I can't recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances
I highly recommend Florence Nightingale Hospital to anyone that is about to undergo a medical journey. For us, everything happened so suddenly. From the moment we uploaded files and made our request on Bookimed, Aliser as the International Coordinator was immediately on hand to support us - incredibly attentively and with compassion. He was supportive to our needs, and at a moment’s notice jumped onto WhatsApp calls to answer any questions and went above and beyond to give us the information we needed. We were navigating significant timezone issues (based in Hong Kong, whereas the patient, father-in-law, was in Albania) but we didn’t feel this burden. We had lots of specific needs that were met, including jumping onto a Video call with Professor Yildiray Yuzer, to answer questions directly. We weren’t the easiest of patients with lots of reassurance needed, but Aliser was helpful in being able to put himself in the position of the patient and being on our side to help us. We were incredibly satisfied by the level of support that we received - especially in comparison to other hospitals in Istanbul. I can’t recommend Aliser and the level of support we received enough - especially in such difficult circumstances. Once we arrived in Istanbul we appreciated being met with a transfer, and recommendations were made for accommodation to ensure that we were comfortable. Throughout our consultations, we most definitely felt that the Florence team was earnest - putting patient health first, above profit, which we appreciated. During the hospital stay itself, we were also blown away by the compassion of the nurses and support staff in our ward. Something that was so challenging, was punctuated throughout with so many moments of warmth and support. In addition, the facilities, hospital rooms, and cleanliness and hygiene at Florence were fantastic, we couldn’t have wished for a better stay. Most importantly, we were reassured by the experience and expertise of Professor Yuzer and his team. Any patient can trust that they are in expert hands. It’s also helpful to see that these skills are supported by a genuine empathy for the patient. Ultimately, the procedure was a success (we hope that positive health outcome continues!). It feels surreal having embarked on the journey, however, I’m incredibly satisfied with the service, support and expertise of the hospital. There’s nothing I can think of to improve!
About Bookimed service
The bookimed team, in addition to Florence, were incredibly supportive and compassionate particularly in the first weeks as we sought to navigate options and make decisions. The customer support team regularly checked in on our progress via whatsapp, and you could see that they had medical backgrounds and were incredibly competent. It felt fantastic to have their support - bookimed is an incredible platform.

It’s still too early to give a full review as the procedure hasn’t been done. But the hospital is fantastic. Dr Polat is the very best, he will sit down and talk about anything we wanted or needed. The whole staff is exceptional. More to follow.

FAQ about treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Why is Istanbul a popular destination for a liver transplant?

Istanbul is a top global transplant hub for living-donor liver surgeries. The city has high surgical volumes and JCI-accredited hospitals. Patients get fast access to specialists whose success rates reach 93.5% — all at a much lower cost than in Western countries.

  • Surgeon expertise: Top specialists like Dr. Ayhan Dinсkan have performed over 1,000 successful liver transplants.
  • Clinical standards: Hospitals like Memorial Sisli were among the first in the world to earn JCI accreditation.
  • Recipient recovery: Packages usually include 15–23 days of hospitalization, with 5 days in the ICU.
  • Donor safety: Dedicated living-donor programs provide donor stays of 7–10 days with expert monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While people often come to Istanbul for lower costs, the real advantage is the length of stay. Leading clinics like Istinye University Liv Hospital include up to 90 days of combined hospital and hotel stay. That extended monitoring period helps manage early graft function and keeps patients stable before they fly home.

Patient Consensus: Patients say lower costs and faster treatment are life-changing. They often highlight the warmth of the nursing staff. Many also feel reassured by having direct video consultations with surgeons before traveling.

Can international patients receive a deceased-donor liver transplant in Istanbul?

International patients generally cannot receive a deceased-donor liver transplant in Istanbul. Turkish law restricts the national cadaveric waiting list to citizens and registered residents. Foreign patients must bring their own living donor. The donor is usually a relative within the fourth degree of kinship.

  • Living donor requirement: International patients must have their own compatible living donor for the procedure.
  • Legal verification: Embassies and ethics committees must authenticate the donor-recipient relationship.
  • Typical hospital stay: Recipients typically stay in the hospital about 15 days, with 5 days in the ICU.
  • Success rates: Leading Istanbul centers like Memorial Şişli Hospital report a transplant success rate of up to 90%.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While clinics offer living donor transplants, stay requirements vary significantly. For instance, Istinye University Liv Hospital includes up to 90 days of hospital and hotel stay in the package. This extended stay is vital. International patients need thorough monitoring before flying home.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that bringing a family donor is the only reliable route. They also stress the importance of VIP transfers and language assistance. These services help with the complex legal and medical paperwork.

What are the legal and medical requirements for a living donor?

Living liver donors must be at least 18 years old. Donors also need a compatible blood type and excellent physical and mental health. The decision must be voluntary and made without pressure. It is finalized through informed consent after a rigorous medical screening in Istanbul.

  • Donor age: Candidates must be 18 to 60 years old for optimal outcomes.
  • Medical fitness: Candidates must not have chronic conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or severe heart disease.
  • Organ function: Baseline liver function must be strong enough to support regeneration after donation.
  • Psychosocial health: Evaluation confirms emotional readiness and a stable support system after surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Istanbul hospitals like Memorial Sisli and Istinye University Liv Hospital have high success rates. This is because their surgeons have performed over 1,000 transplants. Dr. Ayhan Dinсkan is one example of such a surgeon. High volume makes teams skilled at matching donors who will recover quickly. As a result, donors are often discharged in just 5–7 days.

Patient Consensus: Donors emphasize that screening is far more thorough than simple blood matching. Donors often advise stopping alcohol and improving core strength months before surgery. This preparation helps handle the physical demands of early walking during recovery.

What is the success/survival rate for liver transplants in Istanbul?

Centers in Istanbul report liver transplant success rates of 90% to 93.5% for living donor procedures. One-year survival rates typically reach 93%. Five-year outcomes average around 82%. These figures rival benchmarks in the United States and Western Europe.

  • Living donor success: JCI-accredited facilities report success rates between 90% and 95%.
  • Long-term survival: Five-year survival rates generally range from 72% to 82% post-transplant.
  • Surgeon expertise: Surgeons in Istanbul have performed over 1,000 successful liver transplants.
  • Hospital stay: Recipients stay about 15 days, including 5 days in intensive care.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Raw survival data is impressive. But donor safety is the true hallmark of Istanbul’s top clinics. Specialized centers like Istinye University Liv Hospital report a 91.7% donor organ acceptance rate. This reflects a high level of precision. That precision extends to pre-operative screening and the surgical execution for living donors.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that success goes beyond survival figures. They highlight the importance of team experience. They also stress the need for compassionate post-operative care during the long recovery period.

How long do the patient and donor need to stay in Istanbul?

Liver transplant recipients typically stay in Istanbul for 4 to 6 weeks. Donors need 2 to 3 weeks. Recipient hospitalization lasts 15 to 25 days, including 5 days in the ICU. Donors usually stay in the hospital for 7 to 10 days.

  • Recipient stay: 4 to 6 weeks in Istanbul for graft stabilization and medication monitoring.
  • Donor stay: 2 to 3 weeks in Istanbul, until cleared by the team.
  • Hospital duration: Recipients stay 15 to 25 days, donors 7 to 10 days.
  • Package inclusions: Some clinics like Group Florence Nightingale Hospitals bundle 23 nights of hotel stay.
  • Monitoring period: Packages at Istinye University Liv Hospital allow up to 90 days for monitoring.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Basic packages cover 15 days. However, experienced teams like those at Istinye University Liv Hospital often include up to 90 days of total stay. This buffer is crucial for recipients. Managing early immunosuppressive medication requires frequent, precise lab adjustments. These adjustments are easier to handle locally.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that staying for a full month is essential for stability before flying. Leaving too early often leads to travel fatigue. It can also cause complications with swelling or mobility during international flights.
