How Much Does Medication treatment for epilepsy Cost in Turkey?

Medication treatment for epilepsy in Turkey ranges from $500 to $800 on average. Costs depend on the diagnostic complexity, specialty of the neurologist, and medication generations. In the US, similar treatment costs approximately $3,000 on average. Patients can find savings of around 77% in Turkey. Standard medical packages often include specialist consultations, advanced EEGs, and neurological imaging.

  • Basic diagnostic programs: $500 to $800 including essential EEGs and initial consultations.
  • Pediatric protocols: Typically cost 20-40% more than adult programs due to specialized child neurology expertise.
  • Advanced imaging: Brain MRI and long-term sleep EEGs often increase package prices by $800 to $1,500.
  • Regional centers: Major medical hubs include Istanbul, Bursa, and Antalya for specialized epilepsy management.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing a specialized neuropsychiatric center offers significant value beyond standard hospitals. For example, NP Istanbul Brain Hospital provides advanced therapeutic drug monitoring for approximately $2,400. This package includes unique sleep EEG diagnostics and airport transfers. This approach ensures medication levels are perfectly tuned to the patient's brain activity. Centers like Istanbul Florence Nightingale or Memorial Şişli offer JCI-accredited care with American-trained specialists.

Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team
Operation DBS. Ali Zirch is the best and he has a good team . Because setting up the equipment is as important process for patients as the operation to install it. Honestly, I can't imagine that such an operation can be done in Ukraine.... Of course, there are young and promising doctors. But there is no equipment.

Dr Sait has worked wonders
On the 18th he underwent surgery with a vagus nerve stimulator on the 25th and it was connected. Dr Sait has worked wonders. Daytime seizures are very rare but nighttime seizures have changed completely. I am 35 years old and so far only the first connection 0.25 paediatric dose and 5 more connections. Thank you to the neurologist Dr Yemmir who agreed to treat me. For all my years my encephalogram is finally normal. I am from abroad. I don't live in Istanbul. But I thank the whole clinic, all the doctors, all the interpreters, all the staff.

"But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc
I would like to express our satisfaction with the DBS operation, the stay in the hospital, which I dare to say at the world level. Dr. Ali Zirh is an absolute professional, precise, clear, concrete and above all very human. But I want to express my deepest and heartfelt thanks to our assistant from the first day, a month before we arrived at Mahmoud Kathab hospital, this young man is gifted with a huge heart, I think he was the person who made me choose MEDIPOL PARMERA etc. Ali Zarh. Last but not least, I am fascinated by the neurologist Dr. Basak and her team, who for 21 days took care of regulating the exact therapy and impulses of my husband. Our entire stay was reduced to the last detail for our benefit, to feel at home. We have not regretted it for a moment, that we chose MEDIPOL MEGA GROUP, thank you Mahmoud, you were born to help people like us!!! Please to reword Mahmoud Kathab ,he deserved a lot!!!

I do not have a very good impression of the clinic, because we went to do the operation at the agreed price of $ 4000 for the removal of tonsils, on arrival took 200 euros for consultation and said that the operation will cost 5900 euros.Prices are cosmic, it is better to choose another clinic, will be cheaper and not worse result.

I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve
I underwent Gamma Knife surgery on my trigeminal nerve at Medical Park Clinic and I would like to express my huge gratitude to all the medical staff and especially to the professor who performed the procedure. The operation was difficult, as it involved the trigeminal nerve and there was a risk of injury to nearby nerves. However, thanks to the professionalism and high qualifications of the professor, everything went well. He performed the procedure with jewellery precision, minimising possible risks and ensuring an excellent result. The Medical Park clinic also impressed with its high level of service, attentive attitude to patients and modern technological base. I felt in safe hands from the moment of consultation to the end of the rehabilitation period. I would recommend this clinic and especially the professor to anyone who needs treatment related to trigeminal nerve. Thank you for your work and care!

The professionalism of the doctors is top notch
The professionalism of the doctors is top notch. The availability of modern equipment is attractive. The medical staff is attentive and responsive to patients. Excellent work of the international department in terms of logistics and translators, which allows you to concentrate as much as possible on the diagnosis and communication with doctors. Availability of separate rooms per patient during hospitalization. Ensuring adequate prices for hotel rooms. In simple words: the transfer operates from the airport to the hotel and back, daily to the clinic and back to the hotel. There was always a translator with us at the clinic who took us where we needed to go. We received professional medical care.
In this section I would like to note the excellent work of the translator Ayla. A wonderful young woman who exudes confidence, calmness and positivity.
I wish all translators were like Ayla).

FAQ about Medication treatment for epilepsy in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which medications are most commonly used for epilepsy in Turkey?

Neurologists in Turkey commonly prescribe levetiracetam, valproic acid, and carbamazepine as primary treatments for epilepsy. Modern facilities like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital and Medipol Mega University Hospital utilize these antiseizure medications alongside advanced diagnostics to tailor treatment plans for both pediatric and adult patients.

  • First-line medications: Levetiracetam and valproic acid are standard for initial monotherapy in Turkish clinics.
  • Focal seizure care: Carbamazepine remains the primary choice for focal seizures due to proven efficacy.
  • Refractory cases: Specialists often introduce lamotrigine or topiramate when initial drug therapies prove insufficient.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics use therapeutic drug monitoring and sleep EEG to optimize precise medication dosages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many countries move toward newer drugs, Turkish neurologists often favor traditional options like carbamazepine and valproate. These medications represent up to 70% of public hospital prescriptions. For international patients, choosing specialized private centers like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital provides access to newer, thought-focused medicine protocols not always standard in smaller regional facilities.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight that medications like valproate and carbamazepine are highly affordable and widely available in city pharmacies. Many recommend carrying a doctor’s letter from home to ensure seamless brand or generic matching by Turkish pharmacists.

How can a foreigner get a prescription for epilepsy medicine in Turkey?

Foreigners must obtain a Turkish prescription from a local licensed neurologist to buy epilepsy medication, as foreign scripts are not accepted. Public and private hospitals, including JCI-accredited facilities like Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital or Anadolu Medical Center, provide consultations for diagnosis and medication management.

  • Medical documentation: Bring original packaging and doctor letters for diagnosis and dosage confirmation.
  • Neurology consultation: Private hospitals like Medipol Mega University Hospital offer faster English-speaking appointments.
  • Generic names: Identify the active ingredient, as brand names often differ in Turkey.
  • Controlled substances: Strictly regulated drugs like Diazepam require a specific `green prescription` (yeşil reçete).

Bookimed Expert Insight: While a simple refill consultation starts around $500, most top-tier neurologists in Istanbul require a fresh EEG or blood test for new foreign patients. Clinics like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital specialize in drug monitoring, ensuring your dosage remains therapeutic based on real-time brain function measurements.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend skipping public hospital queues by booking private appointments through apps. Bringing empty medication bottles and a translated doctor’s letter significantly speeds up the process with local neurologists.

Can I bring my own epilepsy medication when traveling to Turkey?

You can bring up to a 3-month supply of epilepsy medication into Turkey for personal use. Travelers must carry a valid original prescription and a specialist medical report, preferably in English, detailing the diagnosis, specific medication names, and required dosages to satisfy customs regulations.

  • Documentation: Carry an original prescription and a doctor letter stating the medical necessity.
  • Packaging: Keep all pills in original, labeled pharmacy containers to avoid legal delays.
  • Storage: Pack medications in carry-on luggage for immediate access and to prevent loss.
  • Controlled substances: Check with a Turkish Consulate if carrying phenobarbital or benzodiazepines before travel.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While common medications like levetiracetam are widely available, Turkey is a leader in advanced neurophysiology. Clinics like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital use thought-focused medicine and brain function mapping for complex cases. If you stay over 2 weeks, getting a local backup prescription from a JCI-accredited facility ensures continuous care.

Patient Consensus: Patients recommend bringing slightly more than the needed supply for the trip duration. Most find Istanbul airport customs routine, but emphasize keeping prescriptions visible and medications in original bottles for a smooth experience.

Are epilepsy medications available over-the-counter (OTC) in Turkey?

Epilepsy medications are not available over-the-counter in Turkey. The Turkish pharmaceutical market is strictly regulated by the Ministry of Health. You must have a valid prescription from a licensed physician, preferably a neurologist, to obtain anti-epileptic drugs at any local pharmacy.

  • Prescription requirement: Specialized neurological drugs require a Turkish-issued prescription for legal purchase.
  • Controlled substances: Rescue medications like benzodiazepines are heavily monitored and require specific red-list prescriptions.
  • Customs protocols: Travelers should carry original packaging alongside a translated doctor note for customs.
  • Medical refills: Use private hospitals in Istanbul or Ankara for faster access to new prescriptions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many travelers expect to show a foreign prescription, Turkish pharmacists increasingly require a local doctor entry into the national electronic system. Clinics like NP Istanbul Brain Hospital provide comprehensive diagnostic sessions starting at $500 that include therapeutic drug monitoring. This ensures your local prescription matches your current physiological needs rather than just duplicating an old dosage.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize bringing a 3-month supply from home to avoid immediate stress. Most report that while English-speaking neurologists are accessible in major cities, pharmacies in rural areas rarely dispense anticonvulsants without local documentation.
