Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff
Attentive and caring staff, friendly and welcoming, very clean clinic. There was a significant difference between the base price, which was between €5,000 and €8,000, and the only additional examination, which was €150. To our surprise, we were asked to pay €9,750, which is a difference of €1,650. I wanted to have cataract surgery on my left eye and was given a quote of €5,610, which I found excessive given that I had already paid €9,750. Otherwise, everything was perfect, especially the staff.
The kindness of all the medical staff
1-We couldn't find a cushion after a vitrectomy, even after searching all over Barcelona, so I suffered without a cushion for my neck. 2-Leaving without the medical report, promising to send it to us by email, which we still haven't received after 11 days.

"We have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr
We were examined in one of the clinics of this network - the Dexeus hospital. I am very grateful to the medical coordinators of Bookimed for their help in organizing the consultation there. We have a very complex ophthalmological problem that we have been trying to solve for many years. We traveled to different countries, consulted with very experienced doctors in the largest university clinics in Germany. But unfortunately, none of them had encountered similar situations before and could not prescribe us an effective treatment to solve the problem. And when we arrived at the Dexeus hospital, we were able to get a very highly qualified consultation, conduct serious examinations, and now we have hope for a recovery, thanks to the highest-level specialist Dr. Verges, who turned out to be the first doctor who successfully treated previously such complex types of eye allergies as my son had. The clinic of this network pleasantly surprised us with the most modern approach to examinations, a high level of specialists and cutting-edge equipment. Absolutely not inferior to well-known German clinics. We will now recommend her to our friends and family.
About Bookimed service

FAQ about Ophthalmology in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Is eye care free in Spain?

Public healthcare in Spain covers medical eye treatments but excludes routine vision correction for most adults. Consultations for conditions like cataracts or glaucoma are free for registered residents through the National Health System. However, patients typically pay out-of-pocket for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and elective refractive surgeries.

  • Public coverage: Includes specialist referrals, medically necessary surgeries, and emergency eye care.
  • Routine care: Patients usually pay for eye exams and prescription wear at private opticians.
  • Child benefits: New subsidies provide approximately €100 for glasses for children under 16.
  • Private costs: Ophthalmology in Spain ranges from _price_from_ to _price_to_ for advanced procedures.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers like Quironsalud Torrevieja, which serves 120,000 patients annually, often provide much faster access to specialized diagnostics. While the public system may have wait times exceeding 6 months, private clinics in resort areas like Alicante or Marbella frequently offer same-week appointments for international patients.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the public system is reliable for emergencies, the wait for non-urgent surgeries like cataracts can last over a year. Many recommend using private clinics for speed, especially since basic infection treatments are relatively affordable at 100 to 200 euros.

Can both eyes be operated on at the same time?

Ophthalmologists in Spain routinely perform surgery on both eyes at the same time for specific procedures. Laser treatments like LASIK and ReLEx SMILE are typically simultaneous. Corrective surgeries for strabismus also follow this pattern. Surgeons often stagger cataract procedures by 1 to 2 weeks to ensure optimal safety.

  • Refractive procedures: LASIK and PRK are standard same-day bilateral surgeries at private Spanish clinics.
  • Cataract surgery: Surgeons usually wait 1 week between eyes to monitor the first eye's recovery.
  • Strabismus correction: This procedure often involves both eyes in one session to ensure proper alignment.
  • Safety protocols: Doctors use completely separate sterile instrument sets for each eye during simultaneous cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: High-volume centers like Centro Médico Teknon or Quirónsalud Marbella offer more flexibility for same-day procedures. Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel performs over 3,600 surgeries annually, providing deep expertise in simultaneous bilateral cases. While public hospitals often mandate a 1-week gap, private facilities allow you to choose based on your recovery speed.

Patient Consensus: Patients value the convenience of a single recovery period, especially for laser vision correction. Some prefer staggering cataract surgery by a week to avoid total temporary vision blur during the initial healing phase.

What is the recovery time for laser eye surgery?

Recovery time for laser eye surgery in Spain is typically rapid. Most patients achieve functional vision within 24 to 48 hours for LASIK or SMILE procedures. While initial clarity is high, complete stabilization of vision and full biological healing usually take 3 to 6 months.

  • Procedure impacts: LASIK and SMILE offer 1–2 day recovery. PRK needs 4–7 days.
  • Daily activities: Most patients return to work or drive within 2 days after LASIK.
  • Visual side effects: Temporary glares, halos, or dry eyes may persist for 1–4 weeks.
  • Stabilization period: Final visual results and prescription stability typically occur after 3–6 months.
  • Activity restrictions: Avoid swimming and contact sports for at least 2–4 weeks post-surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish clinics like Centro Médico Teknon or Quirónsalud Marbella often treat 10,000+ to 30,000+ patients annually. This high volume allows surgeons like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel to refine protocols that prioritize early-stage stability. Patients should note that clinics with JCI accreditation often provide more structured follow-up schedules at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that functional vision returns quickly. However, many emphasize that dry eyes are an underestimated challenge. They suggest stocking up on preservative-free drops and avoiding screens longer than recommended to prevent irritation during the first 2 weeks.

Are advanced retina treatments available?

Advanced retina treatments in Spain include vitrectomy, retinal detachment surgery, and neovascular AMD therapies. Leading specialists like Dr. Jordi Mones at Centro Médico Teknon focus on retinal degenerative diseases. Facilities utilize advanced imaging and modern surgical techniques to treat complex macular and vitreoretinal conditions effectively.

  • Retinal detachment: Surgeries in Spain typically cost $5,000 to $8,000.
  • Specialized expertise: Dr. Jordi Mones at Centro Médico Teknon specializes in neovascular AMD.
  • Clinic credentials: Centro Médico Teknon holds JCI accreditation and Newsweek Best Hospitals 2021 honors.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Clinics offer comprehensive ophthalmological investigations starting from $100.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spain's premier eye clinics often function as research hubs for international clinical trials. For instance, Centro Médico Teknon is led by directors with Ph.D. credentials from Harvard. This academic connection gives patients access to specialized treatment protocols for rare eye allergies and complex macular issues not found in standard clinics.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while the staff is incredibly professional, it is wise to clarify final costs beforehand. One patient mentioned that specialized examinations can sometimes lead to price adjustments beyond the initial base quote.

Do clinics in Spain have English-speaking staff?

Major private eye clinics in Spain provide English-speaking medical staff and dedicated international departments to assist global patients. Facilities in Barcelona, Madrid, and Marbella frequently employ bilingual specialists. These centers offer complex procedures like LASIK, cataract surgery, and corneal transplants for international travelers.

  • International departments: Clinics like Centro Médico Teknon provide coordinators for seamless English communication.
  • Bilingual specialists: Doctors like Dr. Nabil Ragaei Kamel treat thousands of international patients annually.
  • Location advantage: High-tourism hubs like Alicante and Marbella ensure higher English proficiency among staff.
  • Support services: Many JCI-accredited hospitals include translation assistance and English-language medical documentation.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Patient volume is a reliable indicator of English proficiency in Spanish healthcare. Data shows that clinics handling 30,000+ patients yearly, such as Quirónsalud Marbella or Quirónsalud Torrevieja, typically offer robust multilingual support. These high-capacity centers often fast-track international cases, ensuring that language barriers do not delay urgent ophthalmic diagnostics or specialized surgeries.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while administrative staff are usually fluent, some doctors may use translation apps for technical terms. Most suggest requesting written post-operative instructions in English to avoid any confusion after the procedure.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your government-issued ID, such as a passport or NIE, and any current vision prescriptions. You must provide a list of all medications, including eye drops and supplements. Sharing your medical history, specifically regarding diabetes or allergies, is vital for a safe treatment plan in Spain.

  • Identification: Carry a passport or residency card (NIE) for identity verification and clinic registration.
  • Vision records: Bring current eyeglasses, contact lens boxes, and previous prescriptions for comparison.
  • Medical history: Document chronic conditions like diabetes and list all known drug allergies.
  • Medication list: Include dosages for all active prescriptions and over-the-counter eye care products.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinics with high patient volumes, such as Quironsalud Torrevieja which serves 120,000 people annually, often use digital records. However, bringing physical copies of recent OCT scans or MRI results can prevent diagnostic delays. In centers like Centro Médico Teknon, having your own records allows specialists to focus immediately on creating your tailored treatment plan.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it is helpful to use translation apps if you do not speak Spanish. They also suggest bringing a payment method for private consultations. Recording your specific symptoms, like when blurring occurs, helps doctors provide a faster diagnosis during the visit.

What are the emergency eye care options?

Emergency eye care in Spain involves immediate access to specialized hospital departments or private ophthalmology clinics. Patients with sudden vision changes, chemical burns, or penetrating injuries should head to a Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited facility. These centers provide 24-hour diagnostic services and specialist consultations.

  • Hospital emergency rooms: Public and private hospitals in Spain offer 24/7 specialized ophthalmic triage.
  • Specialist clinics: Facilities like Centro Médico Teknon provide advanced diagnostics and urgent surgical interventions.
  • Pediatric emergencies: SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital specializes in urgent eye care for patients under 18.
  • Diagnostic access: Emergency consultations often include immediate slit-lamp exams or high-precision imaging like MRI.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that choosing a multidisciplinary hub like Centro Médico Teknon is safer for complex cases. These facilities house over 400 doctors across 50 departments. If an eye injury involves neurological symptoms, specialists can collaborate instantly. This in-house coordination skips the delays of transferring patients between separate medical centers.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that private clinics offer significantly faster service, often under one hour. Many suggest having an EHIC or private insurance ready to avoid high out-of-pocket costs during urgent visits.
