense physical sensation. Choosing a highly experienced specialist like Dr. Ferran Mascaró Zamora ensures this step is handled with precision to minimize patient anxiety.

Patient Consensus: Many describe the recovery as having a grain of sand in the eye for a few hours. Although some notice intense burning similar to onions, it typically vanishes after a short nap.

Is the result of IntraLase permanent?

IntraLase results are permanent. The femtosecond laser makes lifelong structural changes to the cornea to correct refractive errors. While the surgical reshaping lasts forever, natural age-related vision changes like presbyopia or cataracts may still affect your sight after age 40.

  • Corneal reshaping: The laser permanently removes microscopic tissue to fix nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  • Prescription stability: Candidates need a stable prescription for 1–2 years to ensure lasting success.
  • Natural aging: Surgery does not prevent presbyopia, the age-related hardening of the eye lens.
  • Regression risks: Younger patients under 24 may experience slight vision shifts as eyes mature.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While IntraLase permanently alters the cornea, high-volume centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional emphasize patient selection. Our data shows that corneal thickness is the ultimate safety limit. If regression occurs, surgeons only perform a second `touch-up` if enough tissue remains. Choosing a JCI-accredited facility in Spain ensures rigorous pre-operative scanning for these lifelong safety markers.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the flap never fully heals to its original strength, the visual freedom is life-changing. Most suggest waiting until your late 20s to minimize the chance of needing a rare second correction later.

Are Spanish surgeons experienced?

Spanish surgeons are exceptionally experienced and highly sought after globally for their rigorous clinical training. Spain ranks high in the EU medical workforce density. Specialist doctors like Ferran Mascaró Zamora at Centro Médico Teknon hold advanced doctorates and serve as senior department chiefs.

  • Training duration: Surgeons complete a intensive six-year medical program before beginning specialized residency.
  • Advanced credentials: Top specialists often hold PhDs and lead departments in JCI-accredited facilities.
  • Clinical volume: Hospitals like Ruber Internacional perform over 6,000 surgeries annually, ensuring high proficiency.
  • Global demand: Spanish medical qualifications are recognized as elite across the UK, France, and Ireland.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish healthcare data shows a unique focus on academic depth combined with high volume. At Hospital Ruber Internacional, patients benefit from a massive infrastructure of 800 doctors. Choosing a chief specialist ensures your surgeon has likely published research and led hundreds of similar procedures.

Patient Consensus: While safety remains high across all levels, patients emphasize that senior attending physicians work faster. This speed often leads to a shorter and more comfortable recovery period after eye surgery.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery after IntraLase laser eye surgery in Spain is exceptionally rapid, with most patients achieving 20/20 vision within 24 hours. This bladeless LASIK technique allows a return to professional and daily routines within 1 to 3 days, while full visual stabilization typically takes 1 to 4 weeks.

  • Hospital stay: This is a same-day outpatient procedure with immediate discharge after surgery.
  • Initial rest: Patients must rest for at least 4 hours immediately following the 15-minute procedure.
  • Daily activities: Driving and office work are usually permissible by the second postoperative day.
  • Long-term care: Avoid swimming pools, beaches, and strenuous exercise for 30 days to prevent infection.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics focus on the 24-hour vision milestone, the recovery quality depends on the surgeon's speed. At high-volume centers like Hospital Ruber Internacional, which performs 6,000+ surgeries annually, faster operative times translate to less corneal stress and reduced postoperative dryness.

Patient Consensus: Patients often describe a mild sensation similar to chopping onions when applying initial eye drops. Most are surprised by how quickly morning fog disappears, often reaching 20/15 vision by the third day.

How long does the procedure take?

IntraLase laser eye surgery in Spain is a rapid outpatient procedure. The actual laser active time typically takes only 3.5 to 7 minutes for both eyes. However, expect to spend 25 to 30 minutes in the operating room to account for surgical preparation and post-operative checks.

  • Procedure duration: The laser treatment lasts roughly 7 minutes per eye during the process.
  • Operating room time: Preparation, positioning, and anesthesia extend the total session to 30 minutes.
  • Laser flap creation: IntraLase femtosecond technology creates the corneal flap in a matter of seconds.
  • Post-operative observation: Patients usually stay for a 10-minute eye drop check before being discharged.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the surgery is fast, choosing top-tier facilities like Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid ensures access to JCI-accredited safety standards. Their high surgical volume of 6,000 yearly procedures suggests efficient workflows, potentially reducing your total time spent in the clinic on surgery day.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that while they feel minor discomfort for about 15 seconds, the procedure is surprisingly quick. Many reported that any redness on the white of the eye usually clears within 2 weeks.
