The biggest disappointment was the clinic itself. I have no complaints about the doctor or the staff; they were professional and attentive. However, the conditions of my stay were simply awful, and this, unfortunately, completely overshadowed all the positive impressions I had of the medical staff’s work. It’s very disappointing. No matter how good the doctor is, the environment you find yourself in plays a huge role in the whole process. Ultimately, despite the team’s competence, I cannot give a high overall rating due to the state of the clinic, which made the whole experience extremely negative.

FAQ about Obstetrics and Gynecology in Thailand

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What specialized gynecological treatments are available in Thailand?

Thailand offers advanced gynecological care through JCI-accredited facilities specializing in reproductive technology, minimally invasive surgery, and cosmetic gynecology. Patients access sophisticated treatments like robotic-assisted myomectomy, PRP ovarian rejuvenation, and complex oncology staging. These centers integrate modern diagnostic tools like 4D ultrasound and hysteroscopy for precise treatment planning.

  • Fertility treatments: Advanced IVF, ICSI, and PGT are provided by specialists like Dr. Phattaraphum Phophong.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic techniques for fibroids and cysts ensure faster patient recovery.
  • Cosmetic gynecology: Specialized clinics offer hymenoplasty, vaginal repair, and laser rejuvenation for functional goals.
  • Oncological care: Comprehensive surgical staging and specialized oncology surgery are available at large medical hubs.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Bangkok has become a global leader in ambulatory gynecological care. Prime Fertility Clinic is the 6th in the world to earn JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation. This specialized focus allows for higher success rates in reproductive procedures compared to general hospitals. Patients should look for clinics with this specific accreditation for the most streamlined fertility journeys.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that fertility clinics in Bangkok provide a high level of care at significantly lower costs than in the West. It is helpful to verify the surgeon's registration with the Thai Medical Council and confirm English proficiency before traveling.

What should I expect during a gynecological exam in Thailand?

A gynecological exam in Thailand follows international protocols at JCI-accredited facilities. Patients receive initial screenings for blood pressure and weight before changing into a medical sarong. The visit includes a pelvic ultrasound, physical breast exam, and consultation with a specialist like Dr. Phattaraphum Phophong.

  • Standard screening: Vital signs and weight are measured by nursing staff before the exam.
  • Exam attire: Clinics provide private spaces to change into a medical gown or sarong.
  • Clinical components: Expect a speculum exam, Pap smear, and a bimanual pelvic check for organs.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Many check-up packages include transvaginal or abdominal ultrasounds for uterine health.
  • Staffing protocols: A female nurse is always present as a chaperone during your procedure.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai private hospitals excel in high-speed diagnostics. Hospitals like Intrarat or Bumrungrad often deliver general exam findings immediately. This efficiency is possible because facilities with 100,000+ annual patients maintain large on-site labs. If you need a biopsy or Pap smear, results typically take 7 days, but common ultrasound findings are explained on the spot.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that exams are quick, often taking under 20 minutes. It is helpful to wear loose clothing and bring a passport for registration.

Where can medical tourists find reputable women’s health centers in Thailand?

Medical tourists find reputable women's health centers in Bangkok through JCI-accredited hospitals like Bumrungrad International and Prime Fertility Clinic. These centers offer comprehensive services including robotic surgery, maternal-fetal medicine, and advanced reproductive technology. Specialized clinics also provide focused care for menopause and gynecological oncology.

  • Clinic credentials: Bumrungrad International Hospital holds JCI and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA).
  • Expert specialists: Dr. Phattaraphum Phophong specializes in laparoscopic surgery and infertility treatments.
  • Fertility focus: Prime Fertility Clinic is JCI-accredited for ambulatory care and reproductive medicine.
  • Technology: Centers like Wansiri Hospital utilize digitized medical operations and advanced technology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows a clear distinction between multi-disciplinary hubs and specialized boutiques. Large hospitals like Bumrungrad handle 1,000,000+ patients annually, making them ideal for complex oncology. In contrast, Prime Fertility Clinic serves 4,000 patients yearly, offering a more intimate environment for reproductive treatments.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the value of virtual consultations to verify treatment plans before flying. They also recommend documenting all follow-up protocols and complication policies in writing before traveling.

How do private and public Thai hospitals compare for women’s care?

Private Thai hospitals offer immediate access to English-speaking specialists and luxury amenities. Public facilities provide high-quality medical care at significantly lower costs but often involve long waits. Most international patients choose private centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital for personalized birth plans and specialized gynecological surgeries.

  • Waiting times: Private hospitals offer same-day consultations. Public centers often require waiting several hours.
  • Language support: Private facilities provide fluent English-speaking staff. Public hospitals mainly use Thai language.
  • Maternity costs: Childbirth in private sectors ranges from $2,600 to $4,000.
  • Accommodations: Private hospitals offer hotel-like suites. Public wards are typically shared with other patients.
  • Doctor choice: Patients in private clinics select their specific surgeon or obstetrician personally.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that specialized centers like Prime Fertility Clinic achieve JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation, a rare global standard. While large hospitals handle high volumes, these boutique clinics often provide more focused expertise in reproductive medicine. Patients seeking advanced laparoscopic surgery should note that many top specialists, like Dr. Phattaraphum Phophong, maintain active roles in both elite private hospitals and leading university medical schools.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while public hospitals are medically competent, the language barrier and lack of privacy can be challenging. Most recommend private facilities for a VIP-like experience, especially when requesting specific procedures like epidurals or elective C-sections.

Which hospitals are considered the best for Obstetrics and Gynecology in Thailand?

Thailand's leading hospitals for obstetrics and gynecology include Bumrungrad International Hospital, Samitivej Sukhumvit, and Prime Fertility Clinic. These facilities hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. They offer advanced maternal-fetal medicine, robotic-assisted surgeries, and specialized reproductive care for international patients.

  • Clinic credentials: Bumrungrad International Hospital ranks among Newsweek's world's best hospitals.
  • Specialized care: Prime Fertility Clinic is a JCI-accredited standalone center for reproductive medicine.
  • Surgical expertise: Intrarat Hospital performs a high volume of laparoscopic gynecological surgeries.
  • Maternity focus: Navamin 9 Hospital provides comprehensive mother and child care services.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that specialized clinics like Prime Fertility Clinic often achieve higher efficiency in reproductive cases. While larger centers like Bumrungrad handle over 1 million patients annually, these smaller, JCI-accredited boutiques focus exclusively on gynecology. This specialization often results in streamlined diagnostic timelines and more personalized attention for fertility patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it's important to confirm English-speaking staff availability before booking. Many travelers highlight that hospitals like Bumrungrad and Samitivej offer seamless delivery experiences and comprehensive postpartum recovery packages.

What fertility treatments and advanced procedures are available for international patients?

International patients in Thailand access advanced treatments like IVF, ICSI, and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). Facilities like Prime Fertility Clinic and Bumrungrad International Hospital offer JCI-accredited care. Specialized options include PESA and TESE for male infertility and PRP ovarian rejuvenation for enhanced success.

  • Core ART: IVF and ICSI are standard for overcoming various infertility factors.
  • Surgical sperm retrieval: PESA and TESE procedures address severe cases of male infertility.
  • Genetic screening: PGT screenings identify chromosomal abnormalities in embryos before the transfer.
  • Advanced gynecology: Clinics perform laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery for fibroids and cysts.
  • Ovarian rejuvenation: PRP and PRGF treatments help improve ovarian function and egg quality.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thailand's top fertility centers, such as Prime Fertility Clinic, are among only 6 in the world to achieve JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation. This high volume of international cases leads to specialized expertise in PGT-A and PGT-M testing. Patients often find that these specialized labs handle more complex genetic screening cases than many general hospitals in Western countries.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that while high success rates are a major draw, they must plan for a 2-week stay during stimulation cycles. It is important to confirm upfront if frozen embryos can be shipped internationally for future use.

Is the quality of OB-GYN care in Thailand comparable to Western standards?

High-end OB-GYN care in Thailand meets and often exceeds Western standards in technology and patient experience. Leading private hospitals hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Many Thai specialists complete advanced fellowships in the US or UK. Facilities offer rapid access to specialized procedures without the wait times common in Western public systems.

  • Accreditation: Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital hold JCI and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA).
  • Specialist expertise: Associate Professor Dr. Phattaraphum Phophong received specialized prenatal genetics training at UCL, UK.
  • Advanced technology: Clinics utilize robotic surgery, 3D ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS).
  • High volume: Bumrungrad International Hospital treats over 1 million patients annually from 190 different countries.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai fertility centers show a unique commitment to international quality benchmarks. Prime Fertility Clinic is one of only 6 standalone clinics globally to achieve JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation. This trend suggests that smaller, specialized centers in Bangkok often provide more focused, high-standard care than even some large Western general hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients often describe the private hospital experience as having 5-star hotel vibes with significantly better personalization than in the US. Many note that the combination of US-trained doctors and zero wait times makes complex procedures like C-sections feel much more seamless.

What specialized treatments are available for international patients seeking reproductive or gynecological care?

International patients in Thailand access advanced treatments like IVF with ICSI, egg freezing, and robotic-assisted surgeries. Specialized care includes laparoscopic hysterectomy and endometriosis excision at JCI-accredited facilities. Expert gynecologists also provide bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and complex myomectomy for fibroids.

  • Fertility solutions: IVF and ICSI cycles include preimplantation genetic testing for chromosomal health.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Laparoscopic techniques for hysterectomies and fibroid removal ensure faster recovery times.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Comprehensive female check-ups combine hormonal profiling, hysteroscopy, and high-resolution ultrasound.
  • Specialized rejuvenation: Clinics offer plateletrich plasma (PRP) ovarian rejuvenation and bioidentical hormone therapy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a high concentration of JCI-accredited ambulatory centers in Bangkok, such as Prime Fertility Clinic. These specialized facilities often manage 4,000+ patients annually, focusing exclusively on reproductive health. This high volume allows doctors to refine specific protocols for international patients that general hospitals might not offer.

Patient Consensus: Patients frequently highlight the resort-like recovery suites in Bangkok hospitals and the efficiency of skipping long insurance wait times. Many note that total costs for complex surgeries like laparoscopic excision remain significantly lower than in the US or Australia.

Are there pre-pregnancy health screening packages for couples visiting Thailand?

International-standard hospitals in Thailand offer comprehensive pre-pregnancy health screening packages for couples. These programs typically perform genetic risk assessments, infectious disease testing, and reproductive health evaluations. Many facilities like Prime Fertility Clinic and Bumrungrad International Hospital maintain JCI accreditation for these services.

  • Core diagnostics: Blood typing, CBC, and screening for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B/C.
  • Genetic testing: Hemoglobin typing for Thalassemia is standard due to high local prevalence.
  • Female screening: Pelvic ultrasound, Rubella IgG immunity tests, and hormonal profiles are typically included.
  • Male health: Semen analysis is a common feature in fertility-focused preconception check-up packages.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers like Bumrungrad International Hospital, which serves 1,000,000 patients annually, often provide the most efficient journey. Their integrated labs allow couples to complete complex genetic and hormonal screenings in a single day. This efficiency is rare in smaller clinics and is vital for international visitors on tight schedules.

Patient Consensus: Couples note these screenings are very affordable compared to Western options. Patients highlight that asking for a 'pre-marital' health check often covers everything needed for preconception at a better bundled rate.

Are there comprehensive maternity packages for international patients?

Comprehensive maternity packages in Thailand provide fixed-cost solutions for international patients undergoing childbirth. These bundles typically range from $2,600 to $4,000. They cover prenatal check-ups, delivery fees, and hospital stays in private suites. Newborn vaccinations and metabolic screenings are standard inclusions in these plans.

  • Hospital stay: Includes 1–2 nights for vaginal births or 2–4 nights for C-sections.
  • Medical team: Coverage for obstetricians, pediatricians, and anesthesia fees during the delivery.
  • Newborn care: Initial pediatric exams, vitamin K injections, and essential blood screenings.
  • Support services: Assistance with birth certificates and multi-lingual translation for international patients.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals with high patient volumes, such as Bumrungrad International Hospital, often provide the most stable package pricing. Clinics like Prime Fertility Clinic, which hold JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation, signify a specialized focus on safety standards. Choosing facilities in Bangkok ensures access to the highest concentration of UK and US-trained specialists.

Patient Consensus: Patients advise confirming English proficiency of the nursing staff before booking. They also note it is wise to budget extra for potential NICU stays, as these are rarely covered in standard bundles.

Are obstetricians and gynaecologists at leading hospitals in Thailand professionally qualified and fluent in English?

Obstetricians and gynaecologists at leading Thai hospitals are highly qualified. They frequently hold international certifications and British or American fellowships. Specialists at major Bangkok centres commonly speak fluent English. Many clinicians hold dual Thai and UK medical licences or train at institutions like Mahidol University.

  • International credentials: Doctors often hold fellowships from UK or Singaporean institutions for specialised surgical training.
  • Specific languages: Several specialists like Dr Waranya Sirithanasarn and Dr Nivit Karla speak fluent English.
  • Hospital standards: Leading facilities such as Bumrungrad and Prime Fertility Clinic maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation.
  • Regional recognition: Specialists frequently present at global events, including the Fertility Society of Australia Annual Conference.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai medical training is rigorous. Top specialists often complete second degrees abroad in niche fields like prenatal genetics. For example, Associate Professor Phattaraphum Phophong holds an M.Sc. from University College London. Patients should look for 'Diploma of the Thai Subboard' credentials. This indicates specialised expertise beyond general gynaecology.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while hospitals advertise English support, they should confirm the specialist can explain procedures directly. They suggest getting written treatment plans in English before travel. This helps ensure clear consent for surgery or fertility care.

Are gynaecologists in Thailand experienced in performing robotic-assisted surgical procedures for fibroids?

Gynaecologists in Thailand are highly experienced in performing robotic-assisted myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids. Specialist centres in Bangkok use the da Vinci Xi system. These robotic platforms allow surgeons to remove complex fibroids through tiny incisions. This helps preserve the uterus and healthy tissue.

  • Technological precision: Specialised units at Bumrungrad International Hospital use robotic systems for complex pelvic surgery.
  • Senior expertise: Dr Seree Teerapong at Intrarat Hospital holds certification in laparoscopic and reproductive surgery.
  • Clinical volume: Intrarat Hospital treats 100,000 patients annually and houses over 200 experienced physicians.
  • International standards: Major hospitals like Bumrungrad International Hospital carry JCI and GHA accreditations for surgical safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many gynaecologists perform fibroid surgery. However, patients should look for those with sub-board diplomas in reproductive medicine. Doctors like Assoc. Prof. Phattaraphum Phophong combine surgical skill with fertility expertise. This focus helps preserve the ability to conceive after the fibroids are removed.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to ask about specific surgical volumes. They suggest confirming the exact robotic platform used. They also recommend requesting recovery timelines for your specific case in Thailand.

Can I obtain a professional second opinion for endometriosis management from a specialist in Thailand?

Australian patients can obtain professional second opinions for endometriosis in Thailand. Specialists at JCI-accredited facilities such as Prime Fertility Clinic and Bumrungrad International Hospital provide expert reviews. Consultations include diagnostic assessments and personalised treatment plans. These plans cover complex laparoscopic or hysteroscopic conservative surgeries.

  • Expert practitioners: Specialists like Dr Poonkiat Punyamitr hold international certifications in reproductive medicine.
  • Specialised diagnostics: Clinics offer ultrasound, biopsy, and hysteroscopy to confirm deep-infiltrating endometriosis.
  • Clinical pathways: Experts provide written management plans covering medical therapy or surgical excision.
  • Quality standards: Prime Fertility Clinic holds JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation, a major quality signal.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai specialists often combine gynaecology with specialised fertility training. Dr Tanut Jerachotechueantaveechai at Bangkok Center Clinic participated in the Fertility Society of Australia Annual Conference. This shared clinical understanding helps Australian patients integrate Thai second opinions with their local GP's care plan.

Patient Consensus: Patients find second opinions most effective when they upload imaging and operative notes early. They value specialists who explain surgical excision techniques and fertility impacts in clear English. This helps them coordinate with doctors back in Australia.

What is the typical schedule for prenatal visits when receiving antenatal care in Thailand?

Antenatal care in Thailand follows a standard frequency to monitor maternal and foetal health. Routine visits occur every four weeks until the 28th week of gestation. Frequency then increases to every two to three weeks until week 32. This is followed by weekly check-ups until delivery.

  • First appointment: Occurs once pregnancy is suspected. This involves a physical exam and blood tests.
  • Gestation weeks 0–28: Appointments are scheduled monthly. This allows for regular monitoring of development.
  • Gestation weeks 28–32: Visits increase to every fortnight. Specialists track foetal growth more closely.
  • Gestation weeks 32–40: Weekly appointments start. These final checks focus on preparation for childbirth.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai clinics often have in-house technology. Prime Fertility Clinic has JCI Ambulatory Care Accreditation. Navamin 9 Hospital and Bumrungrad International Hospital also hold JCI certification. These facilities provide high-standard obstetrics care for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Thailand find the initial consultation very thorough. They appreciate that specialists often have international training from the UK or US. Seamless support and quick diagnostic results make the frequent schedule feel manageable.

What facilities are available for labour and birth at top hospitals in Thailand?

Top hospitals in Thailand provide private birthing suites, neonatal intensive care, and 24/7 specialist teams. Facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Navamin 9 Hospital offer JCI-accredited maternity care. These centres combine modern obstetric theatre technology with hotel-like amenities for family-centred births.

  • Maternity suites: Private rooms designed for comfort and family presence during labour.
  • Neonatal care: Level 4 NICU facilities available for premature or high-risk newborn support.
  • Pain management: Full access to anaesthesia and epidural blocks administered by specialist anaesthetists.
  • Advanced safety: Operating theatres meet Clean Room standards with high-quality air filtration systems.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Thai hospitals often separate maternity services into dedicated centres. For example, Navamin 9 Hospital has a specific mother and child centre. This approach helps patients avoid general hospital traffic. High patient volumes at major hubs like Intrarat Hospital mean clinical teams maintain sharp emergency response skills. This facility treats 100,000 patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Delivering in Thailand feels like staying in a hotel rather than a hospital. Patients often mention the helpful breastfeeding support. They also appreciate the reassurance of having specialists available at any hour.

Does the hospital assist with medical visa extensions if a longer stay is required for treatment in Thailand?

Thai hospitals assist with medical visa extensions by providing required clinical documentation. International patient departments at facilities like Bumrungrad International Hospital and Prime Fertility Clinic issue medical reports. These documents confirm a patient's condition and the medical necessity for an extended stay. This ensures the patient can remain in Thailand for treatment.

  • Documentation support: Hospitals provide doctor letters and treatment plans for extensions.
  • Clinical justification: Reports specify why recovery or surgery requires more time.
  • Extension duration: Thai immigration often grants extensions up to 90 days.
  • Administrative assistance: International desks help prepare papers but do not visit immigration.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centres like Intrarat Hospital treat 100,000 patients annually. They have dedicated administrative teams for international paperwork. For obstetrics cases involving childbirth or surgery, request these letters early. Doing this at least 7 days before a visa expires is best. This allows the medical team to document specific follow-up needs accurately for immigration officers.

Patient Consensus: Patients note Thai hospitals provide essential medical letters. However, they do not handle the immigration application end-to-end. It is vital to confirm document timelines early. Patients should avoid waiting until discharge day to request paperwork.
