"You are best !!!"
Good day to all! Finally we got our hands on writing about the treatment of our child at the Sant Joan de Deu Barselona hospital. I would like to say once again a huge thank you to Bookimed for the help in choosing a clinic. This is not just a hospital, THIS IS A SUPER HOSPITAL !!! To be honest, they did not even expect that medicine could be of such a high level. About the staff separately: from nurses to professors of the clinic, damn well, all simple, normal, kind people. I have never seen such attention to a child, literally everything is scheduled by the minute, everyone is smiling, joking. In general, the little one did not understand that he had undergone a complex operation on the spinal cord. After the operation and coming out of complex anesthesia, the child never even cried and did not experience any pain (except for changing the dressing, removing the adhesive plaster). The hospital itself is huge, EVERYTHING FOR CHILDREN, everything is in pictures, slides, balls, a dinosaur farm. Everything has been done so that the children would not be afraid of doctors, etc. And a special BIG THANKS to our neurosurgeon Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal with a capital letter. This is a man with golden hands and a kind heart (just works wonders)! The child began to walk on his own 5 days after the operation. Thanks to Mikki, the resuscitator, a young guy who looked after the little one after the operation, like his son. And also the hospital's translator, Mikhail, who, together with us, empathized with everything that happened, thanks to nurse Svetlana who helped in all matters related to caring for the little one, including as an interpreter, and just a good kind woman. Thanks to our curator of the hospital for organizing the stay in the clinic, cheerful, always cheerful with a smile on her face Valeria, deciding all issues of hospitalization and treatment. MANY THANKS TO ALL HONEY STAFF SANT JOAN DE DEU. You are best !!! CONTINUE SAVING THE CHILDREN AND MORE, and we, in turn, promise not to get sick anymore !! Respectfully, V.V. Solomatin

"I thank everyone for saving my kid! And recommend the hospital!"
Neurosurgeon Dr. B.Oliver is a true expert. He has removed a brain tumor in my daughter who is only 4 years old. The tumor was huge and difficult to reach. The doctor is just amazing! Everything is at the highest level. Spanish people are sympathetic and kind, and I've just fallen in love with the nation. I thank everyone for saving my kid! And recommend the hospital!

FAQ about Pediatric Neurosurgery in Spain

These FAQs come from real patients seeking medical assistance through Bookimed. Answers are given by experienced medical coordinators and trusted clinic representatives.

What is the expected recovery timeline, and what kind of long-term follow-up is required?

Pediatric neurosurgery recovery in Spain typically requires 2 to 6 weeks for initial stabilization. Full functional restoration often takes 6 to 12 months. Patients usually stay in the hospital for 10 to 14 days after complex procedures like brain tumor resections or shunt placements.

  • Early recovery: Children often begin walking within 5 days after spinal cord surgeries.
  • Hospital stay: Initial recovery involves 3 to 7 days in the intensive care unit.
  • Follow-up schedule: Medical check-ups and MRIs occur every 3 to 6 months initially.
  • Long-term monitoring: Annual evaluations continue lifelong to track developmental milestones or potential shunt revisions.
  • Rehabilitation: Intensive physical therapy may continue for several months to restore motor skills.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish pediatric centers like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital use a multidisciplinary approach that speeds up social reintegration. Data shows that integrating neuro-oncology and rehabilitation from day one reduces the time to reach physical milestones. Families often see their children walking significantly sooner than the global average.

Patient Consensus: Parents note that children often recover faster than expected in the child-friendly environments of Barcelona hospitals. They emphasize the importance of tracking subtle changes like gait or headaches during the first year after discharge.

What qualifications and experience should a pediatric neurosurgeon in Spain possess to ensure the highest safety and outcome for my child?

Qualified pediatric neurosurgeons in Spain must hold a Medical Degree and fulfill a 5-year Neurosurgery residency (MIR). Performance indicators include subspecialization through 1–2 year pediatric fellowships. Elite specialists often maintain memberships in the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) or the European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN).

  • Core certification: Must possess the official Médico Especialista en Neurocirugía title from the Spanish Ministry.
  • Clinical training: Top experts like Dr. Jose Hinojosa Mena-Bernal complete fellowships at international centers.
  • Surgical volume: High-safety outcomes correlate with surgeons performing 20+ specific pediatric cases per year.
  • Team integration: Ensure the facility provides 24/7 Pediatric Intensive Care Units and pediatric anesthesiology.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish pediatric neurosurgery is highly centralized in Barcelona and Madrid. Centers like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital manage 450,000 patient visits annually. This massive volume allows surgeons to maintain rare technical proficiency. For complex cases like epilepsy or brain tumors, choose tertiary centers with on-site molecular medicine laboratories for precise diagnostics.

Patient Consensus: Parents prioritize hospitals that don't feel like clinical environments. They value surgeons who explain complex procedures in simple terms and facilities that use play-based therapy to reduce a child's fear before surgery.

Which specific pediatric neurosurgical conditions are commonly and successfully treated in Spain for international families?

Spain successfully treats brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and spina bifida in pediatric patients. International families frequently visit Spanish centers for drug-resistant epilepsy and craniofacial malformations. Facilities like SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital use intraoperative MRI and robotic systems. These technologies improve surgical precision and pediatric safety.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Spanish centers with over 20,000 annual operations, like Centro Médico Teknon, often consolidate specialized pediatric neuro-technologies. While many facilities offer neurosurgery, those with JCI accreditation and dedicated pediatric wings typically provide faster access to robotic platforms. This combination often leads to shorter hospital stays for families traveling from abroad.

Patient Consensus: Parents describe the hospitals as welcoming environments where children feel safe and distracted by play areas. Many note that kids often begin walking within days of complex spinal or brain surgeries.

For how long will my child and I need to stay in Spain before and after the procedure, and what visa or travel arrangements are recommended?

Families typically stay in Spain for 3 to 6 weeks for pediatric neurosurgery. Patients should arrive 3 days before surgery for diagnostics and consultations. Post-operative hospital stays last 7 to 14 days. Recovery in the city for 2 to 4 weeks is recommended before flying home.

  • Pre-operative stay: Arrive 3 days early for brain MRI and anesthesia checks.
  • Hospital duration: Pediatric neurosurgery patients typically remain hospitalized for 7 to 14 days.
  • Recovery period: Stay in Spain for 2 to 4 weeks after discharge for follow-ups.
  • Visa types: Stays under 90 days usually require a standard Schengen or medical visa.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital shows they treat 450,000 patients annually. This massive volume ensures specialized pediatric ICU care is always available if recovery takes longer. Choosing a dedicated children's hospital over a general facility often means better emotional support for the child.

Patient Consensus: Parents find the inclusive, child-friendly environment in Spanish hospitals helps reduce their child's fear. Many emphasize staying near the hospital for several weeks after discharge just in case follow-up adjustments are needed.

What are the typical surgical approaches (minimally invasive vs open) used for pediatric brain and spinal interventions in Spain?

Spanish pediatric neurosurgeons utilize neuroendoscopy and keyhole craniotomy for approximately 60% of brain interventions to treat hydrocephalus and deep-seated tumors. Open surgery remains the gold standard for complex spinal reconstructions and large-scale tumor resections requiring extensive visualization. Advanced neuronavigation and robotic systems guide these procedures in Madrid and Barcelona.

  • Neuroendoscopy: Treats hydrocephalus and arachnoid cysts through small incisions to avoid permanent shunts.
  • Keyhole craniotomy: Removes brain tumors using minimally invasive openings guided by real-time MRI data.
  • Robotic assistance: Doctors like Dr. Bartolome Oliver use the Mazor Robotics system for precise spinal fixation.
  • Open surgery: Essential for complex cases like spina bifida, tethered cord, and multi-level fusions.

Bookimed Expert Insight: Data from top-tier centers like Centro Médico Teknon and SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital shows a trend toward hybrid surgeries. Surgeons often combine microsurgical open techniques with endoscopic assistance in a single session. This approach maximizes tumor removal while minimizing brain tissue disruption, which is critical for children under 5 years old.

Patient Consensus: Children often recover remarkably fast, with some walking just 5 days after complex spinal cord surgery. Parents note that Spanish hospitals create a child-friendly environment with play areas and kind staff to reduce surgical anxiety.

What medical risks or complications should I discuss with the Spanish team before consenting to pediatric neurosurgery?

Patients should discuss neurological deficits, infection risks like meningitis, and potential cerebrospinal fluid leaks. Address specific concerns regarding postoperative seizures and anesthesia reactions. In Spain, pediatric neurosurgery at centers like SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and Centro Médico Teknon follows strict informed consent protocols protecting the minor's interests.
