The recovery so far is better than expected
If you're considering this procedure, my main advice is to bring a physical card for payment. I used Apple Pay, which had a low transaction limit and forced me to make about 20 separate payments to cover the cost. Medically, everything was straightforward. I had lens replacement in both eyes on the same day, and the recovery so far is better than expected. my doctor, who took the time to explain which technique suited my eyes and was very honest about the realistic vision outcome I could anticipate. I must also say a huge thank you to the night nurse ( mirve ) I think was her name she was outstanding and took good care of me . It was reassuring that there were no additional expenses. The one thing to note is that there was little contact from the clinic after I left, but the core service was solid.
I can’t speak highly enough of the treatment from all staff especially mirve who looked after me through the night she came every hour to do my drops until I asked her to come at 6.00 in morning she gave me an extension number incase I needed anything before six , which I did at 5.00am she immediately came to my room and sorted my issue the operation went perfect and after only two days I can see better than I have in the last 18 years 👌👍👌 thank you everyone

It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again!
Overall, the experience was very much worth. It’s so world changing to be able to see clearly again! The cost was so much better than in the US, and I was also able to get the lens I wanted that is not available in the US yet. Other than a false assumption about where my hotel was located, and the drivers having difficulty finding me, the only perimeter went pretty smoothly. I’m happy with the outcome. I would only suggest that there be at least one nurse or medical staff besides the doctor who speaks English. Many more paranoid, or less traveled Americans would have a hard time going through that honestly. I feel the service is very worth iit overall, those are just some recommendations to make the service excellent and a no-brainer for Americans who need medical procedures.

The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding
My Experience with Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul I recently had surgery in Turkey, and I must say, my coordinator Olya was an incredible professional. She was with me every step of the way, always available 24/7, a true angel! Thanks to her, I chose this hospital and Turkey instead of the Czech Republic. Olya’s support was crucial in my decision, and I’m forever grateful to her. Special thanks to our guide Said, who was always available, no matter the time of day or night. He helped resolve every issue between me and the clinic, providing a smooth experience throughout the process. The doctor who performed my surgery, Alperen Koç, was outstanding. From the initial consultation to the operation itself, everything went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly. He’s truly a high-level professional who’s there to treat patients rather than make money off them. I deeply appreciate all of his care and expertise. A week has passed since the surgery, and I feel good, though my vision hasn’t fully returned yet. However, this is normal, and I’m confident that it will improve over time. I can confidently recommend Bookimed and VM Medical Park Hospital in Istanbul. Cons: The main downside of my experience was with the hospital’s billing department. They requested payment in cash, but we were not informed about this before traveling to Turkey. If you want to pay by card, they charge a 20% commission, which is an unreasonably high fee. I’d also like to mention someone named Timur (I don’t remember his last name). In front of patients, he was speaking in Russian with a female colleague, assuming we didn’t understand the language. They said something like, “People are so stupid; it’s hard to work with such dumb people.” This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in the presence of patients. Such conversations seriously undermine the clinic’s reputation and are inappropriate in a professional healthcare setting. Therefore, I strongly advise anyone planning a visit to clarify all financial and organizational details
About Bookimed service
My experience with Bookimed was incredibly positive. From the moment I reached out, my coordinator Olya provided exceptional support, always available and guiding me through every step. The process of selecting the clinic and arranging everything was smooth and well-organized, thanks to her. Bookimed’s team made me feel confident in my decision, and their constant communication gave me peace of mind throughout the treatment journey. I highly recommend their services for anyone seeking medical care abroad.

I was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were
I had lens replacement and cataract surgery and was blown away by how professional and eager to assist the staff were. It was followed up by Bookimed a week later since Id returned home. They even refunded me some of my original payment even though I hadn't requested it as they found an error on the calculations. I know it's concerning to travel and have operations but from my experience you truly have nothing to worry about. I will definitely look at further surgery via this company and hospital.

Vision diagnostics for 120 €, which can be done free of charge in almost any optician. The offered price for the operation is 2 times higher than the price in February. The feeling that everyone needs to sell treatment and as expensive as possible.

Expert Overview about Cataract Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the success rate of cataract surgery in Turkey?

Cataract surgery in Turkey maintains high success rates between 95% and 98%. Facilities in Istanbul and Ankara report efficacy reaching 98% for significant vision restoration. Most procedures utilize phacoemulsification or femtosecond laser techniques. These needle-free methods align with international safety standards.

  • Surgeon expertise: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Satici has performed over 20,000 surgical cases.
  • Technology standards: Clinics use premium lenses like Alcon Panoptix and Rayner Trifocal implants.
  • Patient safety: Serious intraoperative complications are rare, occurring in approximately 3.2% of cases.
  • Clinical volume: Veni Vidi Eye Clinics treat approximately 50,000 ophthalmology patients annually.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Success in Turkish eye care is driven by massive surgical volumes that build rare technical proficiency. For example, Dr. Ertan Sunay has performed over 60,000 eye surgeries. This level of repetition at specialized centers like Veni Vidi often exceeds the lifetime experience of many Western surgeons.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is life-changing to see clearly again and describe the process as smooth and painless. Many emphasize that they could access specialty lenses, like certain trifocals, that were not yet available in their home countries.

Is it safe to fly after cataract surgery?

Flying after cataract surgery is generally safe 24 hours after the procedure. Cabin pressure does not damage the new intraocular lens. Most surgeons in Turkey require a follow-up exam 1 day later. You should wait 3 to 7 days for international flights to ensure stability.

  • Follow-up exams: Attend mandatory appointments 24 hours and 5–8 days post-surgery.
  • Cabin humidity: Use preservative-free artificial tears hourly to combat dry airplane air.
  • Physical limits: Avoid lifting heavy luggage to prevent increased eye pressure during travel.
  • Eye protection: Wear a prescribed shield while sleeping to prevent accidental eye rubbing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many patients fly home after 48 hours, choosing a package with built-in stay provides a safety buffer. For example, Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital includes a 3-day hotel stay. This covers the critical window where rare complications are most likely to be detected by your surgeon.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that vision can remain blurry during the flight but improves with frequent drops. Many emphasize wearing sunglasses in the airport to manage light sensitivity after surgery.

What activities must be avoided during the first week after cataract surgery?

Patients must avoid any activities that increase intraocular pressure or introduce bacteria during the initial seven-day healing period. This includes bending at the waist, lifting more than 15 pounds, and strenuous exercise. Protecting the surgical wound from water, dust, and physical trauma is essential for recovery.

  • Physical strain: Avoid bending over or lowering your head below heart level to prevent pressure.
  • Weight limits: Do not lift objects heavier than 10 to 15 pounds during week 1.
  • Water safety: Keep soap and water out of eyes; avoid swimming or hot tubs.
  • Eye protection: Wear the provided eye shield while sleeping to prevent accidental rubbing or pressing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish eye centers like Veni Vidi Eye Clinics and Dunyagoz prioritize high-volume expertise, with surgeons often performing over 20,000 to 60,000 procedures. This experience is vital because they use advanced trifocal and EDOF lenses from brands like Rayner and Alcon. Packages often include three nights in 4-star hotels, ensuring you stay in a clean environment during the critical first few days.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize the need for a helper at home to avoid the temptation of bending or lifting. Many note that staying indoors helps avoid Istanbul's dust and prevents the urge to rub itchy eyes during early healing.

What is the typical recovery timeline for cataract surgery in Turkey?

Patients typically notice improved vision within 24 to 72 hours after cataract surgery in Turkey. Most return to light activities after 1 week. Full healing and visual stability generally take 4 to 6 weeks. Specialists often clear international patients for flights home 5 to 7 days after the procedure.

  • Visual improvement: Many patients report clearer sight within 1 to 3 days after surgery.
  • Daily activities: Desk work is usually safe after 1 week. Avoid physical labour for longer.
  • Healing period: Eyes generally heal fully and achieve stable vision within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Post-operative checks: Clinics like Dunyagoz Istanbul Etiler often perform follow-ups 24 hours after treatment.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume specialists like Dr Baha Toygar and Prof. Dr Ahmet Satici have handled 20,000+ to 30,000+ cases each. Data shows these experienced Turkish surgeons often use trifocal or EDOF lenses, such as Alcon PanOptix. These lens choices can significantly influence how quickly a patient adapts to various distances during recovery.

Patient Consensus: Patients in Turkey report rapid visual results. They note that vision continues to settle for several weeks. Many emphasise the importance of confirming English-speaking nursing staff. They also recommend getting clear written eye-drop schedules before flying home.

How long must I stay in Turkey after having cataract surgery?

Patients should plan to stay in Turkey for 3 to 7 days after cataract surgery. This timeframe allows for the procedure and essential follow-up checks. Surgeons typically perform the operation as a day procedure. Initial reviews occur within 24 to 48 hours to confirm lens positioning.

  • Hospital stay: Most centres perform this as day surgery with no overnight stay required.
  • Initial checkup: Surgeons typically schedule the first post-operative review for the following day.
  • Travel clearance: Doctors usually advise waiting 5 to 7 days before flying home.
  • Bilateral surgery: Treating both eyes may extend the trip to ensure stable healing.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While basic packages often cover just the surgery, all-inclusive options like those at Lokman Hekim Istanbul Hospital provide a 3-day hotel stay. This covers the critical first 72 hours when the most important follow-up checks occur. Choosing a package with accommodation included keeps patients near their specialist during the initial recovery window.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that the trip feels more like a quick medical visit than a long holiday. They suggest staying until the first review is finished for peace of mind before the flight back to Australia.

What types of intraocular lenses are available for cataract surgery in Turkey?

Turkish clinics offer several intraocular lenses (IOLs). These include monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, and Toric options to correct astigmatism. Leading centres use premium brands like Alcon PanOptix, TECNIS PurSee, and German Liberty. Specialised Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses and laser-assisted implantation are also widely available.

  • Monofocal lenses: Standard option for clear distance vision. Patients usually still need glasses for reading.
  • Trifocal lenses: Premium smart lenses, such as Alcon PanOptix, provide clear vision at three distances.
  • Toric lenses: Customised implants designed to correct astigmatism during cataract removal.
  • EDOF lenses: These offer a continuous range of vision without distinct focal gaps.
  • Brand variety: Clinics use international brands including RAYNER, TECNIS, and Alcon for reliable surgical outcomes.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Australian clinics focus on one lens brand. However, Turkish surgeons like Prof. Dr Ahmet Satici often offer Alcon, TECNIS, and RAYNER within one practice. This variety allows patients to select lenses based on their personal lifestyle needs.

Patient Consensus: Patients are often impressed by premium lens options in Turkey not yet available at home. Many mention the relief of seeing clearly again. They also value the professional and helpful hospital staff during their stay.

Are both eyes treated on the same day during cataract surgery in Turkey?

Turkish clinics typically perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. This allows the first eye to heal before proceeding. Some specialists offer same-day bilateral surgery for international patients. However, most wait 1 to 3 weeks between procedures for stable vision results.

  • Staged approach: Surgeons monitor the first eye's healing before treating the second.
  • Clinical protocols: Doctors like Prof. Ahmet Satici use phacoemulsification for precise outcomes.
  • Specific timing: The gap depends on eye health and the surgeon's recommendation.
  • Package inclusion: Many A$2,800 to A$4,100 packages specifically cover surgery for one eye.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most clinics quote for one eye, specialists like Dr Baha Toygar at Dunyagoz Etiler have treated 30,000+ cases. Surgeons with this volume often handle complex bilateral requests more efficiently. Patients should check if their A$3,000+ package includes the specific trifocal lenses they require. IOL types significantly affect the total cost.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the professionalism of Turkish staff. They appreciate getting lens types not yet available in other countries. Travel plans should include a week of follow-up care. This helps the first eye settle before flying home.

Is femtosecond laser-assisted surgery an option for cataracts in Turkey?

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is a standard option in Turkey. Major clinics use this technology to create precise corneal incisions. They also use it to fragment the lens before removal. It improves surgical accuracy and reduces recovery times compared to manual blade techniques.

  • Expert specialists: Dr Huseyin Aslankara and Dr Ertan Sunay specialise in femtosecond laser applications.
  • Laser capabilities: Surgeons use systems like IntraLase for computer-controlled capsulotomy and lens fragmentation.
  • Premium lenses: Packages often include Alcon PanOptix or TECNIS trifocal lenses alongside laser procedures.
  • Accredited facilities: JCI-accredited hospitals such as Lokman Hekim Istanbul offer these surgical suites.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Many Turkish packages are listed as laser-assisted. Patients should confirm if the price includes lens fragmentation. High-volume surgeons like Dr Ahmet Satici have handled 20,000+ cases. They often combine laser precision with premium EDOF or trifocal lenses.

Patient Consensus: Patients note the surgery is quick and painless. Most feel comfortable enough for same-day discharge. Those travelling to Turkey suggest clarifying the billing method early. Some hospital departments prefer cash payments over credit cards.
