I like how fast and easy it was from the start. The surgical facility was small but worked fine. I did not like the post op care. The night nurse was terrible. Her patients were not a priority. Post op care was not made clear. I would have preferred more detailed instructions on after care. I was left guessing about bandages, sprays, medications and scar treatment. Doctor repaired a hernia, of which I was grateful, but would have preferred to have price list in case this occurred so I could have been prepared financially. I felt like price was just made up. So I don't know if I was overcharged. I liked Mexicali as it was a nice quiet clean town. All in all experience was not bad and the price was affordable.

FAQ about treatment in Mexico

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is it safe to get liposuction in Cancún?

Safe liposuction in Cancún depends on a CMCPER-certified surgeon and an accredited medical center. Top facilities like Riviera Institute For Plastic Surgery maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) standards. As a result, their safety protocols match those in the United States and Canada.

  • Surgeon credentials: Verify the surgeon’s certification from the Mexican Council of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (CMCPER).
  • Facility standards: Choose clinics accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
  • Advanced techniques: Skilled surgeons use internal ultrasonic liposculpture and ultrasound-assisted liposuction for better results.
  • Safety volume: Specialists like Dr. Víctor Samano treat over 500 patients per year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients care about low cost. But safety in Cancún often depends on the clinic’s infrastructure. For example, Riviera Institute For Plastic Surgery handles over 350 patients a year. It also employs surgeons recognized by Forbes. That kind of high-volume expertise can reduce procedural risks. Always verify the clinic is in a full-service hospital for emergency care.

Patient Consensus: Patients say long-term satisfaction depends on personally checking board certifications. Don’t just rely on clinic claims. Patients recommend arranging post-operative assistance and staying locally for at least 10 days. This allows a safe recovery before flying.

What are the risks of liposuction in Cancún?

Liposuction in Cancún comes with standard surgical risks. These include infection, uneven contours, and anesthesia reactions. Safety is high in facilities with Joint Commission International accreditation. It's even higher when surgeons have certification from the Mexican Council of Plastic Surgery. They should also hold international memberships, like in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

  • Surgeon credentials: Make sure your surgeon is certified by the Mexican Council of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Accredited facilities: Top centers like Riviera Institute hold Joint Commission International and ASPS accreditations.
  • Surgical side effects: Potential issues include temporary fluid accumulation, bruising, or changes in skin sensation.
  • Travel considerations: Patients should not fly right after the procedure. This helps prevent blood clots and other serious complications.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Cancún clinics often have highly skilled surgeons recognized by global organizations. For example, Dr. Nain Maldonado at Riviera Institute was named Mexico's best plastic surgeon by Forbes. Choosing a clinic with these credentials can greatly lower the risk of unsatisfactory results.

Patient Consensus: Patients report feeling confident when they choose surgeons with documented international training. They also stress that following the medical team's recovery instructions is vital. This helps prevent fluid buildup.

How long do I need to stay in Cancún after liposuction?

Patients should plan to stay in Cancún for 7 to 10 days after liposuction. This helps you recover safely. During the stay, surgeons at accredited facilities like JCI-certified Riviera Institute can monitor for complications. They manage fluid drainage and clear you for safe air travel.

  • Procedure complexity: Smaller areas may require 7 days, but 360-degree liposuction requires 10 to 14 days.
  • Clinical observation: Most protocols include overnight clinic observation followed by daily rehabilitation or check-up appointments.
  • Travel safety: Staying 7+ days prevents the risk of deep vein thrombosis from sitting for long periods during flights.
  • Post-operative care: Surgeons typically remove drains and adjust compression garments during the first 7 to 10 days.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patients often focus on the surgery itself. But the experience of lead specialists is what really counts. Dr. Rafael Velasco Marin, for example, has over 30 years of experience. High-volume Cancún clinics often perform internal ultrasonic liposculpture. This technique can influence recovery. However, surgeons still require a 7-day minimum stay to manage early-phase swelling effectively.

Patient Consensus: Expect the first 3 days to be the hardest due to soreness and bruising. Patients recommend adding extra days for follow-up visits before navigating the airport.
