Even though Bookimed staff was really helpful
Even though Bookimed staff was really helpful, the Carolina hospital in Poland I chose was quite disappointing. They were an hour late for their consultation. Even after the hospital said I couldn’t get a quote until I pay for consultation. After I did, they were an hour late for it. There was no one to contact to ask if the appointment was still on or cancelled and they didn’t reach out to me until after 1hr asking if I was ready for my consultation. No single apology for running behind schedule. Told them they were late and I had another appointment to catch up with, suddenly they offered to review my results offline and give me a quote since I can’t attend the consultation as if it was my fault I couldn’t attend it. I thought they couldn’t give a quote until they have a consultation. I was pissed with the unprofessionalism of the doctor/his secretary
About Bookimed service
Maria, my medical coordinator was super helpful in sourcing for different hospitals and getting quotes for me. She was able to answer my queries and quite proactive.

Everything was top notch
Everything was top notch. Friendly staff at the reception. There was a language barrier, but a Russian-speaking girl quickly came up. They took me to the doctor. The neurosurgeon Tomasz Nitchuk was attentive. Explained everything. Gave answers to all my questions. And special thanks to Bookimed. Everything is operational# accessible. I recommend it to everyone. Good luck.

The most terrible experience with a doctor in my life, and both my husband and I have the same opinion, I was not even examined once during 2 visits, apparently, he wanted to go home the first time, because there was no one else after me, I came with a question whether it is possible to get pregnant with my spinal injury, he immediately said yes, get pregnant, why do you ask? He didn't even ask me about my stabilisation or how my spine had healed, he wasn't interested in the consultation at all, he behaved disgustingly, he looked away from his computer twice, it looked like the doctor had "caught a star" and spoke to us as if he didn't even know what he was talking about... I've never seen such disrespect and arrogance from doctors in my life!
The overall impression was spoilt by the star doctor 👎🏽
That every time you come, you have to pay PLN 400 for each consultation, there is no second consultation, as in other normal clinics, absolutely no one is interested in you, "beautiful" private medicine

I paid PLN 350 for a consultation with a neurosurgeon, and the doctor didn’t really say anything, he said, like, I’ll give you the number of a rehabilitator, go to him, pay more and he will show you what exercises to do. For that kind of money, he had to show at least some minimum of exercises.

I would like to share my experience in the clinic. The most important thing about the operation, I had a huge hernia and before the operation I was warned about the possible difficulties of removal by the endoscopic method, but the doctor advised me to start with it. A very good doctor - Stanislaw Kwiek, has over 16 years of experience in minimally invasive surgery. The operation was successful. The rehabilitologist is a good woman, she told and showed the exercises and a rough rehabilitation plan. Most of all I didn't like the managers. Before the operation, they assured that it was enough for them to show the tickets, that I was flying to them, and you could pay on the spot. As soon as I showed the tickets, they told me that now I need to pay 20% in advance ... Also, the entire price list was thrown off to me only after I threw off the tickets to them. Part of the expenses was covered by the insurance and the clinic had to return the difference. If before the operation they picked up the phone immediately, then after that I could not get through. The money was returned after 2 weeks, but not the entire amount, I did not understand why, as I think it is useless. In general, if you forget about those who make money and talk only about the honey side, then everything is fine. Good doctor.

- Overall, I am delighted with my treatment so far
I am an international patient of the Carolina hospital, travelling from Ireland. From the very first point of contact by email, all the way through to medical treatment I have had a wonderful experience. I was offered travel and accommodation arrangements by email long before I had arrived. Special mention in this regard would have to go to Dr Lesya Turuk. She contacted me several times to get all of the arrangements in place before I initially arrived. Her dedication and professionalism really accentuated the whole process. Without Dr Turuk's involvement I may not even have bothered travelling abroad for surgery. Dr Turuk is a credit to the hospital. The administration staff were very helpful, patient and courteous. The hospital diagnostic scans MRI, CT Scans, etc. were very detailed. They took on average 3 times longer for an MRI, but the detail of the picture is much greater as a result. The Radiography staff were both reassuring and courteous. I also met 2 Doctors while there, one a Neurosurgeon and the second an Orthopedic hip surgeon. As this situation is still ongoing I will update my review going forward. Needless to say they were both highly accomplished, professional and excellent Doctors. Overall, I am delighted with my treatment so far. Sincerely Damien Dowling.

FAQ about Neurosurgery in Poland

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

Which hospitals in Poland are best-known for treating complex neurosurgical cases?

Poland features several specialized centers for complex neurosurgical cases, including brain tumors and intricate spinal surgeries. Top choices include the University Hospital in Krakow and Carolina Hospital in Warsaw. These facilities utilize advanced 3D MRI, endoscopic techniques, and specialized neurosurgical teams to handle high-difficulty procedures.

  • University Hospital in Krakow: Uses 3D MRI and 24 theaters for rare brain tumor surgeries.
  • Carolina Hospital: A FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence specializing in complex, minimally invasive spine surgery.
  • KCM Clinic: Known for advanced 3D/4K visualization in endoscopic spinal interventions and international care.
  • University Clinical Center: Academic hubs in Warsaw and Gdansk provide multidisciplinary care for neuromuscular diseases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that private clinics like Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic offer significantly faster access for international patients. While university hospitals handle high volumes—over 455,000 patients annually in Krakow—private centers focus on niche expertise. KCM Clinic specifically serves 700+ international patients yearly. This volume allows them to refine specialized protocols for endoscopic spine surgery that are often unavailable in general hospitals.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize that while public academic centers in Warsaw and Krakow are best for the most rare cases, wait times for consultations are often long. Those who chose private clinics frequently highlight the helpfulness of dedicated coordinators and the much faster transition from diagnosis to surgery.

What are typical success and complication rates in Polish neurosurgery departments?

Polish neurosurgery departments report high success rates for elective procedures. Specialized spine centers achieve 91% patient satisfaction. Success for cranial cases varies by pathology. Epilepsy surgeries show a 77.8% seizure-free rate. Elective surgeries maintain a 99.8% survival rate across major clinics.

  • Spine surgery outcomes: Specialized outpatient centers report low complication rates around 2.83%.
  • Cranial success: Brain tumor survival depends on type. Glioma survival often exceeds 10 years.
  • Reoperation rates: Neurosurgery departments maintain a low 8.27% one-year reoperation rate for spine disease.
  • Infection control: Surgical site infections are rare. Current data shows they occurs in only 0.8% of cases.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Clinical data shows a major quality gap between neurosurgery and orthopedic departments for spinal cases. Polish neurosurgery units, like Carolina Hospital, have significantly lower reoperation rates than orthopedic wards. Patients choosing neurosurgeons for disc issues typically experience better long-term stability and fewer repeat procedures.

Patient Consensus: Patients emphasize finding surgeons with high case volumes for specific procedures. Many note that larger university hospitals in cities like Warsaw or Krakow provide more comprehensive technical support.

Who are the most experienced neurosurgeons in Poland for minimally invasive and endoscopic spine procedures?

Experienced neurosurgeons in Poland include Dr. Jurij Kseniuk and Dr. Radoslaw Michalik at Carolina Hospital. They specialize in endoscopic spine surgery and artificial disc implantation. These experts utilize joimax systems and RIWO Spine techniques for minimally invasive disc removal in Warsaw and Jelenia Gora.

  • Dr. Jurij Kseniuk: Head of Spine Surgery at Carolina Hospital with 25+ years of experience.
  • Dr. Maciej Bujko: Certified international instructor for RIWO Spine full-endoscopic surgery at Carolina Hospital.
  • Dr. Radoslaw Michalik: Performed 1,000+ advanced spinal procedures, specializing in endoscopic lumbar hernia removal.
  • Docent Stanislaw Kwiek: Specialist at KCM Clinic with 15+ years in minimally invasive SED-YESS endoscopy.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows that Carolina Hospital provides exceptionally detailed diagnostics. Their MRI scans take 3 times longer than standard protocols to ensure higher image resolution. This precision helps surgeons like Dr. Maciej Bujko plan endoscopic routes more accurately. This often reduces the need for traditional open surgery.

Patient Consensus: Patients note it's important to verify a surgeon's specific volume of endoscopic cases. Many appreciate when clinics provide clear rehabilitation plans and have staff to bridge language barriers during consultations.

What language support is available for international neurosurgery patients?

International neurosurgery patients in Poland receive language support through dedicated multilingual coordinators, English-speaking clinical teams, and real-time translation help. Private centers in Warsaw and Jelenia Gora specialize in treating international cases. They often provide documentation and consultations in English, German, or Russian to ensure clear communication.

  • Multilingual staff: Doctors like Dr. Maciej Bujko speak English, German, and Russian fluently.
  • Dedicated coordinators: Clinics assign staff to bridge gaps between patients and medical teams.
  • Language accessibility: Warsaw clinics frequently support patients from the UK, USA, and Canada.
  • On-site assistance: Reception teams often include Russian-speaking staff for immediate patient support.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Our data shows a clear trend where clinics with 50+ reviews, such as Carolina Hospital, prioritize in-house translation. While regional hospitals might require external translators, these major Warsaw centers integrate language support into their standard care. This often includes medical reports provided directly in English, saving patients the cost of professional translation services later.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while a language barrier can exist at reception, clinics quickly provide English or Russian-speaking assistants. Many highlight that coordinators go above and beyond to manage both medical and travel arrangements in the patient's native language.

How long is the average hospital stay and total recovery time for common neurosurgical procedures in Poland?

Average hospital stays for neurosurgery in Poland range from 1 to 10 days. Total recovery times vary between 2 weeks and 12 months. Minimally invasive spinal procedures often allow for 24-hour discharge. Cranial surgeries typically require 3 to 10 days of in-hospital monitoring.

  • Spinal surgery stay: Stays range from 0 to 5 days. Endoscopic discectomy often requires 1 day.
  • Cranial surgery stay: Brain procedures usually require 3 to 10 days. This includes ICU monitoring.
  • Physical recovery: Most patients return to light activity within 2 to 4 weeks post-surgery.
  • Full recovery: Complete rehabilitation for complex cases can take 6 to 12 months in Poland.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from major centers like Carolina Hospital shows a shift toward early mobilization. Surgeons often discharge patients 4 days after brain tumor resections if imaging is clear. This fast-track model relies on high surgical precision. It reduces hospital-acquired risks while focusing on home-based recovery. Patients should arrange private physical therapy in advance to maintain this momentum after discharge.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that Polish hospitals prioritize quick discharge once neurological signs stabilize. While physical healing is fast, many find that cognitive brain fog can persist for 2 to 3 months.

Do Polish centers routinely perform endoscopic & MISS techniques, and what technology is available?

Polish neurosurgery centers routinely perform endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) using modern technologies. Facilities like Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic specialize in these techniques. Surgeons utilize full-endoscopic systems, RIWOspine technology, and SED-YESS lumbar endoscopes to treat disc herniations and spinal stenosis through small incisions.

  • Available technology: Centers use RIWOspine systems, O-arm navigation, and high-powered surgical microscopes for 3D visibility.
  • Core procedures: Experts routinely perform endoscopic discectomy, interlaminar laminectomy, and percutaneous screw fixation.
  • Advanced implants: Surgeons utilize Medtronic DIAM flexible implants and DISCOgel nucleoplasty for motion-preserving spine stabilization.
  • Expert credentials: Specialists like Dr. Maciej Bujko serve as international instructors for full-endoscopic spine surgery.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear distinction in technology access between private hubs and general hospitals. While Carolina Hospital and KCM Clinic perform 1,000+ to 3,000+ minimally invasive procedures, patients should prioritize surgeons with international certifications. Dr. Jurij Kseniuk and Dr. Maciej Bujko have won international awards or act as instructors, ensuring safety levels that match Western European standards.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that while recovery is much faster, finding a surgeon specifically trained in endoscopy requires careful research. Many emphasize that major centers in Warsaw and Jelenia Góra offer the most advanced equipment and provide clearer communication during consultations.

Where in Poland is neurosurgical care easiest to reach for short medical trips?

Warsaw and Jelenia Gora are the most accessible Polish cities for rapid neurosurgical care. Warsaw offers the best flight connectivity via Chopin Airport (WAW). Jelenia Gora via Wroclaw Airport (WRO) specializes in international spine surgery. Both hubs provide private consultations within 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Warsaw accessibility: Chopin Airport (WAW) provides direct global flights near clinics like Carolina Hospital.
  • Jelenia Gora hub: KCM Clinic serves 700+ international patients annually for minimally invasive spine procedures.
  • Private speed: Private neurosurgery centers bypass public wait times, offering appointments in 7–14 days.
  • Specialized expertise: Warsaw facilities like Luxmed hold ISO certifications and dedicated international patient departments.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data shows a clear logistical split between these cities. Warsaw is the volume leader for brain and complex nerve cases. However, Jelenia Gora has evolved into a specialized 'spine boutique.' KCM Clinic handles a high density of international cases, meaning their staff often has more experience with cross-border logistics than even the largest general hospitals in Warsaw.

Patient Consensus: Patients note that going private is essential for short trips to avoid months of waiting. While doctors are highly professional, travelers emphasize confirming all payment terms and package inclusions before flying to avoid last-minute surprises.
