the staff, the surgeon, and the clinic were exemplary
The procedure went smoothly. However, the representatives initially quoted a price, and upon my arrival, I had to pay a different amount than what had been communicated to me. Aside from this, everything went well: the staff, the surgeon, and the clinic were exemplary.

I really liked the clinic
I really liked the clinic. Logistics. Transfer. The doctors are competent. Competent. The equipment in the clinic is new and excellent. But the translators were very upset, it spoiled my impression of the clinic. This made me very sad! The quality of the translation was incompetent, poor, slow, disorganized, very often different information, they did not answer my questions and I had to ask the same question 5 times to get an answer or an appointment with the doctor. They made mistakes regarding the diagnosis. It is unacceptable . I advise you to pay attention to translators and pay attention to the quality of their work! This spoils the reputation of the clinic!

"I recommend to everyone, wizards work here - professionals in their field!"Categorized statements: About the doctor: "Easy to communicate, concise, it is immediately clear that the highest level specialist, after the examination, identified the problem and showed it on the MRI scan and explained what was to come
LIV Hospital services are very much in line with and in no way inferior to the world level, believe me, because due to health problems of my family, we had to see clinics in the USA, China, South Korea, Israel. From the very first call I felt great care for me as a loved one. Many thanks to Sabina, Nigina - coordinators / translators, they did a great job, we could contact them at any time of the day and they supported the patient with all their hearts. Please note that everything here is based on Turkish, only doctors can communicate in English. It can be seen how much Turkey has advanced and is self-sufficient. I am grateful to fate that I met the professor - neurosurgeon Chagatay Ozturk. Easy to communicate, concise, it is immediately clear that the highest level specialist, after the examination, identified the problem and showed it on the MRI scan and explained what was to come. An operation was performed to remove the hernia on L5-S1 and a titanium disc was installed. The atmosphere of the team was very favorable and cozy, there was a high level of coherence and discipline. The concern was such that I did not feel any pain or heaviness, although they say that the operation was not an easy one. On the second day after the operation, I already walked and on the sixth day I was already discharged. Finally I got rid of pain and sleepless nights over the years! I recommend to everyone, wizards work here - professionals in their field! Best regards, Gaziz Kissym Kazakhstan

I'll start my review with Bookimed. Indeed, the guys helped a lot, in particular, Anton, Barbara, Nazrin. From the moment I turned to them, they tirelessly contacted me and provided all third-party support. Meeting, doctor's consultation and after. Really guys thank you! We agreed with Anton that we would go for a consultation at Liv Hospital. Special thanks to you. Now for the Liv Hospital itself. We turned to this hospital with an MRI scan - signs of osteochondrosis of the thoracic spine. The central protrusion of the VTh3 - VTh4 disk and vertebral bodies with marginal suspensions, the height of the vertebral bodies is preserved. End plates of vertebral bodies with clear, even contours. In the vertebral bodies Th2 (10mm), Th5 (10mm), Th10 (23mm), Th11 (3mm) and L1 (5mm), round sections with hyper-intense T1 and T2 HI signal characteristics (hemangiomas) are determined. We were prescribed a doctor Chagatai Ozturk. From acquaintances, from reviews and after talking with the doctor, I realized that the doctor is quite a professional in his field. Pros: 1. Modern hospital 2. Attention to the patient is good. 3. Amiable doctor 4. Well done consultants. Cons: 1. Very, well, very expensive treatment in relation to other hospitals in Turkey. For example, Memorial, Azhibadem, Medicana 2. Careful attention to the patient is a maximum of 10-15 minutes. After this time has passed, it seems that the doctor has lost interest in you and begins to engage in others on his computer. (at least I noticed this in relation to us) 3. Does not give other variations of the treatment although this could be given. Since having looked at our MRI remotely, Liv hospital sent us an invoice, we expected that after a live examination, the doctor would offer us other treatment options. 4. The doctor is very honest with the patient. He directly told us that after the operation does not guarantee that we will return to our previous health and will feel like an 18 year old healthy person. I do not know how much this psychologically affects the patient. For example, it negatively affected us or not. 5. We were offered to have an operation the amount of which amounted to $ 23,000 plus treatment and stay in Turkey for 15 days would cost us all this about $ 30,000. For this amount we were offered in Israel and Germany, and in India 3 times cheaper. We asked for a breakdown of this amount, which is included here. Unfortunately, they said they could not give it. I could not understand why. Then we asked to give us a price for hemorrhage vertebroplasty, after a two-day wait they said $ 7,000, although other hospitals asked for $ 3,000- $ 3,500 for vertebroplasty, and after they found out that we would only do vertebroplasty, and we won’t do the spinal surgery, interest our person at the hospital completely disappeared and they did not contact us even though we were there about 10 days after consulting with them. So the next day we went to several other hospitals in Turkey and stayed at the Sisli Momorial Hospital. I want to note that the Memorial is no different from Liv Hospital in terms of modernity and attention to the patient. Doctors are very kind prices are acceptable, the neurosurgeon in whom we were an expert in their field listened without being lazy. We were able to ask him all the questions we were interested in, both during the consultation and after treatment, and he was in contact with us all the time before and after the radio frequency denervation that we had with him. Something like this. All health and goodness

"I recommend the clinic to everyone who is responsible for their health
Hello! Just recently returned from the clinic Liv Hospital. Thanks to the professor, Dr. Oztürk was given an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan. Very attentive staff and doctors, all at the highest level! Special thanks I want to say to the employees of Bookimed. The girls reacted very responsibly, called, clarified. It was very pleasant to work directly in the clinic with Llaala, who organized the hotel accommodation and directly supervised the entire process of my stay in the clinic. I recommend the clinic to everyone who is responsible for their health.

Expert Overview about Herniated disk Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What advanced surgical techniques are available in Turkey for herniated disks?

Turkey offers advanced spinal interventions like transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) and robotic-assisted surgeries using the Mazor X Stealth system. These minimally invasive procedures utilize incisions as small as 4mm. Patients often achieve 90% pain relief and can walk within 24 hours.

  • Endoscopic techniques: Surgeons use high-definition cameras for percutaneous cervical and lumbar discectomy.
  • Robotic precision: Systems like ExcelsiusGPS ensure 99% accuracy during complex spinal hardware placement.
  • Microscopic gold standard: Microsurgical anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) provides extreme surgical precision.
  • Non-surgical options: Plasma nucleoplasty and radiofrequency ablation offer relief without traditional open incisions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success rates for discectomies in Turkey are exceptionally high. For example, Dr. Cahit Kural at Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital maintains a 99.9% success rate. This level of precision is often supported by high patient volumes. High-capacity centers like Hisar Hospital Intercontinental serve over 250,000 patients annually. This allows surgeons to gain vast experience in complex, minimally invasive techniques.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the speed of recovery, noting they often walk the day after surgery and return home within a week. Some mention the importance of verifying that translators are available to ensure clear communication with the medical team.

What is the documented success rate and main risks of these procedures?

Herniated disk treatments in Turkey demonstrate success rates between 85% and 99.9% depending on the specific surgical approach. Procedures like microdiscectomy and endoscopic surgery are standard. Leading neurosurgeons maintain high safety profiles within JCI-accredited facilities. Most patients return to walking within two days.

  • Success rate: Documented 99.9% success for discectomy at specialized university hospitals.
  • Recovery timeframe: Patients typically achieve discharge within 6 days after titanium disc installation.
  • Major risks: Re-herniation occurs in 10% to 20% of cases within one year.
  • Clinical complications: Potential risks include infection, nerve numbness, or rare anesthesia-related issues.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many clinics highlight general success, the most reliable outcomes come from surgeons with high procedural volumes. For example, Dr. Cahit Kural at Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital has a 99.9% success rate. Choosing a specialist who performs over 500 surgeries yearly significantly ensures better long-term results.

Patient Consensus: Patients report immediate relief from long-term pain and emphasize the importance of getting an accurate MRI diagnosis. Many note that the ability to walk shortly after surgery feels life-changing.

What credentials or certifications should I look for when verifying a Turkish clinic or surgeon?

Verifying Turkish neurosurgeons requires confirming their Specialization Certificate in Brain and Nerve Surgery and Turkish Medical Association registration. Clinics must hold an International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate from the Ministry of Health. Tier-1 facilities often maintain Joint Commission International accreditation and academic affiliations with global institutions.

  • Clinic licensing: Confirm the Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate.
  • Surgeon boards: Seek Turkish Neurosurgical Society or European Association of Neurosurgical Societies members.
  • Facility safety: Prioritize Joint Commission International-accredited hospitals for standardized surgical safety protocols.
  • Clinical volume: Top centers like Anadolu Medical Center serve over 65,000 patients annually.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many focus on hospital names, surgeon-specific credentials provide higher security. Prof. Dr. Ilhan Elmaci was the first in Turkey accredited by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Deniz Konya completed a spine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Prioritizing doctors with Western fellowships or international board certifications typically ensures familiarity with the latest minimally invasive techniques.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while top-tier clinics provide excellent medical care, the quality of translation and coordination can vary significantly. They recommend confirming the specific surgeon's experience with MRI scans before arrival to ensure the treatment plan matches the initial quote.

What is included in a typical herniated-disk treatment package for international patients?

Standard herniated disk treatment packages in Turkey typically include the surgical procedure, general or local anesthesia, and diagnostic tests like ECG, chest X-rays, and blood work. Most bundles also cover 1–3 nights of hospitalization, VIP airport-clinic transfers, and a follow-up consultation within 7 days. Specialist fees for the neurosurgeon and anesthesiologist are included as standard.

  • Surgical components: Includes microdiscectomy, endoscopic surgery, or radiofrequency ablation techniques.
  • Diagnostic bundle: Covers pre-operative blood panels, biochemistry, ECG, and chest X-rays.
  • Hospital stay: Typically provides 1–2 nights in a private room with nursing care.
  • Logistics included: VIP transfers between the airport, hotel, and clinic are standard.
  • Language support: Personal coordinators or translators facilitate communication with medical staff.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a significant value gap between university hospitals and specialized centers regarding post-op recovery. For example, Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital includes full-board meals and a 3-night hotel stay in their $6,500 package. In contrast, many boutique clinics in Istanbul offer lower lead prices around $3,900 but exclude all hotel costs and meals, which can add $500–$800 to your final budget.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to confirm if the initial price quote includes the cost of specific implants or neuromonitoring. Many recommend bringing existing MRI scans to avoid paying for new imaging upon arrival at the clinic.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for herniated-disk surgery and follow-up?

Patients typically stay in Turkey for 7 to 10 days for herniated disk surgery. This timeframe allows for preoperative diagnostics, the surgical procedure, and post-operative recovery. Most travelers receive fit-to-fly clearance after a final follow-up examination 5 to 8 days post-operation.

  • Hospital stay: Expect 1 to 2 nights for minimally invasive microdiscectomy procedures.
  • Clinical observation: Complex cases or spinal fusions may require 3 to 5 hospital nights.
  • Follow-up timeline: Surgeons perform wound checks and physical exams 5 days after surgery.
  • Travel clearance: Full clearance for international flights usually occurs between days 7 and 10.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Choosing packages with built-in hotel stays simplified recovery for our patients. For example, Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital bundles 2 hospital nights with 3 hotel nights. This structured transition ensures professional monitoring remains accessible during the most critical 5-day post-op window.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the medical care is excellent, having a translator is vital since many staff members primarily speak Turkish. Those who underwent surgery at LIV Hospital emphasize that walking by the second day was key to their rapid discharge.

When can I walk, and how soon can I return to work after surgery?

Patients in Turkey typically start walking within 24 to 48 hours after herniated disc surgery. Desk-based work can often be resumed in 2 to 4 weeks. Physically demanding jobs usually require 6 to 12 weeks for a safe return to full activity.

  • Early mobilization: Most patients begin short walks within 24 hours to prevent blood clots.
  • Hospital discharge: Patients are often discharged after 1 to 2 days of clinical observation.
  • Desk work: Remote or office tasks are typical after 2 to 4 weeks of recovery.
  • Manual labor: Heavy lifting or construction work requires waiting at least 3 to 6 months.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish neurosurgery centers like Anadolu Medical Center or Lokman Hekim University Hospital favor minimally invasive microsurgery. These techniques allow for extremely short hospital stays of just 1 to 2 days. While patients often feel ready to work sooner, our data shows that the 99.9% success rates seen with surgeons like Dr. Cahit Kural depend on strictly avoiding heavy lifting for the first 6 weeks post-operation.

Patient Consensus: Patients report being encouraged to walk hospital corridors as early as the second day. While immediate pain relief is common, many note that having a dedicated translator helps manage the first few days of physical therapy sessions.

Is herniated-disk surgery always necessary?

Surgery for a herniated disk is not always necessary. Approximately 80% to 90% of cases improve with non-surgical treatments like physical therapy or medication. Doctors typically recommend 6 to 12 weeks of conservative care before considering surgical intervention for most patients.

  • Treatment success: Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital reports a 99.9% discectomy success rate.
  • Conservative approach: Most cases resolve naturally as the body reabsorbs displaced disk material.
  • Emergency indicators: Surgery is required for loss of bladder control or progressive weakness.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics use MRI and PET-CT to confirm if nerve compression requires surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often overlook non-surgical interventions like radiofrequency ablation or plasma nucleoplasty available in Turkey. Our data shows these procedures, offered at centers like Turan Turan Health Group, provide middle-ground options. They bridge the gap between physical therapy and invasive surgery for persistent pain.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while many discs heal with time and specific exercises, those who chose surgery often found immediate relief from years of debilitating leg pain. Many suggest getting a second opinion via MRIs before traveling to ensure the procedure is truly required.
