Initially, no one knew there was an appointment for us! They didn’t know who would attend to us! We had to ask several people using the reference name we had, and until they managed to identify the lady, we started the tests with a 2h delay… We did everything as planned without problems. More than 3 weeks have passed since we went to this clinic, and to date no one has sent us the results of the remaining tests. Not even the medical opinion! Considering how much was paid, no one is finishing what we went there to do!

FAQ about Medical check-up in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Can a tourist or non-resident see a doctor for a check-up in Spain?

Tourists and non-residents can easily access medical check-ups in Spain through private hospitals. Facilities like Centro Medico Teknon and Quironsalud Torrevieja provide specialized screenings for international patients. These JCI-accredited centers offer same-day appointments. Most private clinics accept cash or card payments without residency requirements.

  • Available procedures: Comprehensive options include male, female, pediatric, heart, and premium check-up packages.
  • Leading facilities: Top centers include Centro Medico Teknon, Quironsalud Madrid, and Hospital Ruber Internacional.
  • Expert specialists: Dr. Niko Mihic and Dr. Asuncion Maria Gonzalvez Gasch lead executive programs.
  • Clinic credentials: Many facilities hold JCI accreditation and Newsweek World's Best Hospitals rankings.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows a clear trend where clinics with JCI accreditation, like Quironsalud Torrevieja, handle much higher international volumes, often reaching 120,000 patients yearly. These high-capacity centers typically offer dedicated fast-track access for non-residents. This significantly reduces wait times compared to public facilities. Booking at a clinic with 400+ doctors ensures you can see multiple specialists during a single visit.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that private clinics in major cities provide seamless experiences with English-speaking staff. Some recommend confirming appointment times upon arrival. This helps avoid potential diagnostic delays or communication gaps regarding test results.

How long does a comprehensive health check-up typically take?

A comprehensive health check-up in Spain typically takes 1 to 5 hours. Duration depends on the complexity of the selected package. Basic screenings often finish within 60 minutes. Premium assessments involving diagnostic imaging or specialist consultations usually require a full morning or an entire day.

  • Basic screenings: These typically take 1 to 2 hours in private facilities.
  • Premium packages: Extensive exams often require 4 to 5 hours for completion.
  • Executive assessments: Comprehensive full-day programs can last between 6 and 8 hours.
  • Specialized tests: Adding audiometry or spirometry adds 15–30 minutes to the visit.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from high-volume centers like Quironsalud Torrevieja shows that clinics with JCI accreditation often utilize dedicated check-up circuits. These pathways minimize wait times between different testing stations. Choosing a facility with 400+ doctors ensures that specialist consultations occur immediately after diagnostic results are ready. This internal coordination can reduce a full-day process to a single 4-hour window.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that private clinics in Spain are highly efficient. Many report completing bloodwork, ECGs, and consultations within 90 minutes. Some patients emphasize the importance of arriving early. They suggest confirming the exact tests included to avoid unexpected delays from additional diagnostics.

Is health insurance required for a medical check-up or can I pay directly?

Health insurance is not required for a medical check-up in Spain. Patients can pay directly at private clinics like Centro Médico Teknon or Quironsalud Madrid. Private facilities accept cash or credit cards. Using direct payment often bypasses long wait times found in the public system.

  • Direct payment: Private clinics in Spain commonly accept self-pay patients without insurance.
  • Required documents: Patients only need a passport or valid ID for booking.
  • Cost transparency: Basic check-ups in Spain range from $200 to $600.
  • Specialized options: Gender-specific screenings like female check-ups cost $100 to $300.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows clinics with high patient volumes, such as Quironsalud Torrevieja with 120,000 annual patients, often provide the fastest access. While some patients report administrative delays at busy centers like Centro Médico Teknon, these facilities remain popular for their JCI-accredited safety standards and celebrity-grade care.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that paying directly is a straightforward way to skip bureaucracy. One patient emphasized that having a translator present makes the diagnostic process much smoother and faster.

What medical facilities or cities are recommended for English-speaking travelers?

Barcelona and Madrid are the primary recommendations for English-speaking travelers seeking medical check-ups in Spain. Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon and Hospital Ruber Internacional maintain JCI accreditation. These centers provide dedicated international departments with fluent English-speaking staff and comprehensive diagnostic protocols.

  • Clinic credentials: Centro Médico Teknon holds JCI accreditation and Newsweek clinical excellence honors.
  • Specialized expertise: Dr. Niko Mihic in Madrid leads executive health programs for international patients.
  • Patient volume: Quironsalud Torrevieja treats 120,000 patients annually with full multilingual support.
  • Service range: Facilities offer basic, premium, and specialized heart or pediatric health check-ups.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear trend where clinics in coastal areas like Alicante and Marbella, such as Quirónsalud Marbella, have higher experience with Northern European patients. These facilities often provide faster access to English-fluent specialists compared to inland public-private hybrids. For complex diagnostics, choosing a JCI-accredited center ensures following global safety standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is important to confirm appointments early to avoid initial administrative delays. Many travelers appreciate having a professional translator during tests to clarify medical details and ensure all results are delivered promptly.

What tests are included in “Basic” versus “Premium” check-up packages?

Basic check-up packages in Spain focus on essential screenings like blood counts, metabolic panels, and urinalysis for general health. Premium packages expand these with deep diagnostics. They often feature advanced cardiac imaging, tumor markers, hormonal profiles, and consultations with specialized physicians.

  • Basic diagnostics: Includes physical exams, BMI, blood pressure, and complete blood count (CBC).
  • Metabolic screening: Covers glucose, electrolytes, lipid profiles, and basic kidney/liver function tests.
  • Premium imaging: Adds abdominal ultrasounds, echocardiograms, and specialized carotid artery or thyroid scans.
  • Advanced labs: Features tumor markers, vitamin levels, and detailed thyroid or hormonal profiles.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish clinics like Quironsalud Torrevieja and Centro Médico Teknon handle 10,000 to 120,000 patients annually. High volume allows these centers to bundle specialist consultations into Premium tiers. Choosing a center with on-site JCI-accredited labs often reduces wait times for complex hormonal or genetic results.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that package names vary between private clinics in Spain. It is important to request an itemized list of tests to confirm if specialist reports are included.
