Liv hospital is a terrible clinic! We were very disappointed, it’s good that they went to the memorial on time from there and didn’t perform the operation on my grandfather, conducted an examination in another clinic where they began to fully deal with him and sort out his problem with a council of doctors, in Livonia we just shouted that the situation was an emergency and it was necessary urgently to take action and just wanted to put on the operation the next day without looking at the tests and the like !!!!

Before I went, I told them that I needed some kind of operation. At the end, after all the tests, they tell me that this operation is not suitable for you. It turns out I went in vain and spent the money. double expense. I'm disappointed

Expert Overview about Diabetes type 2 Treatment in Turkey

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the primary diabetes surgery offered to Type 2 patients in Turkey?

Metabolic surgery is the primary treatment for Type 2 diabetes in Turkey. Surgeons frequently perform laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass to achieve remission. Specialized techniques like transit bipartition and ileal interposition are also available. These procedures target hormonal changes to stabilize blood glucose levels.

  • Primary approach: Metabolic surgery is the mainstay for treating uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes.
  • Common procedures: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are most frequently offered.
  • Success rates: Turkish clinics report 90% to 92% rates for significant diabetes improvement.
  • Typical stay: Packages usually include 3 days of hospitalization and 1–6 hotel nights.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While many assume BMI is the only factor, experienced Turkish specialists prioritize metabolic activity. Dr. Fatih Karaca at Estexper Clinic performed the country’s first laparoscopic metabolic surgery in 2009. Our data shows that top-tier clinics now combine surgery with multi-disciplinary consultations including cardidologists and nutritionists. This comprehensive approach is why Istanbul serves over 10,000 international diabetes patients annually.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is the most common recommendation for those with a BMI between 30 and 45. Many express relief that all-inclusive bundles cover metabolic nutrition menus and 24/7 language assistance during recovery.

Who is a good medical candidate for metabolic surgery in Turkish clinics?

Good medical candidates for metabolic surgery in Turkey typically have Type 2 diabetes with a BMI of 30 or higher. Surgeons prioritize patients with active insulin production, often verified by C-peptide levels over 3 ng/mL. Candidates usually show uncontrolled blood sugar despite using multiple medications.

  • BMI requirements: Patients with Type 2 diabetes often qualify with a BMI starting from 30.
  • Insulin reserves: A functioning pancreas is required to ensure the metabolic reset is effective.
  • Disease duration: Best results occur for those diagnosed between 3 and 15 years ago.
  • Health indicators: High HbA1c levels above 7.5% despite medical optimization strengthen surgical candidacy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Turkish specialists like Dr. Fatih Karaca often focus on metabolic markers over weight alone. Our data shows clinics like Estexper Clinic and Memorial Ataşehir Hospital provide packages including extensive ECG mapping and biochemistry. This suggests candidacy depends heavily on cardiac and internal health readiness rather than just a BMI calculation.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that having a list of current diabetes medications and recent blood panels ready speeds up the approval process. They emphasize that surgeons look closely at kidney function and expect a commitment to lifelong vitamin supplements after the procedure.

Is it safe to undergo metabolic surgery in Turkey?

Metabolic surgery in Turkey is safe when conducted at JCI-accredited hospitals by board-certified surgeons. Turkish centers maintain high safety standards through rigorous preoperative screenings. Leading facilities like Memorial Sisli and Anadolu Medical Center follow international protocols to ensure high success rates for type 2 diabetes remission.

  • Accreditation standards: Top hospitals hold Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO certifications for safety.
  • Surgeon expertise: Doctors like Dr. Fatih Karaca have performed these laparoscopic procedures since 2009.
  • Diagnostic rigor: Packages include cardiology consultations, ECG mapping, and comprehensive biochemistry blood testing.
  • High-volume centers: Major hospitals like Hisar Intercontinental serve over 250,000 patients every year.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows a clear link between recovery speed and clinic specialization. Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital utilizes an eco-friendly design specifically to promote faster healing. While many clinics offer 1-day hotel stays, Memorial Ankara provides 4 to 6 days. This extra rest period is vital for stabilizing blood sugar before flying home.

Patient Consensus: Patients often note that top-tier Turkish surgeons provide outcomes matching Western centers. They emphasize that while diabetes remission is common, arranging local follow-up care beforehand is essential for long-term health.

What post-operative care is provided after returning home?

Post-operative care for diabetes treatment focuses on blood sugar monitoring and dietary transitions. Patients follow a multi-stage nutritional plan progressing from liquids to soft foods over 4 weeks. Most Turkish centers include follow-up examinations and medication kits in their comprehensive surgery packages.

  • Medical monitoring: Patients must track blood glucose levels 4 times daily during the initial recovery.
  • Wound management: Daily dressing changes are required to keep laparoscopic incision sites clean and dry.
  • Physical activity: Walking for 30 minutes starting from day 1 helps prevent blood clots.
  • Nutritional support: Diets prioritize protein intake to facilitate tissue repair and prevent sudden hypoglycemia.

Bookimed Expert Insight: While most patients focus on the surgery itself, the most successful recoveries come from clinics offering extended hotel stays. Our data shows Memorial Ankara Hospital provides up to 6 days in a 5-star hotel. This extra time allows for professional monitoring during the critical first week when insulin needs fluctuate most rapidly.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while recovery is quick, you must be ready to manage your own sugar levels and share data daily via messaging apps. Expect to handle your own dressing changes and electrolyte balance without home nursing visits typical in other regions.

What is the reported success rate of diabetes surgery in Turkey?

Diabetes surgery in Turkey reports success rates between 80% and 90% for achieving full type 2 diabetes remission. Specialized metabolic techniques like ileal interposition reach up to 92% effectiveness. Outcomes depend on pancreatic insulin reserves and disease duration being under 10 years.

  • Success rates: Clinical improvement or full medication independence occurs in 80% to 90% of cases.
  • Procedure efficacy: Ileal interposition and transit bipartition report remission rates between 86% and 92%.
  • Clinical benchmarks: Anadolu Medical Center maintains an 85% improvement rate through its Johns Hopkins affiliation.
  • Expert experience: Surgeons like Dr. Fatih Karaca performed Turkey's first laparoscopic metabolic surgery in 2009.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear link between hospital infrastructure and long-term metabolic control. JCI-accredited centers like Memorial Bahçelievler use multidisciplinary teams to stabilize blood sugar before surgery. Their packages often include 3 hospital nights and extended hotel stays to ensure early recovery monitoring. This focus on the immediate post-operative window helps maintain the high 80% success rates reported across Istanbul.

Patient Consensus: Patients often see HbA1c levels drop significantly within 6 to 12 months. Many emphasize that while the surgery is life-changing, following the initial diet plan is vital for lasting results.
