The coordinator helped me perfectly in determining the place of treatment, collecting all the necessary documents and agreeing with the clinic about my hospitalization
It is still difficult to assess the level of medicine, it will be necessary to find out the results and see if the treatment helps. The doctor seemed very competent, but it also needs to be checked. The conditions in the wards were top notch. The coordinator helped me perfectly in determining the place of treatment, collecting all the necessary documents and agreeing with the clinic about my hospitalization. Himself would be very difficult.

"Especially I want to say about Dr
First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the coordinator of the International Patient Support Center, Svetlana Pashchenko, who helped with the professional choice of a doctor and in solving organizational issues of a trip to Spain. I want to express my gratitude to the staff of the above clinic. High professionalism, attentive attitude to patients, kindness and cordiality of the personnel of the center are those qualities that anyone who comes for help faces. The junior and nursing staff are tactful, quickly responding to the requests of patients. Everywhere cleanliness and comfort. The medical staff is not only competent specialists, but also just kind and cordial people. They always come into the ward with smiles, they know how to cheer up a child, and how to explain the need for medical procedures. Thanks to them, children feel safe, comfortably settling in this medical institution, equipped with the latest medical equipment. Especially I want to say about Dr. Antonio Russi, from whom I am delighted! Highly professional doctor of the European level - Doctor “From God”, possessing high theoretical and practical knowledge in his medical profile. Doctors Russi is distinguished by an individual approach and self-control, patience, wisdom, honesty, calmness and high competence. Such a sensitive, attentive doctor can be trusted not only with the examination and subsequent medical prescriptions, but also as a whole with further treatment of the child. Many of the patients of the innovative medical center "Teknon" will agree with me that a warm atmosphere of love and respect for patients, emotional support for the health of patients, a positive perception of life and an unlimited belief in complete recovery are created here. May God grant you health and long life! God bless you!                                                                                                    Almaty, Kazakhstan

- We have been trying to understand what has been going on with our child for 2 years, and the doctor has made the horrible diagnosis has been incorrect
We came from Moscow to Barcelona, to Dr. Russi. We have been trying to understand what has been going on with our child for 2 years. Our doctors are so stupid that have made a totally different diagnoses. We were in hell. We underwent all possible tests and had nothing. Dr. Russi has found a cause of the disease and prescribed a medicine. Of course it’s not over, but our child feels better now. The hospital was great. We came over, and paid for procedures. We stayed in a VIP room, however, paid for a standard one. It was big and light. A child was immediately connected to the EEG and heart sensors. Then he underwent the MRI and we left the hospital. Next day we had a consultation, and the doctor informed us about treatment and prescribed a medicine unavailable in Moscow. Thanks a lot to interpreters. Well-done! The doctor has made the horrible diagnosis has been incorrect. And there is only one disadvantage - we are waiting for medical record more than 2 months.

It is thanks to the world's best medical equipment, in which the clinic is equipped and a well-trained team of doctors
Ms. Liza Dudnik from bookimed reacted very fast and was very very involved from the beginning. She was in constant touch with us all the time, even during her holidays. Teknon Centre is one of the best when we think about medical equipment, service, doctors and the atmosphere there. Cleanliness deserves for 5 stars. Dr. Antonio Russi and his team very involved with the study and very helpful when something happens. The nurses were treating my son as their own and thanks to them my son was not feeling as being during the hospitalization. Everybody, there was taking care of my son with great care, patience, and enormous kindness. And finally....what's the most important in this "diamond frame" - the diagnostic of my son is the best. My son's diagnosis is very clear. My son has been examined so thoroughly that the clinics in Germany (where my son is being treated) could not make such a clear diagnosis. It is thanks to the world's best medical equipment, in which the clinic is equipped and a well-trained team of doctors. Everything that has been included in this "diamond frame" deserves the highest rating of customer satisfaction. Nothing, absolutely nothing, does not remain here without a shadow of a doubt.

FAQ about Medication treatment for epilepsy in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What are the common epilepsy medications available in Spain?

Spain offers a comprehensive range of European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved anti-seizure medications, including Levetiracetam, Lamotrigine, and Valproic acid. Recent approvals like Cenobamate and Brivaracetam ensure access to modern therapies. Treatment focuses on personalized selection based on video-EEG monitoring at Joint Commission International-accredited centers in Barcelona and Madrid.

  • Common medications: Options include Lamotrigine (Lamictal), Levetiracetam (Keppra), and Lacosamide (Vimpat) for various seizure types.
  • Modern approvals: Newer drugs like Cenobamate (Ontozry) and Eslicarbazepine (Zebinix) are actively funded and available.
  • Clinical success: Specialized neurologists achieve 70% seizure freedom rates through precise, non-surgical drug therapy adjustments.
  • Expert centers: Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon utilize advanced EEG to refine individual medication plans.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic medications are widely available, the highest success rates in Spain come from specialized drug-resistant epilepsy units. Prof. Antonio Russi at Centro Médico Teknon, with 1,500+ procedures, often identifies incorrect prior diagnoses. This allows for specific medication switches that may not be standard in other countries.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that Spanish neurologists must rewrite all foreign prescriptions to access local pharmacies. Many report that medications become virtually free once registered under the Spanish social security system.

How can I get epilepsy medication through the Spanish public health system?

Epilepsy medication in Spain requires a local electronic prescription linked to a health card. Residents must register at a local health center for a Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual, while visitors use a European Health Insurance Card or a medical report to obtain a Spanish prescription from a licensed neurologist.

  • Registration process: Obtain health cards at local health centers (Centro de Salud) using residency or NIE.
  • Specialist referral: General practitioners must refer patients to neurologists for initial epilepsy medication management.
  • Electronic system: Medications are dispensed via electronic prescriptions (receta electrónica) at any green-cross pharmacy.
  • Diagnostic requirements: Bring existing EEG results and medical records to expedite the local prescription process.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While the public system covers treatment, wait times for neurologists can exceed five months. Bookimed data shows high demand for specialists like Professor Antonio Russi at Centro Médico Teknon, who has managed 2,000+ cases. Choosing a private initial consultation for around $400 to $800 often secures the necessary Spanish prescription much faster than waiting for public system scheduling.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that foreign prescriptions are not accepted at Spanish pharmacies, making a local medical report essential. Most recommend bringing a three-month supply from home while navigating the registration process to avoid gaps in treatment.

Will my foreign prescription be valid for epilepsy treatment in Spain?

Prescriptions issued outside Spain are generally not valid at Spanish pharmacies. Patients must visit a local neurologist or GP to obtain a Spanish e-receta (electronic prescription). While EU/EEA documents have limited legal recognition, pharmacists frequently require a local version for dispensing epilepsy medication.

  • Local consultation: Visit a specialist like Professor Antonio Russi at Centro Médico Teknon.
  • Pharmacy refusal: Spanish pharmacies strictly reject non-EU prescriptions and often face-to-face EU ones.
  • Validity period: Most prescriptions issued within Spain remain valid for only 10 days.
  • Controlled drugs: Narcotic or psychotropic epilepsy medications require Spanish embassy permits before arrival.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a general practitioner can technically re-issue prescriptions, visiting a top-tier center like Hospital Ruber Internacional ensures your medication matches local availability. Spanish brands often use different commercial names, even for the same active ingredients. Leading neurologists can verify the exact dosage match during a quick consultation, preventing dangerous gaps in seizure control.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize bringing enough medication to cover your entire stay plus a buffer. They report that pharmacies will not help if you run out, so always carry your home doctor's report to help local physicians speed up the re-issuing process.

What medications are available in Spain for refractory or drug-resistant epilepsy?

Spain offers advanced third-generation anti-seizure medications for refractory epilepsy within JCI-accredited centers. Specialist protocols prioritize cenobamate as a primary option for adult focal-onset seizures. Personalized drug selection focuses on drug-resistant cases following diagnostic video-EEG monitoring at leading facilities like Centro Médico Teknon.

  • Third-generation medications: Clinics provide newer anticonvulsants including brivaracetam, perampanel, and lacosamide.
  • Cenobamate access: This medication is specifically approved in Spain for drug-resistant focal-onset epilepsy.
  • Personalized protocols: Specialists like Dr. Antonio Russi adjust dosages based on brain activity sensors.
  • Diagnostic monitoring: Comprehensive 3-day video-EEG helps optimize complex multi-drug combination therapy protocols.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish epileptologists often achieve a 70% success rate with medication by moving beyond standard monotreatment. Data from top clinics shows that using specialized sensors to monitor brain activity during drug introduction allows for precise 10/14 hour dosing splits. This technical refinement often eliminates seizures where standard dosing failed.

Patient Consensus: Patients report that while medications like Keppra often prove ineffective for resistant cases, switching to cenobamate or tailored combinations significantly improved their daily stability. Many found relief by seeking coordination for medicines unavailable in their home countries.

Where can I find a specialist to manage my epilepsy medication?

Find specialized epileptologists in Spain at Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited centers like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona or Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid. These specialists manage medication through prolonged video-EEG monitoring and personalized drug selection to achieve up to 70% seizure control.

  • Specialist expertise: Dr. Antonio Russi at Teknon has managed over 2,000 complex cases.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics use 3-Tesla MRI and video-EEG to observe precise drug effects.
  • Prescription authority: In Spain, only neurologists can prescribe anticonvulsants like Keppra or Lamictal.
  • Treatment cost: Medication management in Spain averages $400 to $800 per specialist consultation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain’s top specialists often manage medicine access for international patients through long-term coordination. At Centro Médico Teknon, coordinators help patients ship Spanish prescriptions to countries like Tanzania where specific epilepsy drugs are unavailable. This ensures treatment continuity after the initial consultation.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that general neurologists often miss nuances. They recommend seeing a dedicated epileptologist for thorough EEG studies and clear, written medical reports for home-country follow-up.

What happens if I lose my medication or run out while traveling in Spain?

You must obtain a local prescription from a Spanish doctor to replace lost medication. Spanish pharmacies generally cannot fulfill foreign prescriptions directly. Visit a local health center or hospital emergency department with your original packaging or a formal doctor letter to secure a valid Spanish prescription.

  • Pharmacy access: Look for pharmacies marked with flashing green crosses for immediate consultation.
  • Doctor visit: Visit a Centro de Salud or private clinic for a new prescription.
  • Required documentation: Present your passport, original medication box, and a doctor letter or photo.
  • Insurance support: Contact travel insurance to locate approved clinics and cover emergency medical fees.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While primary care centers handle routine refills, specialized clinics like Centro Médico Teknon in Barcelona offer comprehensive diagnostic reviews. Top specialists like Professor Antonio Russi can provide 6-month telemedicine follow-ups. This ensures long-term medication stability if your travel extends or your condition changes unexpectedly.

Patient Consensus: Always keep medication in original packaging with your name visible. Patients recommend saving Spanish phrases like 'Epilepsia – necesito una receta' to speed up help at hospitals.
